Do you find it strange neither Misty nor Serena have appeared this series so far?

I think that their return may be like dawn and they can reveal special posters or get them into the opening by changing some scenes. But I think they will return as brock has returned and clemont and Bonnie will also be returning, so it's Natural for the mist popular pokegirls to return.

Max hasn’t come back since the end of AG, so I’d honestly like to see him return

The difference is nobody really expects characters like Max or Tracey to show up. Max won't appear on his own without May for example.

But Misty and Serena really have nothing holding them back from appearing.

Either way, Serena's absence in over 6 years is pretty glaring. It makes you wonder why the writers abandoned her following the kiss scene.

As for Misty, well it's obvious, we're in Kanto for 70% of the episodes and Brock technically showed up already. I'd be surprised if they don't make a usual generic Misty/Brock reunion ep before this arc ends.

I mean most other characters are confirmed to show up besides a few like Cilan, so who else is there?

The last two comments of this thread are the answer for your question. Misty already appeared last season and Serena is the icing on the cake due to her relationship with Ash, but both will eventually be back as the staff promised.

This series is the worst series ever I seen in Pokemon series. I thought Sun and Moon is the worst I guess it's bad then that if Serina or Grininja don't return.

this is the worst take I have ever seen. Sun and Moon anime is severely underrated, it just follows a new formula that honestly was jarring at first but really works once you're used to it. Journeys is also quite good, it's more childish sure but it's ideas and concepts are some of the best in the series. That slowking rap battle, the world coronation series, project mew, all great ideas. The multi-region exploration is nice too. I still standby XY being the best and I don't think they'll ever capture that high again but Sun and Moon and Journeys were definitely good. Journeys has some glaring flaws like the absence of a dedicated villain past The Darkest Day arc, and Koharu feels way like a cliche girl character (aside from the undecided future part that was nice), but it really makes up for that in charm, ideas, and the soundtrack

I find it strange that 20 years after Misty finally left the series, you still somehow find ways to harp on her. Misty already appeared several times in Sun and Moon so nobody really misses her, so there's hardly any demand for her return, unlike there was for Dawn who had been absent since Unova.

As for Serena, literally nobody cares about her aside from AmourShippers. But since Clemont and Greninja will be back soon, that sets a precedent for her to come back at some point too. Maybe. Anyways literally every old traveling companion has a chance to come back, except May for VA reasons.

I mean the modern day Serena fan reminds me how Misty fans were (or even still are) back in the early 2000's. They spend years and decades hoping for their female character to return, complaining about whatever the current series/saga is and the new female lead, and sit there in vain for decades waiting for something that never happens besides a brief cameo.

If you think Serena fans complaining for 6 years is extreme, there's literally 20 years of Misty fans doing the same thing through the entire span AG/DP/BW/XY/SM, etc. were all airing. As someone who was in the online fandom when all those sagas were "new" and airing for the first time, the amount of conspiracy theories I saw people post about Misty returning for two decades would make your head spin.

Some of them are still ranting to this day on their twitters and other social media.

She returned in AG with togepi goodbye
She was also in the ONA of 10 year celebration
She returned in Battle frontier again with marrill
Than she was reference in DP with her Lure
She was in Flashback of Charizard reunion
She appeared thrice or more in sun and moon
And in the journeys well she had a silhouette when ash explains gym leaders
I mean she did appeared a lot

Now that Serena has appeared, it's just Misty.

I'm seeing certain people on twitter having mental breakdowns over Misty not appearing yet. Like they're cursing out the writers, making troll posts, saying how much they hate the show, etc.

Is this normal? Especially considering the people doing this are 25-30 year old adults, and not young teens. It's very odd behavior.

I'm more concerned about Serena's 20-30 year old fans who will go as far as to demoralize, downvote or even ban you from the thread if you dare to say you didn't like the reunion scene with Ash in JN105 and actually prove why it was an extremely lazy, rushed and generic scene and that people are seeing things that just aren't there, let alone criticize the character itself or the XY series. And sadly this isn't just a hypothesis, it's actually happening.
