So there's been a lot of "JJK is hated and Generic" threads so I figured let's make a thread about what we found interesting or non-standard about JJK.

I liked "explaining your power".
It's a common shonen trope but JJK turns it into a layered mechanic.
HxH has done this before as requirements for activating an ability, but in JJK anyone can do it for a power boost.
The strategy's validity changes depending on your cursed technique and your enemy's.
Some abilities it doesn't matter if you explain them because your enemy can't do anything about it, like Todo's Boogie Woogie.
Some are easier to counter, like Nanami's 7-3.

There's also the strategy of misleading your opponent with incomplete information.
Todo left out key details when disclosing his technique to Hanami which allowed him to beat the shit out of it.
Or when Eso says "you guys will die in 10 minutes from my poison blood" only to think to himself "they'll actually die even faster because I explained my technique."

The above average Shounen Jump manga is already more appealing to most people than your average LN isekai with OP protagonist and pseudo harem, let alone the countless one cour slice of life/ rom-com series with waifu bait, original sports or game adaptations.

Add badass characters and great production, voilá, you got an anime smoking 95% of what's coming out.

Above average animation, mediocre and below mediocre in terms of story and power level system(even the explanation), great entertaining fights, and there are some really funny moments (especially Miwa).

Nothing for me. It was just good in all aspects (except soundtrack imo, I didn't like it) and it all added up to a solid 7/10.

Nothing really for me it’s solid and I loved the animation, I didn’t particularly care about any of the characters or got invested in the plot but it’s a solid foundation for future seasons. 6/10 IMO

Thanks for the responses.
Though I would prefer if there were more specific examples.
Like how Yuji had to clarify his goal in episode 2 wasn't just "because my grandpa told me to" or how Sukuna's actually evil.

Great animation, well written characters. It follows the same style as most shonen but perfects it in a way that I think makes it stand above most others.

Fun characters, I really liked the comedy (especially in juju stroll at the end of each episode), the animation, the fast-pacedness and explaining of the power is always good in my books. Not too much talk-no-Jutsu either.

Aside from the over the top animation, wait yea it stands out already sure, but aside from that the characters are very likeable, its one of the animes that i would find a single character hate, i like them all, even the villians but especially the sorcerers as well, aside from the mad action that its been bought to us in midst of all of that i can find myself laughing in the humours the had bought, great plot great animation, great characters, great openings, a great anime, it stand out simply because its great

Oh yeah love the irony. From Mahito who literally plays with lives to Choso who received news of death.
It's nice to see the villains know how to have fun. You see them playing football, hanging in hot springs, and tanning on the beach.

Overall: badass characters for the most part with fun interactions between them, antagonists that are actual villains, interesting powers and how they’re used in fights, no downtime inbetween arcs for training or boring events that we’ve seen done a thousand times in shounen stories.

Anime - great adaptation of the source material that also elevated some dull moments from the manga, solid art and CD as well as clean animation.

Manga - some of/if not the best fight choreography in shounen being published right now but also in recent memory, great use of panels.

Nothing. The plot is basic, the characters especially the main trio is just fucking bad written and don't even feel like characters more like side characters who are there to just create comedy. The only reason that I can think of is that it had good looking characters that's all nothing else

I think season 1 is good, and not generic, but also not super unique. Shibuya and beyond definitely prove its nowhere near generic and pretty great.

it didn’t really stand out to me to be honest, I didn’t really like the story/characters/humor personally so maybe that just really killed it for me, I do love a lot of shonen though I just couldn’t get into this one.

Great animation, fight choreography, power system, plot, characters and villains. Plus a great soundtrack.

To be honest out of all of the new generation Shonen series out there, this series stands out for me.

Joining in what most people are saying, its the fun and badass characters, evil villains, power system, humor (this is subjective), music and of course the insanely high production values. These are all the ingredients to a recipe for a successful and popular battle shonen.

There's also the way the series plays around with some common shonen tropes like the "explaining your power thing" as well as the inner demon inside the MC actually being completely evil.

Its not reinventing the battle shonen formula but its execution of what makes shonen good and popular is damn near perfect.

So you're in the same boat as me lol.Even I love the way they explain their powers as it is an integral part of the world building in JJK.
I think saying "It's only known for animation" has become a trend now after Demon slayer released when I love other aspects other than animation like how the characters use their brains to defeat the villains plus villains are supposed to be hateable but they made Sukuna really fun lol.

It's not that there is much that makes it so special, decently written likable characters, Overall good pacing. The power systems and abilities are part of the show but I think the things listed above are of at least equal importance bc if both arent good then the show is bad, cool powers with shitty plot and characters that is paced to slow, people will be interested but they will turn away if important stuff like that is bad, and vice versa a shonen with good characters and bad power systems will make for boring fights so it couldn't be considered a shonen so the reason people like it is for the most part it is simply done right, Also ps I'm still a bit high so sorry if this is a bit hard to understand

People who call it generic have to understand that this is the start. Look at Hunter x Hunter. Almost everybody who finished it agrees that it isn't generic. What we have watched in the anime is just the equivalent to hxh first 20 episodes. The next two arcs to be animated are really better, the fist because it shows that Gojo is more than an OP character that is there just for making money and because it shows who is Suguru Geto, and the second (Shibuya) because it is a culmination of all the things setled in previous arcs. If the manga continues at the same level for a couple of arcs I would consider it a solid 9/10.
