A Cosmonaut means Russian astronaut so is she Russian? I don't remember it mentioning Russia in the anime unless I missed something. I've only seen episodes 1 & 2.

The story takes place in an alternative world where Russia is called Zirnitra.

I usually never post anything because people can be mean but this anime is not in our world. There are only two countries the Union of Zirnitra Republics in the east, and the United Kingdom of Arnak in the west. So technically no she is not
No where it says there are only two countries, they just mentioned those two because they are the most important.

Honestly I deleted my post because I decided to rewatch the first episode which I haven’t done in a while and noticed I was way off 😂

Since the country featured is supposed to be a kind of alternate world version of Russia/the Soviet Union, the way Irina and her family and broader people are characterized and treated in this world especially by some of the Soviet analogue elite cosmonauts, political, and military leadership brass, is akin to how some of the Soviet Union's ethnic minorities from the Central Asian Soviet Socialist Republics (SSRs) or even some minorities from within the eastern part of the Russian SSR (as opposed to European Russia) were viewed. Rosa Plevitskaya, in particular, is portrayed as a human supremacist against vampires, but could easily be seen as a Russian supremacist against Asian Soviets and Irina as a minority from a village in an autonomous oblast.

Of course, it isn't that simplistic and Marxist-Leninist communist ideology of the CPSU was officially not racist or racialist, anti-racist, and against racial and ethnic chauvinism, and there were many non-ethnic Russian Soviet figures even in key positions, but there was discrimination still against some groups depending on the exact time period, location, and specifics. The country went through a lot of tumultuous changes in its 69 years of history.

Essentially yes, since Zirnitra is an AltHis version of Russia located in the same place with a similar culture, but on paper, no.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

In general, Irina is a Russian name with Greek roots. But her surname is actually Romanian with the u removed at the end.

Within the lore of the show, vampires are indigenous people in some remote part of this version of the USSR.

I think it's more a member state of the Soviet Union, at least in the alternative world setting.
