My parents when i was a kid were really lax on what i did online so long as it was legal but i wasn't really involved in any online community at all until i became an adult out of boredom from a pandemic. But how much should a child be monitored online by their caregiver?

I guess it depends on the kid and the age. If they spend time online at the age of however old they may be-11 or somewhere around that range, they should definitely get a few check ins here and there for pretty obvious reasons

But I do think that no matter the age, getting monitored/watched 24/7 doesn't sound ideal so I think the child should still have at least more than 1% freedom

Exactly, I think trust is the first step of a good relationship with your kid, you should prevent what are the dangers before, and monitor sometimes. Of course, under a certain age like 8-9, you should control the kid's internet using, you choose the videos, you watch with him, you check the sites where he goes...

i think that the most important thing is checking on the virtual interactions as they could be potentially harmful.
i grew up without any sort of monitoring since my mom worked 24/7, with that freedom i visited a whole lot of crazy shit that i shouldnt have visited, but i grew up just fine because my experience in the web didnt override my values.
if i had the opportunity to contact a troubled individual that experience wouldnt be the same since that individual could have manipulated me into something worse

i personally think a parent should be more attentive and monitor a child's online activities at least to make sure they're not getting themselves involved in something wrong or illegal. i feel like sexual content should be excused though... hahaha because its natural for teenagers. ofc even that should be monitored if its a younger child. this is a dream life lmfao. i wouldn't want my parents putting some tracker or something in my computer though. 👀 i'm still paranoid about whether or not they can ask the internet provider for my incognito history.

I would not monitor them at all, just try to give them some basic guidance.

If they do something stupid without asking me, then I hope they learn from it. For best results, survival of the fittest, individualism, moral relativism, and consequentialism must be taught from a very young age. If you follow the rules given by the government or the school, your child will merely become another employee with no future.

I'd probably limit restriction my kid a bit, until he's 10, and once he's 10 I'd let him roam free. By the time he's 10 he would have hopefully developed other hobbies, so that he isn't staring at a blue screen the whole time, it'd be bad if my kid turned out like me.
