And on the other end, what are your thoughts when you click on someone's profile from a 10+ year old post and they're still active today?

Maybe they got bored of anime and found a new hobby.

If it's someone I cared about or seems like an interesting person, I think it's a shame that they're gone. I like seeing older accounts that are still active.

They probably grew up out of it, for the better.

They don't care about anime anymore. They moved to another similar site. They are quite literally dead. They became a slave in Saudi Arabia.

My thoughts are
1. They forgot password to account
2. They are dead
3. They found a new hobby
4. They found a new website to add their anime

I think it's pretty obvious. They probably typed their password on a piece of paper along with a bunch of others so that they don't forget them. Then, what they do is they usually put it in one of the card slots in their wallet because first, it's a very secure place to store such things, and second, you always keep your wallet close to you, which means your friends/family/etc. won't randomly stumble upon your password paper and see all the embarrassing stuff you do online. It's a solid strategy overall, especially for those who don't trust or are too old/paranoid to use password managers, but are still smart enough not to put the same or easy-to-remember password everywhere.

However, one day, they find themselves in this YouTube "self-improvement" rabbit hole, and before they know it, they are working out in the gym daily, wearing new clothes, smelling better, taking care of their aging dry skin, etc. etc., so their girlfriend (naturally) starts getting suspicious and assumes they are having an affair with someone. Then, what happens is she waits for them to leave their wallet unguarded, and starts frantically digging through everything inside in search of "proof" since she remembers that is where the person used to store their condoms back when the two of them first started dating like 3 years ago. In the process, their password paper falls out, mixes with the 50+ grocery receipts they've been keeping in their wallet as well for absolutely no reason, after which it is lost, never to be found again, until someone inevitably throws it in the trash by mistake.

There go their emails, their $1000+ steam purchases, their online contacts, their MAL account (probably), and whatnot. They'll probably be able to restore some of it, but most of it will be lost forever, all thanks to Mary.

What are your thoughts when you click on someone's MAL profile and they haven't logged on in years?
They must have forgotten their password, lost interest in anime, or maybe they simply passed away or have more serious issues. Especially the accounts with thousands of days accumulated and thousands of completed anime, they put in so much work, and now they’re abandoned. That makes me sad.

What are your thoughts when you click on someone's profile from a 10+ year old post and they're still active today?
It amazes me. There are so many people here who created their accounts when I was born x.x

Sorry if I write something incorrect, English is not my native language.

I don't care about it.

That it is impressive that they are dedicated to a hobby, or rather this site for so long, and makes me wonder for how long I will be using MAL.

There's a feeling I can't quite describe. It's like an eerie nostalgia. When I see old profiles that aren't online anymore, it gives me the same kind of feeling I get from images of liminal spaces. I've seen whole websites like that; they're like ghost towns. As for the people whom once owned those profiles, my first thought is that they must be dead. If not, then maybe they forgot their password, or they made a new account, or they moved to a different website. If I see an old post and find that person is still active, I feel a small amount of respect. I hope to be one such person 10 years from now.

My thoughts are that they are deceased. I like to think this way because it adds a solemn, pensive element to MAL browsing that enhances its flavour.

R.I.P to all those inactive accounts out there.

It’s a very different feeling which I can’t really express xd
And I also often wonder if the person knew it would be their last time online when they were last active.

I think "hopefully they're still alive"

If it's the opposite as you said and I see they're still active I usually just think "that's cool" or something in that vein

@fleurbleue Hmm, it's still hard to tell. We'll see where my early-onset midlife crisis takes me! ^^
