I have started watching Apothecary Diaries, it's a pretty good show. If there's one element that holds this show from being a masterpiece, it would be Jinshi. Hear me out, I love Jinshi, he's amazing but I think he would work much better as a male lead in a Yaoi show or Chinese anime like Mo Dao Zu Shi(The Founder of Diabolism) and Heaven's Official Blessing.

He would get incredibly popular in those types of shows with a predominantly fujoshi fanbase. There'll be tons of fanfiction and fanatics would be written about him.

From episode one, Maomao is already established as a character who's a highly hobby-driven girl and doesn't care about romance or sexuality in the slightest which implies she's already coded as aro-ace character. The ship has already sunk and there's no point in hoping that it would become canon

I don't like Jinshi, he ain't funny nor badass and is just taking away valuable screen time from Maomao.

So you guys want a 1 character show? No comic element? No romantic development? I hope someone makes the dull show you want and it makes you happy, but just stop thinking you’re so much better than the writer of a highly successful show. Judging by its ratings, a high percentage of viewers DONT want it rewritten to suit a vocal majority who have random character prejudices.

I felt pretty much the same and even though I could see reasons why some may like it, there's a certain element that at the end will still give hints of it being forced. I think both jinshi and maomao bounce well off each other, I think his fascination with her is better when it's something along the lines of intrigue and finding someone doesn't fawn over him, but adding that hint of romance kind of ruins it.

And not in that "oh men and woman can be best friends too you know" kind of way cuz that doesn't make sense, best friends can get married it's not a big deal.

But it's more in a "these twos relationship is better and more impactful without romance" kind of way which is a step I don't see many shows taking.

These are just my thoughts, if it's your romantic ship, more power to you and if it's not also the same. I just think they're better without the romance.

Tbh I read the lightnovel too and jinshi adds a lot to it for me. Aside from his influential value (especially from a certain plot point on) he adds a whole other side to this series. It’s a lot like how it would go in real life with real people. Maomao is very passionate about medicine and is very fixated on it, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have other interests. She’s human and being a strong female lead doesn’t mean she can’t fall in love, and the way their relationship slowly develops feels very natural and true to her character. It makes her feel more real and I love the direction the series takes with it.

I like him not only as comic relief but also as someone who takes momo out her comfort zone. he also feels like a real character due to him knowing he can use his beauty to his benefit, but not for all aspects of his line of work and which he struggles with.

I never even cared about the ship or whatever. I'm watching it because of Maomao.

Jinshi is a fantastically written character who happens to fall in love with Maomao.

The romance isn’t the focus of this story as of now. It will be VERY later on but you ain’t supposed to watch it for the ship alone.

Their relationship take a long ass tine to develop, so when it happened, it felt earned as fuck.

He’s literally one of the main reasons why this novel got so popular in the first place.

This take is preposterous.

Which makes your whole argument a bit narrow minded and weak^^

Jinshi doesn't have much of an important role rn but as the show develops he plays a very important role...yall should read the manga it's slowly getting really great and the development is amazing. Making it a one character show would be useless

one of the main reasons there’s no romantic tension between them is because maomao thinks he’s a eunuch therefore she doesn’t see him as a man PLUS her characterization and treatment toward men stems from growing up in a brothel and seeing how men treat women especially because of the situation with her biological parents. if you want to better understand the relationship and actually see it progress read the manga.

This reasoning is ridiculous. So what if there's no romance? Characters can stand on their own, attractive guys don't need a yaoi ship to be popular, and aroace-coded characters don't have to exist in a vacuum with no potential love interests around.

Agreed since I’ve caught up in the LN too. And also they provide character development for each other as their relationship develops. All romance and relationship building isn’t lovey dovey. So I do appreciate a story that shows this and how wants conflict with duties.

not really watching this for the romance personally, but I can see why people would be frustrated. IMO he just lacks... hmmm, agency would be the wrong word, it is thru his auspices that them problems are solved, he lacks uhh capability? self-sufficiency? IDK what it is, I just need to see him able to stand on his own two feet for once, not be the NPC questgiver of sorts.
It wouldve been fun to show him handling court intrigue, while maomao handles the practical side of things (assassinations, medicine, etc) and they become a power couple

Gaoshun is a father figure to Jinshi and the sentiment is reciprocate, shipping them is akin to shipping Maomao with her Eunuch Father.

You can be open to a relationship and not show it? You can be a hobby-driven person and not care about romance and still be receptive to it. There are plenty of reasons for her to not even SEE a possibility between them or have interest at this time, she still thinks he's a eunuch. She's not coded as anything, if anything you could say she's autistic-coded. You're just picking and choosing things about the series and extrapolating their meaning, or lack thereof, for your own benefit. In any case, coding is only possible when the creator intends for such a thing, the person writing this probably has never even heard the phrase "aro-ace" in their life.
No watch list sig cuz "You watch anime in 3 days or 3 months! Such is the proper way!"
