First of all I'm not a Miyazaki fan , I'm just new to Ghibli movies . Other than mononoke hime I've only watched Spirited Away . And I don't know why but both of them just didn't feel like a masterpiece anime . By the number of people who gave Mononke Hime a masterpiece rating , I can clearly understand how great it is considered in all of anime .

I really wished I could have seen this movie in the same perspective as everyone who loved it but I just can't seem to relate. Same goes for Spirited Away .

Mononoke Hime had really good and unique animation like most other Ghibli movies , most charecters didn't seem to be intersting other than San. It had great world building .The story felt unique but wasn't able keep my attention through out it and felt boring at many parts.

Overall it was 7/10 experience for me . I feel like it's just my problem that I can't relate to a classic anime like this one or Spirited Away or Akira. But I'm not giving up on trying more of these kind of anime.

I also get the same idea when I watched it first time. I guess I kinda didn't appreciate the story for the first time, and probably worth a rewatch for reevaluation

I’ll try to help despite English be not my native language lol. The greatness of Mononoke imo stands into the impossibility of Ashitaka/us watchers to take a position in this war of “everyone against everyone”, which is pictured in the movie. If you think really hard about it, everyone, San too, do some despicable things. But, literal everyone, even the fricking Monk lol, has some excusatory and reasons. You basically can’t cheer easily for nobody. Except for Ashitaka. He is, I think, the most “human” character I have ever seen, with the most incredibile humanity. He won’t take a position, it’s too difficult for him (he loves San, but he also was helped by her enemies etc etc) and he single-handed tries to save everyone, without hurting everyone’s plans.

I’ll have so much more things to say lol, If you want you can check my review (it’s in Italian unfortunately). This is really a very complex film and I feel that it’s not understood enough.

Bro, princess mononoke is miles better than spirited away, all shinkai movies and a silent voice (the movie was garbages and the manga is far superior)

It's like James Cameron's Avatar but with sense. Maybe it's the end it's quite rushed but it's a very good film. If you don't like it it's OK because maybe you are not fond of that Kind of story.

This right here. Don't get me wrong I love spirited away, but I've always personally preferred mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle.

I didn't grew up with Ghibli movies too and I feel the same way, like sure it is a really good movie but I think there are so much better things? Idk I think nostalgia has to do with the appreciation for this film

I really love mononoke. I think it captures a lot of what our world struggles with today. We’re introduced to ashitaka a boy who’s eyes are unclouded by ignorance, with no world view or opinions he ventures towards a world of unknown. When I think of masterpiece I think of this works just because of how we’re introduced to both sides, is it wrong to pursue the future, and technology, providing for your people and the next generation? Or is San right in standing for the right to preserve the environment and what it has to offer? I think by presenting us with all the facts, we’re challenged to see both sides of a futile arguement of which humanity struggles to answer. Princess mononoke is full of Japanese mythology, symbolism, and immaculate visuals, which is why I have it as a 9.

Yeah it's a nice movie but not everyone can consider it as a masterpiece or an unforgettable experience.

I understand the appeal they have for lotsa target audiences, but Ghibli movies are nothing special IMO, the studio is just very praised and lotsa people also have nostalgia for it.

Only movie I found worth the hype was Castle in the Sky, that one really delivered on the feeling of adventure, rest range from just good to plain awful snorefests.

At the time of release, they were revolutionary masterpieces...but times change. Animation and production advances to new heights. We will see posts about modern masterpieces in 20 years saying the same thing.

It’s not much different from Zelda: Ocarina of Time being donned among the greatest - it truly is for it’s time.
Mononoke came out in 1997, a factor that I think needs heavier consideration

Well to me it’s the fantasy elements of it and how relevant it is to the modern world

It's one of those movies that was revolutionary at the time of its release, but nowadays probably doesn't feel special because so many anime series have borrowed ideas from it and basically eroded some of the movie's legacy.

Amen, man!! Spirited Away is a fun and surreal visual feast, but Mononoke has a far superior story and protagonist.

What pushed it past 7/10 range for me was that it was a fantasy setting where there weren't clear good and bad guys. Everybody was just trying to make their lives better in a changing world. I like stories that are morally grey.

I'm sure there is stuff today that treads the same waters and have polished animation, but you have to give it props for coming out in 1997. Mononoke upped the game for all of anime.

It’s very beautiful and hits the hardest if you watched it as a kid. Haven’t rewatched this movie in a WHILE though
