Hey guys, I just finished this last night. It took me about about 3/4 days to finish and I’m curious how people feel about it. It personally didn’t draw me in enough to warrant the rating I see it constantly being given. I saw the twist with the monster rats coming early on so that big reveal did not land for me. Up until Episode 8 I was mostly confused and annoyed with the kids. But I definitely enjoyed it more after that point. The “war arc” was my favourite part of the show and I also liked the episodes where our characters actually learned things. I found the characters kind of bland, but I’d love to hear what you guys have to say, maybe clarify some things or enlighten me! I want to hear why you guys enjoyed/disliked this show! All love!

I gave it an 8, it's certainly not a near-perfect series in my eyes but the reason I love it is that its pros are extremely rare to find in any other show. Like the subtle and inventive world building that isn't too far from reality but also has so many fresh supernatural concepts that aren't your usual dragons or demon lords. The pacing of when things get revealed is also really well-made, it adds this conspiracy like feeling to things and always gives me this constant feeling of helplessness. Great and memorable directing is also something you rarely see in shows.

(Also, it's the only anime that I've seen that had a genuine and traditional horror aspect, like in episode 19, and that aspect is almost non-existent in anime)

It all flowed with each other so well and formed such a dark yet beautiful atmosphere.

The two biggest gripes I have with the series are the characters and ending. It felt like the author thought of the entire world and atmosphere and added the characters later, they feel like placeholders so that the show has a cast instead of being actually compelling. They tried to show how the MC was special in a few parts by saying she's pure and strong or something but it never felt earned, which is such a waste

And the last few episodes just felt devoid of purpose to me, their actions made sense but they didn't have the detail and depth of the beginning of the show and just felt like going from point A to point B to point C, etc. to get something done. I know why they should get it done but I don't know why they elongate it so much.

(I could also talk about how the message was forced and awkwardly placed but this is getting too long so I'll just end it here)
I don't speak English that much, so please cut me some slack

Personally for me it’s the best anime ever made. I love the slow build, the ominous visuals, the free thinking sexuality, the time skip, music, characters, animation and story all were a ten for me. I’ve watched this with two of my friends and they don’t understand my love for it either

I feel like it’s definitely a hit or miss show for many, honestly I’m surprised it’s rated so high as I feel this show does not appeal to a casual anime viewer at all. I’m curious why you liked the characters so much though? I enjoyed the monster rats, the grandma leader lady, but the children felt pretty one note for me, I think my favourite kid was satorou. Who was yours? :)

Satorou is the man for sure, I can see that for mamarou but I feel like Maria and watanabe displayed a lot of depth to them even if it wasn’t necessarily growth, you could say Maria stayed true to her character of always being used for someone’s else’s gratification, watanabe’s will never folded she was able to persevere through a lot and come out the other side. I actually didn’t see the rats thing coming I thought it was sick enough they were splicing rats with human dna. It was a show I watched early in my anime watching life, and the animation and concept was pretty unique to me, I was used to only watching shonens mostly so this opened up my world a lot so that’s another reason it has a special place for me probably

Cool setting and sci-fi concepts, lacking in presentation while the characters are wholly non-existent(actually, there's Squealer). I'd appreciate this if the author could write characters for shit.

honestly, i reallllly disliked this show. at the beginning, i was super excited; the concept and animation were interesting and i was quickly invested. however, over the course of the show, the animation devolved and the plot turned out to be very basic, no matter how hard it tried to be “thought provoking.”

the episode where the library horse thing talked for literally a full 20 minutes was horrible and basically summarized how fast the show was going downhill. the creators did not understand show-not-tell whatsoever, and when they did, the animation was so shitty and poorly drawn it did not have any effect. again, at the beginning of the show, the animation was very clean. but somewhere (i think it’s about episode five or something) the quality turn a sharp turn for the worse.

another huge issue i had with the show was the character relations. at the beginning, they hinted at betrayal between the two main girls and i was very excited for that. none of that came into fruition; at least not to the extent where it is even mentionable. with the brainwashing-esque mind control the leaders of the town did on the characters, there was so much potential. again, this was a huge letdown and the show suffered because bland characters could not do anything with ok plot bones.

overall, this show was just really bland and disappointing. certainly not worth the time investment in my opinion, but i have pretty high standards.

Hi Chloe! I can tell you have high standards by taking a brief glimpse at your MAL, what makes a good anime for you? Because I noticed popular and critically successful shows like HXH, FMAB were rated quite low for their standards. What makes an anime a 7-10 range for you? That’s what most of the shows I end up completing get rated as if they were much lower I would drop them. Thanks!

hi!! i know i am such a tough grader lol but i guess that's because i'm really into film and learning about filmmaking, so i usually just have higher standards for shows (i hope that doesn't sound too pretentious of me even though i know it totally does). basically what makes a 7 - 8 for me is a show that is really strong in one or two categories (animation, writing, plot, character development, etc), 9 being essentially an 8 but more original if that makes any sense? like it's a plot or concept that isn't super overdone like basic shonen tropes. a 10 is really incredible on all accounts but it's really hard to earn that from me haha. since i know i'm so tough on shows, i would say that anything i have rated a 4 or above is worth a watch, it's just not as well made as some of the things i have rated higher. as for why i rated specific shows like hxh lower, message me if you're really interested cause that is gonna be a much longer discussion lol. anyway, hope that helps (*^‿^*)

I gave this anime a 10 because honestly it gave me pretty much everything I wanted. I loved the mystery, lore, and worldbuilding a lot, plus I really like dystopias as well. My only complaints are the main cast being kinda bland even though I still liked them and the inconsistent and aging animation. Soundtrack was absolutely beautiful to me and I think the 1st ending is easily top 5 of all time imo. I do understand why this isn't for everyone though. It can definitely be a slow burn and at some point I thought "where is this going?", but I stuck with it and I'm so glad I did. Top 5 anime for me

I gave it 8/10. I didn’t like episode 17-25 as much after the time skip but the rest was really good.

Nah it's just overrated garbage

I tried to watch but dropped it so many times. It's very boring. The mystery is so bad, the characters suck, they have no depth whatsover. It's worse than Steins Gate.

The original source is clearly a very interesting analysis of the evil side of the human nature.

I think Shinsekai Yori had the plot to be a masterpiece, but it definitely wasn't well animated. I liked the overall artstyle, but there were clearly some cheap, not really well directed scenes throughout the series.

Anyway, I think it could've been a must watch anime should it was produced with better resources.

Overall, the story was great, very thoughtful, the plottwist was good, although you could've figured it before (which is good, it means the story gave you the elements to figure things out rather than just dropping it all of sudden) and I really enjoyed the world building and its rules and mechanics. I won't lie, though, it was a little bit boring sometimes. Its pace can be somewhat too slow as well.

It was an amazing story told poorly.

Its one of a few shows I have watched, that genuinely makes me shiver out of fear, hate, or desperation... To the point that I can only lying in bed staring blankly at the ceiling for 30 minutes after watching an episode

One of a few shows I gave 9/10 despite some things I dislike about this show. I'm pretty generous in giving score though

I just finished this show and I’m kinda disappointed. Maybe I’m a casual viewer and couldn’t get into it. Maybe it went over my head.

I don’t have any problems with the first arc where they are children, but everything after that was frustrating for me.

Satoru/Shun and Maria/Saki threw me off at the beginning of the teenager arc. Satoru’s personality as a child made no sense to me for him to be chasing Shun the way he was. I feel like I didn’t know Maria enough at all to understand why she loved Saki, and it sometimes seemed like Saki didn’t either? Outside of the whole “seek comfort/love when stressed” gene.

And then Maria and Mamoru disappear almost immediately afterwards. It feels like they barely existed as characters.

By the last arc, I was fairly disinterested but wanted to finish the series. The last episode felt rushed and boring, but I understand how it was meant to be thought-provoking.

I loved Psycho Pass and really enjoyed Steins Gate, but I’m happy to move on from this one.

I think I gave it a 7/10 but not because I found it to be mediocre, but because there was actually good and bad at the same time.

I loved the start and was really curious where it would go given the coming of age and sci-fi themes. There was potential to explore novel ideas and concepts (how does a group of kids cope with a society based on quasi-eugenics and bunga-bunga-genetic-modification? How does one hide his disloyalty to the state and "rebel" under the radar? Stasi much?).

But the last arc of the show completely shattered all hopes I had. Oh really, an elaborate story about why slavery and genocide are bad? Are you kidding me? That isn't a story in the same way 3+3=6 isn't a groundbreaking new discovery in mathematics. This is absolutely redundant. Pointless.

Why go for the most boring and unimaginitive resolution possible instead of doing some Madoka Magica sh*t and actually doing something groundbreaking?

The beginning and middle of the show, all the things introduced, the character changing moments, the interpersonal relationships, all of it wasted on a "no u" finale?

I'd have given it a 10/10 had the kids just denied the humanity of the demon over and over again, lied to themselves for so long and so many repetitions until they'd even had altered their subconcious and just killed the demon the same way one flattens a fly.

At least this would have said *something* about us humans as a species. Something about the human condition.

Probably the most boring anime I watch that makes me think for days about the plot twist and Squealer's final quote and his fate in the jar, I would rank this lower than SAO, in other words this show is actually worse than SAO.

Edit : I realized the score dropped so hard compared to other series from 2010s. I recall it was 8.45 two years ago.

Going to exclude the pairing process in one of the episodes because what the fuck was that lmao but I think the mystery elements were nicely executed and had a bit of trauma knowing the cause of the death though what's lacking in this series, for the most part, is the character depth, especially with the side ones.

This show is the proof that psykers are evil and the Emperor was right all along!
