Let's face it, there's way too many threads on here about which underaged anime girls are sexier and how liking Chainsaw Man over Demon Slayer makes you have a BBC, and yet there's barely any threads about the beauty of water in anime??? WHAT?!!!

Water literally forms the hydrosphere of the planet we live on and we literally need it to survive, but despite that, no one wants to apperciate it in visual form, especially when it comes to anime. Well, it's time to change that! What animes has the most amazing looking water ever, so much so that it deserves a 10/10 for it alone?

I think Violet Evergarden is definitely up there! :3

why yes, i am bored as hell

that is a very questionable water shader at this part

also this looks totally different shader lol

but it is clever and well done, they show you the nice (looks drawn to my eyes idk) water and splash, transition to a separate water setup for a detail shot with huge vfx covering uglyness, and then a quick shot of a THIRD water setup that's also questionable looking for fancy camera work.

Violet evergarden also first comes to mind, especially the water in the movie is just on another level.
I'm now watching Nagi no asukara, the water also looks so amazing.

I don't think I've seen any that's prettier than The Garden of Words and it came out in 2013.

Absolutely! It's rather underrated, so I'm glad someone agrees.

Everyone is talking about the surface of the water but not things like whirlpools.

Cardcaptor Sakura:

And I like Toradora water:

Not in colors, gradients, filters and other more modern aspects, but in terms of animation, Ponyo:

Any water animated by Ghibli. From the ones I watched recently, I really liked the sea animation in Coo: Tooi Umi kara Kita Coo.

Not only Ghibli but the waves in Ponyo were animated by Maestro Miyazaki personally.

The water splashes in the violet evergarden scene look nice but the lake itself (was it lake? I think it was a lake) looks like it came it came from The Elder Scrolls Oblivion with a paint shader applied on it. The effect still works but it's something I noticed. I think I'll go with Ponyo. It's the fish movie made by a studio known for high production values and I think they delivered. Sprited Away's water also looks very nice.

Going a bit off track: have you ever seen The Prince of Egypt? The water looks pretty shit in it for the most part because DreamWorks really loved filling their films with shit CG and even calling it a selling point. BUT the scenes of the water turning into blood and the splitting of the Red Sea are some of the visually pleasing water effects (or visual effects in general) I've seen in animation.
