I was completely surprised to see the level of animation that it had for the cgi, was the 2nd time i've been blowed away with how cgi has grown.

I'm not hating on CSM but the CGI wasn't that good but not bad either , to me is was just ok overall . They could have added a little more shading or tone to show his build because Denji looked like a plastic model at times but as long as Denji is in his uniform it won't look that bad because the clothes will give more detail to him whereas without a shirt on he was just a plain character model covered in red I guess .

the cgi seemed a little choppy at points but overall it's a good addition, liked it considerably more than some of the cgi from aot s4
really beautiful visuals through out the entire episode and hopefully the entire show

Since nowadays, people have low attention span. Companies are forced to produce products and services as fast as possible or they won't sell as fast as possible, that's the competition among companies right now. As for anime production, CGI speds up production.

Chainsaw man CGI definitely look better than AoT cgi, though not as good as Land of Lustrous

Probably, with the hype we're getting with chainsaw man, it gonna normalize CGI usage for future action heavy anime with detailed characters. I thinks this is the norm for modern anime now. From Cel animation, to digital 2d animation, now we are on the era of 2d-cgi blend animation.

There were moments where I found the cgi unnessesary and out of place, but the whole episode lookd stunning. Im just sad because I expected the action to be done masterfully, and in some places it looked weird. Also have you noticed that some shots look like from a videogame? (Zombie chase especially)

DENJI body moved janky, similar to INUYASHIKI(i am not a huge fan of it) after he pulled the cord at times.... atleast Devils and other movement were NOICE
I'm reducing my expectations for Vinland S2 now

I didn’t mind the CG utility poles, buildings, hallways, water droplet, etc. but the scenes with CG Denji fighting those zombies were surprisingly worse than I expected. The scenes with CG Makima were a bit questionable as well. Hopefully there’s way less CG in the other episodes.👌

First off, I think the CGI looks really great. I do think maybe scenes with a little less motion could have been done with 2D since it’s a little wonky and it wouldn’t be THAT many drawings

But just to put my two cents in

I don’t think CGI will be used as much in the anime as this episode makes it seem. I know people have claimed “well MAPPA lies in their trailers. Just look at AoT” but if you look back at the trailer, every scene from the Zombie Devil fight in the trailer looked like it did in the episode. I think it’s mostly there to help the animation team deliver the best work they can since asking for 12 episodes even filled with the animation we see in this episode is already fucking insane. If using a bit more CGI for the fight scenes means the standard talking scenes look this good, you will not see me complaining.

Also just a follow up. Keep in mind that CGI animation is REALLY FUCKING HARD and requires a totally different skillset than 2D. I’m tired of people acting like CGI is lesser or cheaper or easier than 2D. A lot of extremely skilled, talented, and passionate people worked on the CGI scenes and it really shows. I just personally think scenes where the models aren’t moving as much don’t play to that animation team’s strengths and it wouldn’t be too many new drawings to patch it up a bit. Even then little stuff like that HARDLY takes away from the show and anyone criticising the two shots where 3D Denji isn’t moving around much is frankly nitpicking just to nitpick. Props to the entire team and I can’t wait to see what else they have to show

3DCG anime can be great. CGIMan looks pretty rad even. It just felt sort of awkward and stilted when in motion. Killed the tempo a little.

Mappa did Dorohedoro though, right? I thought the 3DCG looked really dynamic in that so wha happun? Are they just that overworked?

The Cgi looked like shit and has no place in anime imo. I'd only tolerate it if it's done like Beastsrs and the whole show is in 3d, but mixing it with 2d ruins the anime. Unfortunately everything Mappa touches besides JuJutsu turns to shit. I wish Madhouse and Wit got exclusive access to all the great Mangas but oh well.

I mean, the CGI is not really the issue because CGI can be extremely good and beautiful in the right hands, just look at Arcane, it's one of the best shows I've watched so far, it was simply beautiful.

The problem is CGI in the wrong hands which make it look fucking ugly and that's exactly what happened here, this episode has plenty of CGI which actually looked good, however, the most important part is when he transformed into Chainsaw Man and this part has horrible CGI. That's my only complaint so far about this episode, that CGI was simply too fucking ugly and yeah, it did ruin the moment for me.

I think if there was heavy metal playing in the background I wouldn't even care, but just the sound of the chainsaw bothered me a little, but for some reason I've watched the scene of him massacring the zombies several times.

you are being sneaky it might not be intentional, but that's how it comes off. you are kind of faking that you are ok and open to people not liking it but then say: you want it to make sense or question people when they say they don't like it, or you say "its really good cgi (even if you don't like it.)"

But I really do think that if you dont like csm cgi probably you dont like cgi in general.

Nah, sometimes CGI can be great, but it depends on how it's used. Shows like Land of the Lustrous, Dragon Ball Super Hero, Arcane, RWBY, or Beastars are great examples of proper use of CGI that look great. The common theme with those shows though is that they all use exclusively CGI to animate the show. There's no jump in-between 2D drawn animation to CGI animation. The CGI in Chainsaw Man honestly looks fantastic. It's some of the best CGI in anime. But it's noticeable when the show switches between 2D and CGI. It can take some people out of the immersion of the story or action. I'd say I like CGI when it's the only method of animation the animators use, but intercutting 2D with CGI takes me out of it. Like I said, it still looks great, but it definitely put me off in a way. Still looking forward to watching the rest of the show, though I hope every fight is not suddenly animated in CG when Denji transforms.

ok after watching it again i have one MAJOR issue with the CG. Has Mappa never heard of anti-aliasing? This is literally like the most basic CG shit... have they never heard of MSAA?

Why the fuck is all their CG infested by jaggies? Same thing in AOT. Literally the CG would look almost perfect without them

The CG was okay, but it was still worse than the 2D animation, as it usually is. It doesn't ruin the show, but it definitely would be better if it was full 2D instead. Unfortunately, that's just not realistic.
