Cook is actually the more common term here in the US at least when it comes to people who cook at home and at fast food places and diners. Chef gets more often reserved for more fine dining or the head chef. English has a lot of double words coming from both German and French origin because of French aristocrats in England in the past caused an import of French words. To this day the French derived words are usually considered the more fancy terms and the Germanic origin words considered lower class or more domestic without people knowing why. |
