waa.. they're doing a great work here. Didn't expect that part after the ED. By the way, OP and ED are AMAZING. Really, i want A1 to adapt all the volumes. I've never seen something like this.

overall it was a really good episode and I like some of the characters that are being introduced along with their potential in the story.
Seems like glasses boi is going to parallel Shin's older brother Rei in his relationship with his younger sister, which will make for an interesting dynamic between him and shin as they get to know each other.
I also liked Shin's behaviour during the times he was just fitting in. It felt like he was really carrying the past with him and it's clear that the one character who the author had the strongest mental image of was Shin.
However with some of the other cast members I felt like their transition to normal lives was a bit inconsistent. Anju and Raiden specifically weren't introduced with any hints of their former lives until the mechas were marching through. I just don't buy any of them would be able to integrate that well into society, and from a storytelling perspective it would have been stronger if it was more emphasised to the audience.

That said I think Frederika is also an interesting character - perhaps she has the same psychic ability as Shin's family had and she was able to read his mind? But then the connection should be a two way street and although Shin is quiet and devious I don't think it's to that extent. Suffice to say she's a lot more mature than she's let on and it's not consistent with what's been presented so far in such as way that I'm sure would require the introduction of either de-aging tech or some other sci-fi ability.
-had typed this out as a note partially to myself as I was watching it hence why it's not considering that last part of the show. But tbh the way frederika's ability works doesn't make a lot of sense within the world that's been set up. Also in a modern military with actual standards there's no way they'd allow a little girl to join up in any form.

I'm going to be honest with you. You are maybe one of the only critical thinkers about show I like/ looking forward to read his take, because you actually try to make sense.

The only thing I can say about Frederica is that seeing the past/present of other people, basically any person kinda made her mature faster, but she still a child so that's why she is is kinda have this both sides.

And regarding the matter about her joining the army, I'm pretty sure it will be answered next or after that episode. I can tell you with spoiler marks, it's nothing huge, if you need to know.

I guess I'll wait until we find out in the show

but as for Frederica's ability, let's think for a moment about how the technology in the show works. So we have established that you can create telepathic links between people. We also know that there are some very special people that naturally possess this ability. Theoretically speaking perhaps you could use such a link to hijack the memory of a person and directly access it. But reading the future is physically impossible within the world we've been introduced to thus far and quite frankly it feels ridiculous. Scientifically you could theoretically predict the future if you had access to all variables down to the sub-atomic level. There are many people who ascribe to that discipline of quantum theory. But I don't see how even that could be the case. In order for Frederika to be able to scientifically predict the future she'd have to have access and the ability to process data down to the sub atomic level. So even if her telepathy somehow allowed her to "scan" the entire world through the legion or something like that then she still wouldn't be able to process it.

however the concept of being linked to a gigantic AI hivemind like the Legion and using it to accomplish impossible feats is a really cool sci-fi idea that I hope actually is incorporated into the story at some point.

She is not reading the future. She is reading the past and present. So basically once she meets you, she can see your entire life, your struggles, and everything that made you who you are right now. Also she knows your true intentions, so you can't lie to her. Also this works even if Frederica and a person she met already is not in the same room. So that's why she knew where to find Shin for example, she knows his present that he is in the library.

Basically there are certain esper bloodlines, and Shind and Frederica are one of the few people on the planet to have powers.

Life became good for them after all the trouble Shin, Anjou, Theo, Kurena and Raiden went through. It felt like a dream... They've been in Giad for a month, and adapted well, even though Shin seemed to be a little off.

We were introducted to Eugene an Nina Rantz, and both spent a lot of time in the library, since they don't have money for school. They seem to be quite important to the plot. We also discovered Frederica holds the power to know about one's future and past.

Ernst became very close to the 86ers, and tried to keep them there. But it was needed for them to go and avenge their friends. After all, they couldn't stay in comfort for too long, or they would lose their awareness and caution. And turns out Frederica holds close objectives, and decided to go with them.

The opening is fine, but I guess the band of the first one was better for the mood. The ending is very cool though, and I hope they use this song more.

well in that case do you remember the scene where Shin walked in behind her and she didn't notice?
I guess you could say she just said that to humour him, but it does somewhat disturb the internal consistency of the show for a joke.

This was a nice episode. I like the chill vibe it gave and Shin's adventure with the library early on in the episode was surprisingly entertaining lol

The ending was pretty good but as I expected, I prefer the old one.

She needs to actively use it to focus on people. So she wasn't using her power at the moment when Shin sneaked on her.

Raiden asking the important questions. Seriously, how old is Frederica? She looks like ten now (+- a year or two) or did she rule as a baby with her godlike esper powers in the past? xD But I am guessing maybe something happened to her body and mentally she is way older.

A pretty good ep overall.

Good episode

I think this episode depicts war-related PTSD very well. Shin and others try to go back to having a regular life, but find themselves not being able to truly forget about the battlefield and at the end, they choose to return there. Showing each character having flashbacks (in a subtle way) during the parade was well executed.

Didn't really care about the whole story about Frederica, but the rest of episode was well done.

I guess we'll have to wait for the show to give its own official explanation
until then I don't see any point in trying to refute what you're saying with my extremely limited knowledge

Loving the continued world-building and battlefield artillery / weapon design in this series (those Vanagandrs!). I'm excited to see Giad's side in the war and how the Spearhead will resume fighting on behalf of the Federacy. I take it from Shin's voiceover announcing the next episode that he'll be the central protagonist this season like how Lena was first season's. I wonder how much of her we'll really see this season?

Frederica is still annoying and a bit tonally dissonant to me, but at least she got interesting quick!!

I must note that I really love the general characterization of Spearhead. Their personalities all complement each other well, with Shin and Anju's cool-headedness nicely contrasting against Theo and Kurena's somewhat more youthful and brash / extroverted personalities, and Raiden being a nice inbetween.

This episode was actually really good. I loved how that white haired guy talked with shin and how kurena said that she wants to go back to the battle field. In the last seconnds of the episode i was like oh goosebumps the legends going back to their home but then the ep ended. After a really long time an anime gave me the 'I want more' feel. Probably after this episode the rating will go up to 8.70. so yep in conclusion this episode was beautiful. As always the animations and soundtraks were amazing. I liked this new white haired character and I also wanna see that what lena's division is doing. So yep this episode was amazing.

Yeah, Fred is 10. As for her maturity, she mentioned that she was to be the next emperess of the empire, so you can imagine that she was raised to prepare for that role.

seeing them having normal lives and making friends was great. but of course they don't feel quite right doing it. not because they dont deserve to be there but.. well. like frederica said, if they want to let them do it. they were trapped in a cage of oppression, dont trap them in another cage that is pity. also wtf smart kid hello ???? and ah she has powers too.? looking forward to seeing that. and OHH wait just realized, the guy that shien met from the library is going to the military right? so they're probably gonna train together woo :D hope he doesnt die bc i Will cry

I really hope they will explain the whole situation with Frederica, because now it looks like some fantasy shit with foreseeing, not to say about her speech and age (well, maybe she stopped aging for some reason idk). Her monologue in the end sounds cringy.

Episode 2 is actually the first ep I didn't like. Mostly because of Frederica. But it's not bad. Sol parts are mostly nice.

Yeah, because 86 was sooo realistic until this episode right? no fantasy, supernatural and sci-fi elements at all, pure realistic war! hahaha

Pretty Good....

The tension remains, despite the peaceful atmosphere in the city...

A (sort-of madure) Loli... +1

BUT, i feel the series has LOST a very important thing... in the past season the OP/ED always started in the precise moment.... But in this season, so far in this 2 episodes, they are just put anywhere...

I hope the series doesnt lose the Impact in precise moments...

The OP is really great, altho the ED kinda.. meh? not bad but feels less effort versus OP.

the OP also worry me a bit that we wont see Lena again for the majority of this cour. But i dont think its bad, she already has big character development, and become so much mature and has clear focus what she want and can do.
The remaining spearhead squadron is the one now that needs character development since they actually given peace, a reward for their effort, but cant enjoy it.
they actually still had the same suicidal mentality despite not in Republic anymore

Frederica being the last emperor or Glad or w/e kinda burns me out. She looks like she could be 10 right now. How tf could she give an order 10 years ago? Has she stopped aging? Some weird supernatural shit mixed in my scifi.

Being the last emperor/empress doesnt mean she's the one who's actually giving the order. the last empress could also mean all other royal family except her has died before the fall of the empire of Giad and the rise of the Federacy of Giad. so she automatically become the empress no matter how young.

also her talking like that actually adds more to her maturity, she was part of the royal family that start the war, so she kind of feel guilty and also obliged (but powerless) to stop the ongoing war with legion.

11 episodes giving their all to escape from the cruel battlefield just to willingly return to it after a couple of months. Okay.

Honestly, it was a good episode but mostly because of how well it was directed. Sorry but I couldn't help but find the last part with Frederica incredibly ridiculous. Her acting like an imouto is already cringey enough but her acting all serious and mature is even more cringey. Not to mention I'm really not a fan of the new fantasy elements they introduced this episode.

Good episode.

Glad they only used 1 episode for this part since it would feel dragged out if not. They got the feeling right, the feeling that they are not fitting in, pretty impressive!

They also did the nightmare part pretty well, I remember getting a small chill when reading it. Interesting to see their eyes shine blue, I guess that what the blue part of the opening represent.

I don't like the ending really, at least not the beginning of it. Hopefully we get a 2nd ending like Hand on the sky in this season.

I see a lot of people mistakenly think Frederica can see the future or has foresight... it was explicitely said that she can see the past and present. I thought the LN reader were being absolutely condescending saying every critics just lack attention but I'm actually surprised that not a small number got it wrong...

It's almost good enough to make me want to re-watch the first cour which I admit I zoned out several times while watching it due to rather extreme boredom. ALMOST good enough. It is interesting now though. Makes you, or at least me, want to know what will happen next, something I couldn't say for the first cour. First cour I was like: "FINALLY this episode is done, felt like forever." But now I am curious, even if it's just a little, about how these events will continue to unfold.

Man, it's so fucking good. The directing is just *chef's kiss*

The new ED is great and I feel like it really captures the feelings of our Eighty Six this episode. They have experienced a taste of a normal life, but after all they've been through they can't just sit still in peace knowing all the horrors that is happening out there. They are most comfortable at this point in the battlefield. They belong to the battlefield for they are Eighty Six.

Also if you all didn't notice, that Skull Knight book Shin is reading is the same book Rei read to him as a kid and is the inspiration for their personal marks. Shin's dream was really well done and we finally meet my boy Eugene. They finally inevitably returned to the military and with Frederica as well, can't wait for the next episode.

No one said anything about realism, maybe you should read first before replying. Also writing as if fantasy and sci-fi are the same thing is pure stupidity. And no, the show never had fantasy elements and it's supernatural parts were justified (well, sort of) by it's technology.

It is fantasy world either you like it or not . Even Para-RAID is pseudo scientific and based on Shin's family telepathic ability. Even geography or probably Earth itself is different. There are multiple shows which have fantasy elements and scientific elements mixed together like Tower of God , Irregular at high School . Even in FMAB they use alchemy which is Science+magic.

It was shown that her glows red when she uses the power ,but her eyes weren't glowing at that moment so why would you assume that she is using her power.

11 episodes giving their all to escape from the cruel battlefield just to willingly return to it after a couple of months. Okay.

They were escaping from the oppression of Magnolia, not from the battlefield as a whole.
As a bunch of kids, who have spent the majority of their lives fighting and knowing nothing but war, getting a month of peace and moving on would feel out of place, if anything.
Especially considering they had all resigned to the fact that they could die at any moment a long time ago and there is still a war to be fought.

She needs to actively use it to focus on people. So she wasn't using her power at the moment when Shin sneaked on her.

I didn't notice that detail
I'll keep a eye out for it in future episodes

Good episode once again. The first half is the Spearhead Squadron trying to fit into the civilian life but leaving the battlefield is not easy. But they got the freedom to chose their own destinies.Hopefully by the end they will have a future to look forward after the war.

The Vánagandrs marching through the street was pretty majestic to see.I wish could have piloted those.

We got to see Frederica's backstory and her powers. She is going to join the squad now.

Now looking forward towards the next episode.

Something is just off about Ernst and Frederica but I just cannot put my finger on it. Imma just wait and see though, otherwise very chill episode and even within a chill episode the presence of the deeper themes is strong. (such as a soldier being unable to leave a war behind.)

I'm an avid light novel reader of this series and I have loved it since the very beginning. This episode is really an important foundation and set up for what's to come in the future and I am definitely looking forward to it and really appreciate what the production team is trying to accomplish....
However, something about this episode just really distracted me away from all the wonderful things happening throughout and that is the awful animation quality.

This is by far the worst animated episode of since season 1 of 86 and I am really disappointed. As a light novel reader, it is certainly like a dream to watch everything play out and come alive, the animation quality in this episode just did not deliver at all and I hope this trend won't continue in future episodes as this series deserves so much better. I appreciate the animators and know it's all hard work, but these are all my honest opinion.

Let me know what do y'all think about the animation quality in this episode, maybe I'm the only one.
Lets be nice :)

I agree that this episode doesn't have that same visual quality as the others but to be fair, there was no action in this episode and it was mostly just them roaming around, trying to fit in with society early on and then decide after everything to return to the battlefield. So, I don't mind the animators putting a little less effort visually in an episode like this compared to an action episode where the animation has to be on top of its game there. The directing otherwise still was fairly decent in this episode, particularly with the Kaie scene which I liked a lot here.

Another great episode. Nice to see a little more detail on what the other four were up to during this month since IIRC this chapter of the LN mostly focused on Shin. Also Eugene's sister is an adorable little cinnamon roll.
