I've heard many times that the first season was altered quite a bit compared to the source material, most notably with Suzune Horikita being given a lot more screen time. My question is why this is such a terribe thing? Were the events of the LN truly so much greater to warrant this hate?

I personally would actually prefer if they kept Horikita as the lead heroine, but maybe that's because we share kind of similar characteristics in terms of temperament.

The two characters she replaced in certain scenes are both very popular, so a lot of the hate is from that. The rest is people joining in on the hate since she is just a popular character to hate. I personally (as a LN reader) don’t love her or hate her. There will be other female characters who will get more popular with the people just watching the anime as they get more screen time later in the series.

Sorry to randomly butt in, but is the LN worth reading? I just watched episode 1 of s2 and I just want to continue without waiting so long for the new episode XD.

the hate isn’t from her being included more in the anime people just don’t like her character that much

do whatever you want. the anime won’t be a bad adaptation of the source material if that’s what your worried about. i’d recommend just watching the anime and if you want more then continue with the light novel

I think so, yes. If you like the series, and don’t mind reading the book, its a very good choice. Whilst a lot of the content in the novel is arguably redundant/unnecessary, it does help to establish the characters and their relationships more. Extra COTE content is always good, anyway.

Man, COTE is a very big work because it is a Battle Royale between classes. You have to make room for the development of other characters.

Because the anime treats her as a main character in a way, while in the LN she is mostly a side character. Allot of scenes got changed where a difrent girl was present and not horikita.

Personally I hope they keep it that way lol. Horikita is one of my favourite characters and I'd like to see her character develop and for her to see the value of companionship.

Horikita received a lot more screen time than other characters up to the point of stealing moments that don't belong to her.
Also, Horikita was quite an annoying character in some volumes of the LN so many people dislike her (although her development is actually incredible and she is clearly one the best written characters)

it's because the scene that switches to her belongs to the two most popular girl characters in COTE Kei and Ichinose, so a lot of hate is coming from both fandoms.

I love Horikita. As a Light Novel reader, I'm an exception as everyone in the fandom either hates her or feels indifferent. I love how progressed through the series and the way she's written just doesn't appeal in a conventional sense, which is why I have gravitated towards her the most.

Hate is going to be there for her given the other two popular girls within the fandom. I don't care either way if they gonna stick with Horikita for this season or back to Kei as the Light Novels intended. Sooner or later, Horikita's development will come in anime form as it was in the Light Novels.

Yes! I used to be anime only but thought I'd give the CotE LN a try (my first LN) and was blown away with how much better it is and now I preorder each new volume as they are released

Dunno. Maybe because she's not fmc to begin with,so S1 kind of ruin that? I have some fav characters that's not even a lead heroine, like hiyori, sakayanagi and ichinose. Love kei,but prefer ichinose more.

people dont exactly hate her
the thing is the development that other character supposed to get is given to horikta, this in itself is not bad but in light novels author had already given us tremendous growth of horikta as a character later (in season 3 u will see) so the point was if horikta already bound to get such a development then why steal the moments of other characters
if u like horikta then u gonna love season 3 but season 1 and season 2 should like what they are, horikta fans have to wait for their moment and right now let other shine since its a battle royale so there's a lot of characters to see and understand them

personally most fav character is Horikita. I'd very much her to stay in the lead role. I do not like Karuizawa one bit. i don't give a fuck about what happened in the LN. anime has its own story to tell.

Part of the problem with the changes is that at the time the first season aired, there were only like 6 volumes of the LN released. If you consider when they would've started planning and creating the series, it would've been long before the 6th volume came out, probably even well before the 5th volume.

So they didn't actually know which characters were going to be important later in the story. This is why it is somewhat dangerous to make changes when you don't know the potential consequences of said changes. As an example, Karuizawa was a very minor character in the beginning of the series. If they knew how important she was going to become, they might not have replaced her parts with Horikita's parts. (I'm not saying she is more important than Horikita)

It's entirely possible they just assumed that Horikita was going to be the main heroine, and thus decided to make those changes. But at the end of the day, she isn't, so the extra focus from the first season is at best, misleading. It's understandable that some fans might be upset.

Making changes isn't in and of itself an inherently terrible thing. But there are implications when you don't understand what you are changing.

For me personally I don't hate her, and I don't hate season 1. I just think she is kind of boring. Especially compared to all the other girls in the series.

Its not that she is a bad character its just that the original story is better

Because LN readers cry that their favourite girl wasn't in a scene where they were supposed to be and were replaced with Horikita there.

For me, I dislike her because I dislike her (I know, pretty repetitive reason), not helpful that she reminds me a lot of Yukino Yukinoshita.

She replaced Ichinose and Kei in the anime and for me her obsession with Kushida is just stupid and beyond help

she gets better later on but for most of it she's just really immature and prideful. as her brother says mistaking isolation for independence

Honestly i Don't think youre gonna be disappointed about horikita development in the ln she probably has the best development in the whole series it was almost at the very end of year 1 ln im assuming people who hate her is mostly because of the changes in s1 scenes even though theres not even a lot of scenes that was changed in s1 and they also most likely haven't gotten far that yet in the ln

That's honestly what make her an amazing character imo a character who has a room for growth and the author definitely did amazing job on her character

That quote really stuck with me too; very well written from the author.

MonkeSupremacy don't get offended. But when the MC of the anime himself calls another character useless. That character archives a level of infamy far greater than any we the viewers can bestow upon them. Considering we tried extra hard, especially for characters like Sakura Haruno. And yet Ayanokouji put us to shame, with just that one sentence he slapped Horikita over the face with.
