So I asked my aunt to buy me vol. 1 of Rooster Fighter for x-mas since it hadn't been released in my country yet (spoiler: it got released a week later ๐Ÿคฃ)
Anyways, to avoid the atrocious shipping cost I said I'd pick it up when I go on vacation
Well now I'm here, and realizing, it's a bootleg copy of Rooster Fighter ๐Ÿ“
No viz logo, no barcode, just a pink flower at the top of the spine
This means bootleg manga exist! This means I still have hope of finding physical copies of Digimon manga!!

Has anyone else had experience with bootleg manga?

Most Shounen Jump manga are bootleg of another bootleg but most of them get axed in a short time.

I haven't and i hope i don't get any but i'm not surprised since bootleg variations of nearly everything exist, i try to order/buy things on official sites i know of and avoid anything too shady (yk when someone tries selling something for a price too good to be true types, and wonky unheard of sites that don't look too legit) but dang it can't be helped if you buy a bootleg it happens.

Unfortunately speaking, it used to be something really common in my country long ago considering how we have Chinese manga readers here - You can easily get one in even normal bookstores that sells newspapers. As time passed, it became uncommon but sometimes you can still see these 'manga' stores around selling them.

I thankfully have not gotten any to my knowledge.

Didn't even realize bootleg manga existed 'til last year—apparently listings for bootleg English manga from Malaysia are fairly common on eBay.

well, that's why I only buy manga from my local B&N. If I can't find it there, I just order it from Amazon. None of the sellers have ever failed me yet.

Curious, if you wanted to collect a physical copy of a manga, but it hasn't been officially released in english (or your language), and you come across a bootleg copy of it, buy it yay or nay?

@DigiCat I think I would buy it If It's a series I really like. For example, The Blue eye of Horus but it has to be at the right price as well. I'm not tryna get double fleeced.

That's a good question... I dunno if I would, really... like if it's someone taking the scanlations people have put up online and selling physicals of them, obviously that's pretty scummy. In that case I'd rather just print those myself if I really wanted to, but I don't really want to enough to go wasting several sheets of printer paper that everyone else could be using. Going out for the original Japanese copies would be preferable even, they're not as expensive as English prints most of the time even if you only look on eBay... though obviously most people just don't know enough Japanese to go doing that.

Which reminds me: what I'm about to mention next are not bootleg but actual official releases, but... I was considering trying to find Chuang Yi manga someday. Chuang Yi is a publisher that has released manga in English for audiences in Singapore.

While they have their own way of translating and typesetting that makes whatever series they print feel significantly different than if they were released in the West (Tokyo Mew Mew is a good example if you've seen even a little bit of Chuang Yi's copies), they've released some stuff America didn't get, like several Pokémon manga spin-offs (as you can see with Phantom Thief Pokémon 7 there) and the rest of Magical Pokémon Journey. I'd totally love to collect the latter if I can ever find anyone putting that up anywhere, no matter how low quality of the translation/localization might be...

@DigiCat actually if it's like a compilation of scanlation chapters that i come across i think i would as a place holder until anything official ever releases, but it'd have to be something i really like otherwise i'd probably just read it online at that point.

thinking on it might feel wrong since i'm going to presume they probably just took the scanlators work but it's not like people don't already do that constantly

It is a big no for me, especially when these 'bootlegs' actually share similar prices with the original ones. Might as well wait a lil and spend a couple of bucks more for the original.

Of course if the original's available I'll definitely go for that, I mean stuff that never got an official release, or stuff that's been discontinued

For example Zatch Bell got an official eng release, but never got completed (though maybe now that there's a sequel I can hope ๐Ÿคž)
Something like that, if you've bought all the available official releases supporting the manga, and you're only missing the last few volumes, would you get bootlegs in a situation like that?
