What do you think about the dub? Personally, I don't like a lot of the voices but I find that the jokes are a little funnier hearing them in a language I understand.

Yeah the jokes are much funnier in a language that i understand. I like Death the Kid's dub voice, Soul Liz and Patty's too. Tsubaki also has a nice voice and Maka's dad has a great voice. Vic Monigan (sp?) is a wonderful voice actor, I've only sen up to episode 6, I hope his character will have more air time to put his voice to good use. I find Black star's voice to be annoying,...maybe I just cant stand the Yahoos.

I think I can get used to the voices, though after watching the sub twice some people might sound a bit weird. Still I'm glad they kept the humour at that high quality. I found myself laughing much more than watching the sub. Early days so I think the VAs will improve

That's a good point. I hope they do.

Black Star sounds so much like a girl but when I got to the fourth episode, it didn't sound as annoying as it had before. So I think I'll be able to get used to it.

And is it just me, or does Tsubaki sound older than she should?

Voice rating (ep01)

Shinigami: Bad
Maka: Decent
Soul: Decent
Maka's dad: Meh
Blair: Decent
Black Star: Too girly
Tsubaki: Bad. Sounds like an android LOL.

Atleast they left the intro song intact. I also think they're gonna screw Death the Kid. His Japanese voice was just perfect.

Ok just saw a bit of ep004

Death the Kid: Bad. His Japanese voice was SO much better, I don't like this one.
Liz: OK
Patty: OK

Soul: Micah sounds great as Soul, and proves to be a breakout VA (Great)
Maka: Laura Bailey kind of sounds tired at some points (Good)
Spirit: Vic's spot on nuff said
Shinigamai: It's the best Funi could do, but I wonder about voice differentation

Black Star: I know this is Karbowski's first male role, but she by the episode 5 clip she just hasn't grown on me (Borderline)
Tsubaki: I'm surprised at Rial's vocal range, shes usually the high pitche annoying character. (Good)
Mifune: I was iffy, but he's fine

Death the Kid: Todd sounds a lot more different than Mamoru, but in a surprising good way
Patty: Sounds good
Liz: Likewise

I'm interested on how Maxey Whitehead will do with Chrona, and Luci Christian for Medusa on that matter.

FANsubs FTW
i don't buy damaged merchandise

from my experience, north american variations of anime are butchered, watered down, and censored versions of something that needed no alteration.

of course, appealing to the largest demographic means more money. unfortunately, that means catering to everyone's insecurities. so people arent offended by the content, the content itself is altered. hence damaged merchandise.

if in the first episode, soul does not make fun of Maka's chest size, i'll know if freedom of speech weighs more than money.

if everything has been translated and dubbed as ACCURATELY as is possible, i will buy the entire series for myself and maybe a few friends.

i would rather turn to piracy than be swidled into buying damaged merchandise.

it will be hard for the English voice actors to do better than the Japanese. Actually, i would be happier to buy the series in Japanese with subtitles.

He does make fun of Maka's chest size. It's been a while since I saw the first few episodes subbed but they seemed pretty much the same if not very close.

i watched a bit of the dubbed episode 1. i love the Japanese voice actors too much to adjust. little things like Maka's grunt and kyup while she fought the ripper were left out, but is something vital to me. without things like that grunt and kyup, it seems too staged.

sigh

i wonder if i can buy a subtitled version... will the dubbed version also have a
Japanese+(eng)sub option?

..... Umm.... bilingual anime dvds aren't aren't exactlty news anymore. As far as Funimation titles go, every anime on dvd comes with both english and japanese audio with english subtitles. The only dvds that don't come with english audio nowadays are the ones where the anime isn't as popular such as Kannagi, Hayate Combat Butler, Clannad, and Toward the Terra.

that's good to know, thank you.

i am assuming the english script is an alteration of the translation, for the sake of lip sinking, to make it seamless.
are the subtitles the original Japanese to English translation, or the Japanese to English to English alteration?

i watched the dubbed version again and noticed a faint grunt in the fight scene. i also must say there are some good qualities of the English voice actors, but not nearly enough to outperform the Japanese actors, in my opinion.

well, if the English subs are translated with as much accuracy as is possible, i am sold. this series is awesome.

Well have you been seeing the subtitled episodes on the Funimation website? I'm not sure which fan translations you saw, but Funimation do have staff members in which translating is their professional worker. So the subtitles should be accurate.

You would have to either wait for Funimation themself to release through at least episode 7 in english dub on their website or purchase the dvd box set on February 6th 2010. I will say this though, the one to cast as Crona is Maxey Whitehead who also will be casting as Alphonse Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with any of her other roles.

I haven't seen anything on Crona thus far other than the VA for him/her. But the first four episodes are here. http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=show&b=236

I saw some clips on youtube.

I think Soul sounds emotionless and bored and his voice is slightly too deep for my liking.
Maka was pretty well done. No problems with her.
Not heard much of BlackStar, but as for sounding like a girl, he does a bit, but he did in Japanese at first too.
Tsubaki sounded ok.
Death the Kid sounded a bit too camp... which was ok for the silly parts I guess, but not good for when he is serious.
Liz and Patty were spot on imo.
That's all I have heard so far, but my opinions mean nothing until I actually watch full eps of the series in Englsh, not just clips.

Despite the Maka's chest issue being resolved. In common Japanese originals/ language some word that are Japanese tend to have a lot more syllables (Which causes your lip syncing problem) Funi stayed really close to the original script.

In common scripts for dubs other words have to put into a characters lines for the sake of syncing voices. If one sentence in Japanese said "Master sempai" commonly it's translated to "Master", and since that one word won't fit, they usually have to add something.

You can find clips of Maxey Whiteheads voice as Czelaw Mayer from the Baccano! dub to compare for a possible Chrona.

I guess this is an old topic, but I finally got around to watching the English Dub; I'm only a few episodes in, but so far - I HATE IT.

The only voices that I consider decent are Maka and Soul's, but even then I feel like they are a more emotionless version of their Japanese counterparts.

Black Star sounds like a girl.

Grim Reaper sounds horribly whiny; it was annoying enough in Japanese, but this is way worse.

Death the Kid sounds like a British fancy boy and I hate that they couldn't find someone to do Patty's laugh; it was damn near the best part of the series. Liz's voice is fine; kind of nasally.

As far as Sid goes i feel like I'm watching Yu Yu Hakisho or DBZ whenever he speaks.

Seriously though, why not find someone that can laugh like Japanese version of Patty!!!!!?? Woe is me!

So far it seems as though they haven't censored or omitted anything from the original Japanese version, which is a surprising, yet welcomed discovery. Although they seem to have definitively made Crona a boy, which in my mind is an unnecessary edit for Americans who have issues when it comes to gender roles.

EDIT: Crona seems detached and less angsty than he should, he's continuously referred to as being male even though his gender is supposed to be ambiguous. His mother, that snake witch (forgot her name) has a seemingly fitting voice. Lastly, Ragnarok's voice is less annoying kinda like an 80's DJ, but now it seems less fitting; I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I actually prefer the dub to the original. I still can't get used to the Japanese voices, since I don't think they suited the characters in the first place. Laura Bailey is perfect for Maka, and Soul's and Tsubaki's voice are okay. Black Star sounds like a girl in the original, so I see no difference there. Shinigami-sama sounds goofy and great, and Liz and Patty are pretty spot on, as well. Love Patty's dub laugh. Vic as Spirit is FANTASTIC.

The only ones I have a slight problem with are Stein, since he does sound kinda boring sometime, but for the most part it doesn't really bother me. Kid also sounds... a bit off, but I thought Mamoru was an odd choice for him, as well.

Then how exactly would they refer to Crona? English doesn't have some ambiguous way to refer to someone gender-wise without calling them an "it". They had to use something to refer to Crona as, and it makes sense for them to use one or the other (he or she).

I also think Black Star sounds too girly. Naruto's voice actor in both English and Japanese was also female, but that was done much better.

Blair's pumpkin song was AWESOME. I don't think I would have appreciated it nearly as much if it was in Japanese.

I also thought the Grimm Reaper sounded like Tobi from Naruto.

I like Souls voice, though it would have been a little better had he been older. I don't like Black Star's voice but he's supposed to be irritating so it works out. Cronas voice is a little annoying, but he's supposed to be whiny. Spirit is great (yay Edward Elric :D), and Professor Stein as well.

I think they did a pretty good job with the voices.
I wandered through fiction to look for the truth.

I dont really care about the voices, is there anything else, apart from the voices that are different?
Cut scenes, etc?
Why are dubbed episodes also longer then subbed?
