Winter 2025 First Impressions Thread Happy New Year Everyone!!! I hope your New Year's Eve was more spectacular than mine as I worked last night until the wee hours of the New Year's Day(I hope the Holiday pay was worth it). Fall 2024 was the season of too many anime and while there were interesting hidden gem series like Trillion Game and Orb. There were a few let downs like Danmachi Season 5(RIP JC Staff), Blue Miburo(boring), and Dandadan(mid). I ended up dropping more shows than usual last season. With that in mind, here's what anime I'm going to be watching this season to kick off the new year. Zenshu Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsurasugiru Dr. Stone: Science Future The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Sakamoto Days The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World Unfortunately we are suffering from the after effects from Fall 2024 as some shows from last season have carried over to Winter 2025. Think of it as a second helping of Thanksgiving dinner leftovers. Speaking of leftovers, I'm going to watch the rest of Trillion Game and the Rurouni Kenshin Kyoto arc remake. I may be able to pick up Dragon Ball Daima after its theatrical release since the English Dub for that show are coming out next Friday. While on the subject of English dubs I'm also going to continue with Solo Leveling Season 2 and the Netflix release of Sakamoto Days. What anime are you watching this season to kick off 2025? Feel free to share you first impressions in this thread. |

Link Click: Bridon Arc The prequel setup was a bit off-putting. I thought Cheng Xiaoshi met Lu Guang in high school, not university. But starting with a filler ep was a good way to ease viewers into the story, esp after all the drama in S2. Also, Qiao Ling slays ^^ Zenshu MAPPA propaganda: getting a solid job immediately after high school and progressing to director in the span of a few years after what looks like a typical magical girl anime makes it big. Also, if you're in a slump over an anime film doomed to fail, you can just get accidentally poisoned by your coworker and isekai into a better anime. Really dumb but a fun premise anyway. :P Ishura S2 Back to the exposition anime, where we're introduced to character after character. This is def a story where the world and lore matter far more than the characters themselves. Like, how is anyone supposed to care about the little girl who's supposedly friends with the giant when we've never seen them interact before? :/ Dr. Stone: Science Future Nice way to sneak the recap in, I actually liked it since I forgot half those characters lol. Starting off strong with a "gentlemen's discussion" between Senku and Ryusui culminating in a poker battle with Gen and Kohaku assisting on either side! This'll be a fun season, also looking forward to how they'll get greeted when they arrive in *America*. :D Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf Second time in two seasons where a pretty light-haired chick from another world thinks a guy is rich cuz he lives in an apartment that to her is like a tower. XD And the food is gorgeous. The Apothecary Diaries S2 Back to beautiful art and lovable characters! I forgot that Jinshi asked Maomao how to improve female literacy, but good on both of them for following through. The apothecary's choice of words to teach Xiao Lan was so relatable lmao. And we finally get Maomao with a xiao mao mao. ^^ Sakamoto Days Another type of The Way of the Househusband, but with full-length episodes and a convenience store setting. :P |

The following are the main anime that I want to watch this upcoming season, in order of anticipation:
There are also four interesting romances coming this season. Romance has been hit or miss recently, so we'll see how these do:
There may be a few others I'll check out, but the above are the ones I'm more interested in at this point. |

There are some shows I'm excited about. These were the ones that picked my interest when I did a quick run through of the Winter Seasonal Anime shows a while back:
I'd say Sakamoto Days and Honey Lemon Soda are what I'm expecting to be my main new shows, while 3-10 are ones I hope would be good shows. The rest are curiosity picks that will get the 3-episode treatment For Sequels, It's just The Apothecary Diaries S2 for me. But I doubt I won't be curious enough to peek on Solo Leveling S2, as much as I disliked the first season. Of course, streaming availability would likely reduce this by a lot... which is good, I guess? xP |

Day 1 / Dec 28: S-Rank Monster no "Behemoth" dakedo, Neko to Machigawarete Elf Musume no Pet toshite Kurashitemasu Yeah, it's just your stereotypical Isekai reincarnation show that has been repeated countless times to Kingdom Come, but to put it in the Inukai-san way has to be the most insulting of them all. It's honestly quite average and nothing stands out yet, other than the clear uncensoring. Day 2 / Dec 31-Jan 1: Hazure Skill "Kinomi Master" ~Skill no Mi (Tabetara Shinu) wo Mugen ni Taberareru You ni Natta Ken ni Tsuite~ Imagine if you take Shinka no Mi a.k.a The Fruit of Evolution, and make it into your usual fantast shtick where the underdog deserves to win, it's this show right here. Nothing else to say than that it sure made an impression of the average kind. |

Day 3 / Jan 1-2: Izure Saikyou no Renkinjutsushi? It's an Isekai for all things, but it has too many tropes of the same things that doesn't stand out a bit. Try harder to differentiate from the rest of the pack? Salaryman ga Isekai ni Ittara Shitennou ni Natta Hanashi For an Isekai, this is VERY interesting enough. A salaryman learning to negotiate in a fantasy world? This is very fresh, and I pray for a good time for this one as one of the best Isekai of the season. Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte It's Doctor X or House M.D. (or whatever you want to call it), with a loli doctor detective. So far, this sets up for the plot moving forward to decency with numerous cases. Grisaia: Phantom Trigger The 3rd installation of the Phantom Trigger series, the movies/OVAs have been decent, so to get an anime that continues the adaptation of the VN, this is probably for the best to go for gold to finish the adaptation decently. |

Day 5 / Jan 3-4: Tasokare Hotel I wasn't expecting much from the show to begin with, but I come out feeling like I want to see more. It has the supernatural mystery hook to begin with, so I'm down for more. Class no Daikirai na Joshi to Kekkon suru Koto ni Natta. Well, this turned out to be quite the rom-com that I am actually famiilar with reading the manga at first hand. Hope it can continue its share of fun down the line, even if it looks typical. Sorairo Utility The TV special turned anime after 3 years, and it's a decent one as of now. Nothing different, but it can set up for things to come. |

S-Rank Monster no "Behemoth" Dakedo, Neko to Machigawarete Elf Musume no Pet to Shite Kurashitemasu - 4/10 And with the start of the new year, here comes the isekai. Number one isn't from the real world to fantasy, but a fantasy knight to a cat. And it's a really horny show. The elf girl that owns the MC has massive boobs and does not shy away from showing her body. The first scene felt like a ripoff of the first scene from that slime isekai, but the rest of the show reminds me more the questionable dog show from last year. It's a strange aesthetic, like the guild hall is run by a big buff gay stereotype, but story-wise and world-wise it's a pretty generic world with generic character motivations. I'll never be one to say horny shows are all trash, or not worth watching in some form, but man she literally just carries around MC-cat in her boobs, it's just a bit too goofy for me. Hazure Skill "Kinomi Master": Skill no Mi (Tabetara Shinu) wo Mugen ni Taberareru You ni Natta Ken Nitsuite - 5/10 Here we have the first fairly standard fantasy show of the year, this one being of the "MC gets power that seems weak, but is actually OP" flavor. Childhood friend main girl, cute girl that lives with MC, nothing special visuals and designs. The concept has legs, with it turning out the MC can get more than one skill, but it almost immediately feels super generic with what the second skill is and then he just becomes an adventuer like so many other shows. Perhaps more interesting stuff is done in the future, but any potential does not seem strong after the end of this first episode. Just not much of note in this one. Izure Saikyou no Renkinjutsushi? - 4.5/10 Now we have the second isekai of the year, MC accidentally winds up going to a fantasy world, gets a bunch of powers and a pretty by the numbers type of experience. There's a little bit of a twist at the end of the episode with the goddess which may turn interesting, and the actual intended people that got summoned seem to have some significance in the story as well, although it looks like a version of something like Arifureta, which wasn't really my cup of tea in the first place. Visuals feel a little cleaner than average, some potentially interesting character designs, but the core is pretty generic to me. Salaryman ga Isekai ni Ittara Shitennou ni Natta Hanashi - 6/10 Rounding off the beginning isekai of the year and season, number three is the comedic one. Overworked salaryman gets summoned to be a manager for the Demon King's army. This one was more fun than the other isekai/fantasy so far, I quite like the concept as a basis for humor. It's kind of a weird roundabout from the usual job escapism to like, still working but the job and people are better, which is kind of funny to think about but the MC is enjoyable to watch. The potential is definitely going to lie in his interactions with other characters I feel, the lizard girl is cute and all but I hope it has a varied cast. The budget definitely went most into the lizard girl, and other demon general girls, because the MC is the most generic looking guy and the Demon King looks like a cheap action figure, but it works out for the most part. Animation was a little spotty sometimes. Might be a fun little mindless show. Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte - 7/10 Finally, House MD the anime is here; complete with referencing Sherlock Holmes too. I quite like the dynamic between the MC, Takao, and her guy, Kotori, and I'm glad the starting point of this story is just kind of in the middle of a random day. There's already history with the doctor's antics and I think it will create some fun instances in the future. I'm very curious about the mystery in this episode, and will be checking back with this show, even if I can imagine Takao being possible being a cringe in the future, depends how they handle her character and cockiness. Don't know if there will be romance, but I imagine there will be something between the two. Fun episode that has me interested in more. |

Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsurasugiru This is more or less a promotional anime for Okinawa than a romcom, which is not a bad thing since there are a few anime that takes place in Okinawa. I think Harukana Receives takes place in Okinawa if I'm not mistaken It is true that Okinawans have a separate culture since the small island of Okinawa is not connected to the mainland prefectures of Japan to a point where you have to take a ferry or a plane to get there. Right off the bat we have quite the love triangle between Teruaki, Hina, and Kana. Although Teruaki can barley understand Kana, Hina on the other hand speaks like a 70 year old Okinawan grandma with her super thick accent. The beaches of Okinawa always reminds me of Jamaica and I didn't know bullfighting is popular over there. Medalist I'm completely hooked after watching the first episode and I almost cried towards the end. I know a little about figure skating and its a difficult sport to get into as most of them start really young around the age of five similar to gymnastics. Inori has a lot of potential for a person who taught herself how to ice skate, so it makes sense why Tsukasa wants to train her as he missed his opportunity a while back. The English dub is really good too. |

Day 6 / Jan 4-5: Ore dake Level Up na Ken Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- Solo Leveling is back, and it's more hype than ever. Expecting more to come from the hype Webtoon adaptation, which will serve more meat than ever. Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsura Sugiru If Dosanko Gal taught me anything, it's how the city in question brings the topic straight to the question, and it becoming an anime is quite the literate experience. Not expecting much, but hoping it'll surprise me. Medalist The award-winning manga finally makes it to the anime scene, and it's just as great. Please don't eff this up, ENGI. NEET Kunoichi to Nazeka Dousei Hajimemashita A ninja NEET trying to live life being on two extreme ends? That's a hard ask...and it's weird too. |

Day 7 / Jan 5-6: Kisaki Kyouiku kara Nigetai Watashi It's an interesting premise for someone forced into the role of being nobility, only to get the relief that she can be ousted for good. But will that be the reality, which is a testament to how good the show will move forward. Keeping expectations in check. Zenshu. MAPPA's original animator-Isekai work for a plot twist really gets me gutted, but it's still pretty compelling as a series in and of itself. Don't know why, but MAPPA shows in all ways always get me hooked for good. |

Hi all. I'm watching 25 shows this season, 10 of which are yet to air. Here's a few brief impressions of the ones that I've watched: Medalist (Eng Dub) First episode has a solid setup and the emotional beats land. Looking forward to watching more! Zenshuu. Get isekai'd, nerd. Very interested to see what rugpulls this show has in store. MAPPA's usual flashy animation appears near the end, well-timed. Momentary Lily Asset Vomit: The Animation. There is lens flare in every shot of this show. Who needs industry standard compositing when you can just paste a 2D model onto a 3D background? You want a static background shot with a fisheye lens? 'Cause GoHands has a ton of those lying around. I had to pause the first episode and ask myself if seasonal anime watching was really worth it. Any show that can inspire that level of introspection has done... something. It's not good, but it is something. Solo Leveling Season 2 Unapologetic power fantasy with solid animation and... I'm sure there's a plot in there somewhere. Come for the fights, that's worth the price of admission. Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsurasugiru Pleasantly surprised how well the comedy in this show works for me. I'm sure some of it is lost in translation, but the visual gags are great. Also the OP is a ton of fun. Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte Very solid production value - show looks good and sounds good. I'm not entirely sold on the first mystery, though. It's intriguing but a bit too expository - hopefully there are some mysteries in the future where the audience can be let in on a little bit more. Sorairo Utility It's girls! It's golf! Not the prettiest show, but I don't really think it needs to be. Just cute golf girls doing cute golf girl things. Have fun everyone! ~cournz |

Day 8 / Jan 6-7: Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku It's a gacha game adaptation, so don't expect much if you don't know the source material, just leave it to the niche. Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon (Season 2) A new beginning is always a good thing, but the happiness doesn't last forever. Hope that Season 2 will deliver just as well as the high reception for Season 1. Kono Kaisha ni Suki na Hito ga Imasu The WotaKoi office romance premise (that's similar to few others we've seen in the past few years) being the most prevalent for these types of works, it's a decent start, but could use more for enticing. Kuroiwa Medaka ni Watashi no Kawaii ga Tsuujinai I knew the manga going into this, and still will come out saying that it's at least decent at best. More entertainment to come. Botsuraku Yotei no Kizoku dakedo, Hima Datta kara Mahou wo Kiwametemita Knowing the author responsible for this week (and Level 1 before it), I was expecting worse, but it wasn't bad and bland, just not yet. Will need to see how much of this is just fluff on the surface. |

Day 9 / Jan 7-8: Unnamed Memory (Season 2) Act 2 of the series is off to a decent start, and with the rather mediocre adaptation that Season 1 has left me with, I wish I can hope for better with the sequel, just please. Hana wa Saku, Shura no Gotoku Coming off from the author of Hibike! Euphonium, I knew that this show would be something special, coupled with Studio Bind's impeccable production. Hope this impresses in the long run. |

Momentary Lily - 4.5/10 (bit of a ramble for this one) Perhaps I'm being generous, but I do feel like GoHands is getting closer and closer to doing some really interesting stuff. The pure energy in the production is insanely high, they have angles and shots you just don't see in animation much (sometimes for the best and sometimes for the worse), and they don't seem to compromise on their style and presentation they've been with for a bit now. Unfortunately, I can't get over the visual dissonance of the, okay design-wise, 2D characters on the shiny 3D backgrounds, it just looks off in a really bad way to me. And content wise, these girls are extremely generic, almost to the point of seeming satirical. Like this show feels like something a otaku character is obsessed with in like a comedy show, or like Genshiken or that recent 2.5D romance thing. They literally shout their feelings and characters, and sometimes just talk over each other, world is also pretty generic post humanity wiping disaster type stuff. If you like GoHands' style, you'll enjoy this, but it's too much for me, maybe I'm getting too old for this much energy. Class no Daikirai na Joshi to Kekkon Suru Koto ni Natta. - 7/10 After reading the title I figured it would basically be KareKano again but this one certainly leans more into the comedy, and does it pretty well. Got to love the chad grandpa, and the reactions of the main 2 are pretty great. I enjoyed this episode a lot more than I thought I would, some classic tsundere stuff going on, solid visuals and a cute chibi stuff shown off a few times. Don't think it's going to be breaking into anything crazy, but looks like a very fun and cute romcom. Sorairo Utility - 6/10 It's cute girls playing golf, I watched the special a few years back and don't remember much but it seems to have the same vibe. Chill and cute, but the last golf I watched was Birdie Wing, which is a hard one to follow up on. That show was insane and wacky, this feels a bit bog-standard in comparison but ultimately it's got pretty decent visuals and simple but nice style to it. MC is pretty generic for this type of show, hopefully a good cast can bring it up but with just the two so far it's by the numbers. Kisaki Kyouiku kara Nigetai Watashi - 5/10 This is the anime version of that episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog where an old maid tries teaching Courage how to be "perfect", or at least the first half of the episode is. Second half runs a pretty standard shoujo style "girl gets betrothed to prince who then proposes to someone else" setup, which feels like it's been as played out as isekai has been the past decade or so. This one isn't like offensively bad or poorly animated or anything, visuals definitely seem a little below average but nothing really stands out positively either. The only scene that stuck was out between the MC and her brother after the split, that felt like a vaguely realistic sibling dynamic for a bit there. Medalist - 9/10 I had heard of this manga around for a bit, was looking forward to this episode, and it does deliver pretty strongly for me. The visuals are pretty good for a studio I don't remember standing out from previous recent works, some good blending of 3D in the beginning with some background 3D standing out a bit, but the characters look great and the animation is fluid where it counts. The main characters have some similar backgrounds that look like it will bring some great chemistry, and I love Tuskasa, he is a riot. I like how the story is looking at self-confidence through both a child and an adult, it's a touching setup to a main duo. I will be watching this, hopefully they can stay consistent with the quality of this episode. Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsura Sugiru - 6/10 We had Hokkaido gals last year, now we got Okinawa, but this one is much more focused on that culture and dialect then the Hokkaido one was, at least from their first episodes. Also this one is less focused on fan service, it's just a romcom with a bit of a love triangle going on. It is cute, visuals are fine, and there are some fun references, gotta respect the Zombieland Saga gag. MC and the girls are pretty generic character wise, if you're really hurting for a romcom this a fine choice, I don't think it'll be surprising anybody. |

Sakamoto Days Solid first episode for Sakamoto Days. I don't know why people are complaining about the animation because it looks fine to me for a comedy series. The action scenes were decent enough to show how OP Sakamoto is as a hitman/cleaner moving very quickly for a guy past his prime. The English dub was very good too, so I have a feeling that I will like this more than Dandadan. The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World Finally, an isekai for Super Sentai fans. I'm surprised that Red's powers would work instantly in the new world so much that even Yihdra is more confused about it. I just hope the Super Sentai references doesn't overstay its welcome as it tries to balance itself with the overused isekai tropes. Red's birthday is this Wednesday. |

First Impressions #2 💯 = impressive ✅ = great 🆗 = is ok ❕ = less ❌ = worst Kuroiwa Medaka ni Watashi no Kawaii ga Tsuujinai : Introduction 🆗 | Character Design ✅ | Animation 🆗 | Storyline 🆗 | OP/ED Music 🆗 | Mood of watching : 68% Comments : One more story of teasing high school girl. I've tried a few of these, but none have been more enjoyable to watch than 'Nagatoro'. A bright depiction for an anime that has many cheerful characters. But for episode 1, it seems that I feel that some things will be dragging the plot. Sentai Red Isekai de Boukensha ni Naru: Introduction 🆗 | Character Design ✅ | Animation 🆗 | Storyline ✅ | OP/ED Music 🆗 | Mood of watching : 73% Comments : How wonderful our childhood was, when we didn't understand the “cringe” of watching the super sentai series or what we call power rangers. The combination with the isekai genre makes us clap our heads in disbelief. And this story shows “If cringe sells, make it crazier with other crap”. Sakamoto Days: Introduction ✅ | Character Design ✅ | Animation 🆗 | Storyline 🆗 | OP/ED Music ❕ | Mood of watching : 70% Comments : I'm saved from those who criticize this anime. Because I'm not a reader who actively follows action shounen series. Technically everything is fine. However, for a story that already has a large fanbase, I think the visuals and plot of this anime are still lacking when I compare it to “Wind Breaker” which aired last year. Around 40 Otoko no Isekai Tsuuhan: Introduction 💯 | Character Design ❕ | Animation 🆗 | Storyline ❕ | OP/ED Music 🆗 | Mood of watching : 66% Comments : Just another Isekai. Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon 2nd Season: Introduction 🆗 | Character Design ✅ | Animation ✅ | Storyline ✅ | OP/ED Music ❕ | Mood of watching : 80% Comments : no comments for this soap opera. Kusuriya no Hitorigoto 2nd Season: Introduction ✅ | Character Design 💯 | Animation 💯 | Storyline ✅ | OP/ED Music ✅ | Mood of watching : 90% Comments : There's nothing to argue about. Ore dake Level Up na Ken Season 2: Arise from the Shadow: Introduction 🆗 | Character Design ✅ | Animation 💯 | Storyline ❕ | OP/ED Music ✅ | Mood of watching : 62% Comments : There are many stories that have value and excitement. But of all of them, this work was the initial boost to the theme of necromancer systems and characters. This second season has no real surprises, other than our main character progressing again, and getting attention again. I call this a “MC-centric” anime. |
