My gf and I have watched the first 3 episodes after this show was recommended to us by multiple people and have found the animation, music, voice acting and comedy to be really well done. We can see why a lot of people really like it!

Yet, while we understand that it has an episodic nature, both of us were really struggling to see the overarching plot of the story and why we should care about the characters. We like them all, but don't see the larger plot. Is there one? A lot of episodic shows will hit you with a big reveal or plot point that builds into so the earlier episodic episodes allow you to connect with the characters before the plot really kicks in. However, I've done some research and every plot summary I try to find simply describes the first episode or two and makes me feel this show could be soley episodic.

I'm ok with spoilers, I just want to get a sense of what's to come with the show because right now everything seems kind of vague. Thanks for the help!

No, it's not exactly like that. Each story reveals a part of the history of Maomao, Jinshi, and their surroundings. Yes, there is a sweeping plot here with intrigue heavily affecting both main characters from their early childhood.

At what point is this revealed? When do we get to start seeing that past childhood? And what does that sweeping plot revolve around?

@Brick_ there is an overarching plot. But it will only start to reveal itself around vol. 2 of the novels so in the second half of the anime.

Currently the plot can be roughly divided in 3 story arcs (based on English translation, JP version may have more):

1. Volumes 1-4 of LN (this anime this season will cover vol. 1-2 most probably),

2. Volumes 5-7.

3. Starting vol. 8 there is

We've already started to see it in short flashbacks of the main character from the first episode. It's just that they pass by the anime-only attention for now, to be revealed later.

Well, the "plot" varies based on what point we are in the story. Sometimes it will be about Mao Mao doing detective/apothecary work, sometimes it will be about one of the consorts and their background, sometimes episodes will be about Mao Mao and family members that have changed her for better or worse but mostly the series is episodic in nature and there really is no overarching plot or some kind of final goal that the MC is chasing.

That's not to say that it be episodic the whole time. We're going to dive into some interesting story arcs soon I reckon.
