Any animes or mangas where THE protagonist is a first-year middle school or high school student? It's means to break the monotony and repetition that is second-year protagonists in anime and manga. Like a mold breaker.

Hence the title, the character has to be between 12-13 (middle school)/15-16 (high school) who actually become a second-year through progression. Anything other than that will NEVER count and be disregarded as such.

@test-dummy-99 Yeah, the protags all are starting middle/high school at the beginning. I haven't watched the first two to know if it progressed all the way to the next year. The third's year progression is still in the manga.

Maria-sama ga Miteru -- Female protag starts as 1st year HS student and during S2 moves up a year.
Hibike! Euphonium -- Female protag starts as a 1st year HS student and progresses to 2nd and finally to 3rd year.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei -- Male protag starts as a 1st year HS student and progresses to 2nd year in a later season. There is also a side story that retells the 1st season from his sister's POV (they are in the same school and schoolyear but different classes). MAL does have a link but it's not linked usefully from the parent story: Mahouka Koukou no Yuutousei.
Seitokai Yakuindomo -- The OVA sequel moves up to 2nd year.
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e -- In the not-yet-aired 4th season the class will be moving up a year.
Akuyaku Reijou Level 99: Watashi wa Ura-Boss desu ga Maou dewa Arimasen -- Fantasy world magic academy that is equivalent to HS (1st year students are age 15). Protag enters the magic academy as 1st year, progresses to year 2 and finally to year 3 in later episodes.

The wording of your 2nd paragraph seems to indicate you want to see the actual progression in school year happen. If you request it I can also give you plenty of series where the protag starts 1st year middle or high school but without the progression to year two. Ie. the series begins and ends at 1st year.

Regardless, the six titles I mentioned should keep you busy for a quite a while. For myself I really like these progressing schoolyear series because they usually include a teary graduation episode for graduating senpai followed shortly thereafter with freshmen characters showing up at the start of the next school year (with our protags becoming 2nd years of course).

Yes, and also that where the protagonist is a first-year without going to the progression to second-year. You know it starts and ends with them being first-years.

Added a couple to my 1st reply.

To your question I don't read much manga so I couldn't say whether the many 1st year protag series I've watched progress into 2nd year in some possible future installment (S2 or an OVA, etc). All the ones I know of haven't mentioned additional seasons yet.

@8oomer

Tho what about series where the protagonist is a first-year, with the work starting and ending as such without going to their second year, like you mentioned?

Single season only or else multiple seasons but protag doesn't progress to a new school year:

First year middle-school:
Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san

First year high-school:
Yagate Kimi ni Naru
Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai -- Tbh the character designs (and behavior) seem closer to middle-schoolers but it's confirmed HS setting.
Xian Wang de Richang Shenghuo -- It's possible they DO move up I just don't know yet because I'm only partway through S3 so far.
Ao no Orchestra -- This actually starts at final year of middle-school but moves into 1st year high-school after a couple of episodes or so.
Little Witch Academia TV -- A magic academy with varying character ages but the protag is stated as age 16. There is some discussion whether it follows a Western school calendar or a Japanese one.

Combined MS/HS situation:
Strawberry Panic -- Protag transfers in at beginning of year 4 of a combined middle-school/high-school so technically 1st year of HS.

Edit:
Moved Little Witch into HS category (protag is age 16).
Confirmed Akuyaku Reijou Level 99 is HS level (protag is age 15). Also, the class advances to year 2 in episode 8 and year 3 at the end of episode 11 so I moved this show's link to my first post.

Hmmmm... Looking at these animes, does the main protagonist fit the first-year middle/high school criteria? Minami-ke's main protagonist is a second-year, tho. Not first-year, which does not count at all. It has to be the main that is the first-year. Secondary or minor characters as first-years will never count. Dunno if one of them even qualify for the criteria of the main protagonist being a first-year midldle or high schooler.
