@Mainnus can someone give me a breakdown on the perspective of this frame? I've paused it multiple times and couldn't quite figure it out. At first I thought Frieren blasted a hole through the hill behind Qual but there isn't one behind him. Maybe a hole straight into the ground but the water/reflection is still. Perhaps it's just a theatrical thing by the animators to showcase her power?

Frieren is so old she's seen how a once deadly offensive magic be reduced to something that's easily defended. Kinda like smallpox. She doesn't just live long does she? She's immortal. 80 years and she hasn't aged a day.

So far I can see how this could get to a point where it earns the heaps of critical acclaim it's gotten, but I feel like there's a good chance I'm going to ultimately come away thinking "Violet Evergarden did it better."

Part of that is my own distaste for the soft magic and lazy worldbuilding most anime fantasy falls into (by that I mean the archetypical fantasy, series like Hunter x Hunter, Dorohedoro, FMAB, etc are some of the best fantasy worlds I've ever seen) and I do worry that Freiren's world is going to fail to differentiate itself from the standard affair—it certainly hasn't done so yet even if it's not the worst offender. I would love to be proven wrong in time but I don't have my hopes too high in that department.

The production itself is still top-notch at least. Again, my only critique is that—as much as I like the song—Yoasobi sounds too modern for an archetypical fantasy story. The rest of the music fits brilliantly, which only makes it stick out like a sore thumb. It's too modern and electronic (even if I do like the song).

She’s plotting. She’s obviously spoiling her own suprise by the looks of it. Better than heavy bones or strange potion. The collector is capable to saving. He can tell what she wants to eat. They are still up to nothing at all. Magic theory and history. It’s threatening to get interesting. Qual and Zoltrock better not be a chimploonie task. A spell with that much power shouldn’t exist. Boo. They already invented the perfect counter to the strongest attack ever before we even saw it used. (Now I think about it I like the concept, the original boo was because of how short and meaningless the fight was clearly going to be because of that.) It was a painfully short but good looking fight. She kills him with his own life’s work. At least there was A fight. I guess I wasn’t expecting the right show coming into this.

I don't know how that fight could've been any better tbh. From the fact that his ultra-strong magic back then was outdated after 80 years and could easily be countered, to the end when Frieren defeated him with his own magic that he himself could not block. Another amazing episode.

Honestly very nice anime. The magic of this world feels very real and alive too. Great worldbuilding to be honest. Also, the persistence of Humans to overcome anything is evident in this anime! Zoltraak's magic, which used to be very advanced 80 years ago, has become basic offensive magic. LMAO. Humans are really different creatures.

The magic is animated beautifully, and I was a big fan of the fight/training scene they had. It was cool to see how they develop characters both in the present and the past, and I am excited to hear more about their old journeys.

Great episode, nicely paced to culminate with what I thought was very poignant. For Qual he was sealed away for "only" 80 years yet his once-feared spell became "ordinary" offensive magic. Speaks a lot to our own lives.. let's not forget not 4 years ago we were all living in fear of a global pandemic that just doesn't scare us at all nowadays.

It was a very well-written episode I enjoyed the art style, and the first "real" fight scene of the show was interesting to watch! I liked the in-depth explanation of the magic and mana elements as well!

She rly hasn't much of a connection to time. I also wonder how she rly didn't realize some stuff earlier though. It seems she was so dettached in interest from humans that she just didn't "see" stuff

At first, I wasn't getting the vibes of thee anime, but honestly, after 3 episodes, I must say this anime is a whole vibe, and I love it. I'm loving to watch Frieren understanding more and more human feelings, and remembering the good old times with Himmel and company. I wonder what happened to Elsen, since he still hasn't appeared since episode one.
The fact that Frieren remembered Fren's birthday, and bought her a gift, and dedicated some time to find a place so that she could eat something sweet, THAT'S SO CUTE, I LOVED IT SO MUCH. This anime is growing so much on me, it's honestly crazy. This episode, it's important to note that Frieren now aknowledges that 80 years for humannity is a lot, and showed how something that was impossible to beat 80 years ago, is not something she can easily avoid, and use the spell herself, that's incredible. This was actually the spell we have seen her use sometimes before too! That twist was so interesting! I loved it! And now, after 3 episodes, the ending is hitting different, and honestly, I can get the vibe of the opening, the song is undoubtly good, but I do agree that it's not something that quite fits the whole vibe of the anime, but it's a whole vibe too.
Will need to watch the next episode SOON.

Edit: Also, when are getting to see the red-haired guy that appeard on the poster of the anime and also the opening? I suppose he's going to be also part of the party of Frieren, and that it must be soon, but I'm curious to know him, since the opening hints that he has quite some backstory too (since I don't think we will be meeting him as a kid).

also can't believe she got jealous of Fern's growing chest when she feels extremely mature and wise, that "childish" moment of hers was funny and cute lol

I found this scene really funny too! xD

The dwarf tell her once he likes sour grape? How funny, Frieren knows a spell that makes sweet grape become sour.
Touching story in even the details, really.

I loved how they added that little detail! Frieren now can make the dwarf's favorite grapes!

Fern has already sort of become a mother figure to Frieren lol. I wish I had someone like Fern to always take care of me :( Just joking, I love my mom :)

The fight with Qual is brilliantly animated. The writing is even more brilliant though. It's fascinating to think that the attack that once killed over half of the mages and adventurers, and caused serious problems for even the legendary party, has now been rendered completely insignificant in just 80 years. Well, 80 years is a lot more than an average human's lifespan, but in the great, almost eternal passage of time, it ultimately amounts to nothing.

In the final scene, Fern tells Frieren that the villagers seemed to have immense trust in her, to which Frieren replies that they actually trusted Himmel and not her. Subsequently, Fern says that Himmel himself believed in Frieren and that she would not neglect her duty and come to save the villagers in time, which she did.

This is easily my favorite scene of the episode, because of both the substantial dialogue and the marvelous track that accompanies it. I was experiencing heaven while watching this, no exaggeration at all. Evan Call is doing such a fabulous job. "In Times of Peace" is particularly ❤️

Still not sure what this story is driving at yet, but it's good not to know. Then it has a chance to surprise me. But the episode by itself was pretty generic fantasy stuff.
Don't know much about Fern, after two episodes. Frieren herself is still a mystery but that seems to be the point- so wait and see.
