Not really necessary in my opinion. For example, sometimes the side character can steal the show and that's perfectly fine.

The main character should be interesting and likable, not poorly written. It's alright if, for instance, the antagonist or a side character shines more brightly, like Bruno Bucciarati and Kira Yoshikage do in their respective stories. However, it's important that the main character isn't overshadowed completely. As long as the main character is not poorly crafted, and the overall story is great, it's acceptable for others to outshine them.

Side characters should have moments to shine. You do not want your sides to be like Yamcha...

I don't know about that, but whoever is getting the most screen time should be at least a good character in that series. Otherwise, what's the point in pouring the mostscreen time on a character if they have no development at all?

They Shouldn't because Antagonist must have their time (scene) to shine like Pein, and Madara

Not really. Gon is not the best character in HxH IMO, but he is still a good character. It depends on the writing weight. Now Itadori from JJK for example is the opposite; and to be honest I even forgot his name while I was typing here.

Sieg is the perfect example of this. He's not bad, but not overtly memorable. He goes through the cliché anime lead story arc, falls in love, battles evil, learns to live for his own wishes but he never reaches the greatest of Shirou or even Fujimaru (other MC in the same series). I mean his literal servant is far more memorable than he is.

Sometimes it takes a real man to be best girl. Gilgamesh is also chad.

The protagonist needs to be a good character, but they don't always need to be the best character. I think it's perfectly fine to have side characters who are better than the protagonist, or who you just like more than the protagonist, as long as the protagonist is good enough.

It's hard for a series to be good without at least a decently good main character, but a supporting cast can make or break it too. In all the Urasawa manga I've read so far, the main character has been incredible, but it's the side characters that really elevate the series to me.

MC of psycho-pass is kinda useless but it's still a good show

Madoka Magica is an example of a very good production, where the main POV character is the least interesting character.  So is Madoka the main character?  It all comes down to definition.   Is the "main character" the main POV character, the character with most screen time  (often these two are the same), the protagonist, the character with the largest effect on the story, .... ?  I would argue that under any definition it is not necessary for the "main character" to be interesting to have an interesting production.

A lot of the time anime is about an average, normal person being caught up in unbelievable circumstances like the above mentioned Madoka Magica. But at least Madoka grows as a person. We all know anime has a problem with blank slate protagonists devoid of any personality whatsoever.

One of the most interesting at least and some anime / manga / light novels are doing a pretty good job at it, imo and don't get where this "side characters are almost always more interesting" is coming from.
For example Banana Fish, Mo Dao Zu Shi, Princess Mononoke, Cowboy Bebop etc... all have interesting protagonists, not every anime got a blank slate.

"Best" is highly subjective, but even with that aside the answer is no. Most stories are built in a way that the center of the story is the interesting part, but some stories are deliberately written otherwise. Many great stories are written so that the most interesting character is not the main character so that we observe the focal point of the story from the outside. Sometimes a character is more interesting to observe from an outside perspective as we slowly learn about them

No, the main character in an anime does not always have to be the best. The protagonist is usually the main character whose journey is the focus of the narrative, although this does not entail that they are also the strongest, most talented, or best-rounded characters.Anime

In theory yes, but not necessarily. Often the protagonist is only "our eyes" and a guide to the story, while other characters are its real diamonds. Not to mention the show with self-insert protagonists. Some shows develop and care for other characters so much that you start to wonder why this is happening and why this character isn't the main character.

Overlord is a case of better side characters than main (in my opinion). His underlings make the show interesting and carry out most of things, while the main is more of a support, so they don't strive from main objective.
So for your question yes, it's ok for side characters to be better, makes it fresh

I wonder if you will ever learn the MC and the protagonist are not always the same character in a story.
I won't. I will use them interchangeably until I'm dead.

just like most other questions, it depends.

but I think in most cases, the main character being that one S tier character, is better than that title going to someone different.

so, I would say while it's not necessary, it's better when that's the case.

No, this isn't a requirement I have. I've actually seen a number of shows that have relatively boring lead protags, though to be fair, those times when it occurs with the male lead in a harem show, it's sorta intentionally built for the characters surrounding the lead to be more interesting than the lead.

But I don't mind having my favorite character be one of the secondary protags, or even one of the more obscure side characters. This happens pretty often too.

Now, while the lead protag doesn't need to be the best character, I'd still prefer the lead protag be a tolerable character. To reuse my example above, boring male harem leads are boring, but at least they're often inoffensive. On the other hand, I recently finished the Little Witch Academia TV series, and that had a lead character that I feel inclined to outright dislike, due to her antics and her tendency to be inconsiderate of others. I later realized that this is a show with good storytelling, but just a hard-to-withstand lead protag, and I still don't know how I feel about the show yet, considering that the plot did come together nicely but some of the earlier episodes left a weird aftertaste.
