one of the best episode ever created and Askeladd is the greatest villain of all time I didn't want him to die at the start I couldn't have imagined being sad at Askeladd's death but now I'm really really sad and Thorfinn was so broken after Askeladd's death I just can't wait for the next season Askeladd will be remembered as the greatest villain of all time

Wow what a fantastic last episode. My goodness.

I never thought I’d grow to like Askeladd this much, damn… RIP indeed. The moment where he beheaded the king was insane!!

I hope Thorfinn can finally move on bruh.

The series really kept me wanting more. Super keen for next season now.

I don’t know why they changed the end with thorfinn getting imprisoned for whatever reason. Honestly just a a super weird change.

Because instead of thorfinn being pissed off about losing his duel to askeladd and waiting outside because he refuses to be in the lords banquet, he literally just lost all hope seemingly, got into a fight, and got arrested, then was literally gonna go back to Iceland, but changed his mind for no reason and immediately ran to askeladd?? Which I just don’t understand.

Why would he suddenly give up and leave? Then why would he randomly run to askeladd? Then when he’s holding askeladd while he’s dying, he’s screaming about how he wanted to kill him still, as if it was the same as in the manga. Just doesn’t make much sense to me.

Oh, I liked the symbolism with Thorfinn dropping his knife but I was so sure that the end of Askeladd would come from the Hand of Thorfinn. But now I get it how the whole anime built up after the final episode. Thorfinn was supposed to suffer the entire time the last episodes run and actually Askeladd showed him how he was so clueless for the last few episodes. Great writing I would say!

I started watching this anime because second season of this was going to start in a week or so. I initially thought I would not like this anime and drop it after a few episodes, because I was not into history stuff at all. However, after I started watching it, I developed a liking to this series. Now that I finished it, I am looking forward to the second season coming up a few days later.

Such an excellent anime with a great ending. I hated Askeladd so much at the beginning of the series, but now he has become one of my favorite villains; in my opinion he carried this anime. Despite I didn't like Thorfinn at all, I will give to this anime a 9.5/10 because everything else is amazing and Wit did a fantastic job.

Interesting

When Thorfinn dropped the dagger it seemed as he even mourned the death not of his target of vengeance, but of a second father who has been taken from him.

Now he is truly aimless and without lead, and will need to find a new reason to live.

Luckily for people like me S2 is just around the corner.

I can't think of a word to describe how I feel. It's so bitter, i'm so unhappy for a character like Askeladd to not only not be killed by Thorfinn, but also how he let Canute kill him and essentially die the way he planned.....My soul feels so bad for Thorfinn man, that one thing he strived for since a child to just be gone in such an unfair and aggravating way is so soul shattering, but so realistic at the same time.

I have mixed feelings about this ending, but I'm also content with it. Askeladd's goal was to leave the kingdom in the hands of someone he has personally mentored. There is no doubt that Askeladd took a gamble when he decided to side with the prince, but he also shaped him into the person he became. He knew that his old age will get the best of him so he made sure someone else could fulfill his desire. I think that's what makes the ending great, but my dissatisfaction comes from the absence of closure in Thorfinn's side of the story. This whole journey started with him and it's a shame how the show ends without any kind of conclusion to his story. And maybe that's not really a bad thing, maybe it's better to leave it open-ended, but I don't see it that way.

The animation of the second half is pretty bad. It was below average and I kind of understand why Wit dropped this project too. I'm not sure if I'll be watching the second season now that Askeladd's dead. What else is there to add? Thorfinn will never get his revenge and Askeladd got the ending he chased after.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

lmao how can someone be so wrong lol.

First of all thorfinn is not the main char of this season, this is just a prologue which is all about askellad from adult thorfinn perspective. The last ep is literally called "end of prolouge". How can there be conclusion to thorfinn story if his journey hasn't even begun? Thorfinn journey begins in s2

Although there was drop in animation, wit studio delivered all the important scenes, atleast they're not mappa butchering important scenes, besides the core staff of s2 is still from  wit staff

Ah yes, I love me some mad MAPPA haters. I am not a manga reader to guess that this is only a prologue and that there's more. As a standalone series, the second half is all over the place. It was deceiving that you initially sign up for a revenge story, but get an ending for someone else's journey. I wish there was more development to Thorfinn's character, what's so wrong about that? I also invite you to reread my post. I clearly stated that the ending is good with regard to Askeladd's story/journey.

The staff being the same does not make it any better my dude.

my man this is silly, it's like judging eren just after s1.

"I wish there was more development for thorfinn character"

My man I literally said his journey starts in s2, besides he got his "char development" at the finale ep where he realises his revenge was meaningless in long run, he realises how he wasted his life for past 10yrs, this is beautifully shown during dagger scene and when askellad asks "what will you do after my death"
You just cannot judge a char by just s1 when there's still three seasons worth of content to be adapted.

Coming to mappa, there's no denying wit is way better. While wit tries to elevate the manga, mappa literally does the opposite. Literally every imp scene from aot/vinland was given justice by wit. Besides the 1st half vinland saga has some gorgeous background in the history of anime, and they did all these with just limited budget. Besides the worse from wit is still better than many of mappa's adaptation

Askeladd could have chosen Wales over Canute. But the King might not keep his promise. Canute is more trustworthy. So, logically he made the correct decision to kill. Askeladd did so many evil things, but he did something right in the end.

Nice to see Canute still respects Thorfinn and feels sad for taking away his chance to kill Askeladd.

What an ending for the first season. Never thought that so many things will happen in one episode.

Askeladd or should I say 'Lucius Artorius Castus' actually killed the king achieving his goal to save his country which also benefitted Canute as he became the king.

Thorfinn never got a victory in a fair duel. Still wonder how the story is going to continue as Thorfinn's goal could not be completed now, maybe he will return to his homeland and sail to Vinland and his journey to Vinland will be covered in season 2.

Let's see what happens in the new season starting tomorrow. I haven't read the manga because the anime adaptation is just so much better[in my opinion].

But still never expected this ending.
