Either difficult because they're hard or they're just complicated to figure out

I beat Grand Theft Auto III as a kid, no map, no walkthroughs, nothing.

It took a few years, but i finally beat Donkey Kong Country 2 to 100%, i used Cranky's hints to get all the dk coins and bonuses

Majora's Mask, i never beat fully but i got decently far before getting stuck
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I completed Super Monkey Ball Adventure on the PS2 in middle school. It took me a couple years to beat the game. It was hard, but it was so much fun. Still one of my favorite games to this day.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Getting gold in all missions was very difficult, but I managed it.

As a kid I've played various games but I don't know if they were actually hard or if I just remember them as hard games:

Apocalyptica
Codename Outbreak - If I am not mistaken that game is the originator [precursor?] of the Stalker series as that's the same game studio.
Delta Force
Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3D

Oh and as you mentioned these "no map, no walkthroughs" etc. Back than I didn't even know you could find maps, walkthroughs, guides at internet, the only help were sometimes the manual instructions given into physical copies, I don't remember the listed games having any, but I do remember that Civ IV or maybe V had the whole physical paper map of technology tree.

I don't remember any other games, there should be more but just my memory ain't keeping them.

I managed to beat a lot of PS1 games like MGS, Resident Evil 2 and FFVII without speaking any English so most of the difficulty came from the language barrier. I shouldn't have been playing these games at that age but my dad didn't care. He also introduced me to RTS games but I was kinda cheating at those because I was following what he was doing so it was like looking up stuff on gamefaqs.

I managed to get gold at all the Gran Turismo 3 races and license tests, and the latter part was seriously freaking difficult.

Hmmm I guess for it's time I would say Lion King on the Sega Genesis. That game even now when I'm an adult I have trouble with. Not sure how I beat it so easily back then, and I believe it was a rental from Blockbuster.

If you're curious on how to beat that stage or about the future levels, a youtuber i used to watch back in the day made a very good guide

That's actually really impressive. I couldn't even make it past the second temple (this was in my late teens!). I was looking at YT walkthroughs so much that I didn't even bother playing it anymore haha.

I feel like beating Mike Tyson's Punch Out as a kid is still probably my greatest gaming achievement. I also beat Megaman 2 and 3 and Double Dragon 2, but they weren't as hard as Punch Out. Also just need to mention making it to the final boss in Bayou Billy even though I didn't beat it, because man that game was annoying. Does just landing the on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun count too? I feel like that should.

I CHANGE MY MIND ON EVERYTHING

Machinarium is the HARDEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED
For a young child who liked anime, Machinarium was for the complete opposite, it's for like, responsible adults with clear cognitive skills

I got decently far, but Limbo was much easier to wrap my head around (I had it on disc and it's a cherished game for me)
Still, Thank you Mom for showing me Machinarium and letting my play it on your PC, Much love xoxo

I played and beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts, which many people consider to be a difficult game. I hope that answers your question.

A friend of mine thinks A Link to the Past was difficult when he was a kid and couldn't beat it. I personally think Ocarina of Time is harder. But to answer the question, A Link to the Past? I beat it when I was 9 or 10.
