I used to be very much into psychological (thrillers in particular) when I started watching anime, but there aren't that many of those to keep me going, so these days I'd mecha is my favorite genre.

my favourites use to be romance and slice of life, now its adventure and fantasy (preferably medieval)

its surprising there really isnt a lot of anime that actually have a legitimate adventure based story, most just have the tag slapped on
