Yes, it doesn't really matter that AniDB added the entry for the purposes of MAL (they have other things not on MAL, and don't allow some things MAL does), but the point is that they laid out exactly why they decided to add it and MAL could benefit from reviewing this and reconsidering their decision. |

| @Old_School_Akira I'm not quite sure it's a 1:1 comparison. a) Original source never mattered. b) The director was never the issue, as both work for Japanese companies. c) The two producers listed here are Taiki Sakurai (Japanese) and Justin Leach (employed by a Japanese company). So there is really nothing to debate about Leviathan. The reason for Scott Pilgirms's denial is: "Joint animated work where only animation is completed by a Japanese company with a western creative leadership team." But as the credits show: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=27712 a) The animation is entirely Japanese, not jointly worked on. b) There is plenty of information showing that the creative leadership was shared by the US and Japan (arguably more from Japan) and that the project was spearheaded by Japan. c) The executive producers Kohei Obara (Japanese) and Eunyoung Choi (employed by a Japanese company), associate producer Yoshiko Makabe, animation producer Kouhei Sakita, assistant animation producers Hiroaki Hashimoto and Seiki Iiyama. Just because there are more Westerners with the executive producer credit doesn't really mean anything if they had minimal involvement in the project to begin with. The script being credited to Westerners may have something to do with it, but I don't think this should be the be-all and end-all, since the storyboarding, direction, and other roles with creative involvement are from Japan. So yes, once again, I believe Scott Pilgrim Takes Off should be in the database. Possibly the Japanese owners will get involved at some point and force them to add it, because these I don't believe these decisions good for the future of the database as the industry evolves, or maybe we will see a natural reconsideration as more of these sort of productions are considered. |
