Is watching too much anime a waste of time?

I've watched about 1610 anime, but I am still adding anime to MAL since I've only joined this site on February 26th 2021 (so there's a lot more).

At this point I've realized that the majority of anime I've watched was probably a waste of time (pretty late to realize that huh?).
Sure watching anime is fun and all and there are certain things you learn from it (Japanese, history, culture...), but it shouldn't get out of hand. I could have invested my time in exercising, learning new stuff, school etc...
We did have the whole lockdown thing, so there was a lot of free time, but really try to keep yourself from watching too much anime. I mean if it's your only hobby I won't refrain you from watching it (I can't do that either way lol), but try to set a certain limit for yourself and spend more time doing healthy stuff (it's worth it!).

Let me know what you think about this.

idk, I have 1,667.5 days of watch time according to MAL.
But is it really a waste of time if I enjoy it? I personally enjoy my time watching anime so yeah, it's a No for me.

I wasted all my time in rewatching to the point of my rewatch total is higher than my overall anime total lmao

Damn dude, you're old as fuck.

Anime is the only form of entertainment I can consume so I don't find it a waste of time.

Yo that's actually a joke. I'm not 91 lmao.

That's great that you enjoy it. I'm just trying to warn some people so that they don't end up with regret, you feel me?

Probably everything we do in our life is a waste of time, so I don't think we need to worry if watching anime is a wasting time or not. Is doing things you like a waste of time? Could be.

it's only subjective and everyone should answer this question themselfs, I have no right to tell someone "stop watching anime this is a waste of time!!!"

Well it's not a waste of time if you enjoy it, I can agree to that. But if you compare it to doing more "useful" stuff (work, keeping your body healthy, socializing etc...), I'd say in majority (some anime are masterpieces you just have to watch) it's a waste of time.

Yessir, I agree. That's why I said that I won't refrain anyone from watching anime (I don't even have the right to do that). It's just some advice for people that watch anime, but don't really enjoy it as much anymore.

I mean, you can do both if you like.
I see anime as a hobby, not something I'd do 24/7. I also have a life outside, I go to the gym every week, and I hang out with my friends to watch movies in theaters.

And there's no definition of "useful" stuff since it's subjective. For example, Anitubers literally have to watch anime because it's their job, for them it's their source of money and it's useful (at least I think so).
And outside of anime, there are chess GMs that dedicates their life to chess which isn't exactly the most "useful" thing in the world, but it's their job and they like it. The same can be said with every sport. idk, that's just my take. Feel free to disagree.

Yes I do agree that you can combine both anime and your normal life.
I think @aniwtchr11 explained it really well.
To quote him: "I think anime could be a waste of time if it disrupts the more important aspects of your life or if it becomes a chore. You know, if you feel that procrastination guilt, it probably means you're wasting your time."
That's what I mean with "useful" stuff (the important aspects of life).

Anitubers do indeed do this as a job, thus I'd see it as "useful". But for sure "useful" is only subjective.
There are some things we can agree on that are useful tho: job, sport etc...

Watching anime is not a waste of time.

But it's a break, a moment to relax and enjoy. It's not (or at least it shouldn't be) your main activity. If you're making it your main activity, then you're doing it wrong.

Asking whether anime is a waste of time is like asking whether drinking beer is problematic... well, it depends on how much you drink.

You are right. I did put "too much" in the title, so we're on the same page here that it has to do with quantity.

I only started watching anime around last year March but it did become a waste of time when I'd rather watch anime than actually study. But since I asked myself 'is anime really that important?' I stopped watching as much, almost stopped completely. Still trying to finish hunter x hunter tho, but the chimera ant arc's a drag.
Even though it may be a waste sometimes, watching dubs help because you can multitask.
*also you have to take into account enjoyment. Watching anime made me significantly happier, did push back my focus on school but still aha

Yes its far too much. But it depends on how long you have been doing it for...

I have just cracked 200 days, the vast majority of which has been completed in the past 2 years... and I realise it to be an addiction. I bargain with myself and agree to keep smashing it until I complete my PTW list... only for it to permanently be 2000 episodes away from completion.

So I'm engaging a new strategem - to keep avg mins/day <120. That way I can keep adding and watching however much I want but I can only watch at a max rate of 5 episodes/day.

Everything in moderation is a good thing.

Watching subs is actually a great method of learning Japanese as well. I am currently learning Japanese and it has certainly helped me that I already kinda know the fundamentals of Japanese by watching sub.

You don't necessarily have to watch anime without subtitles. I'd recommend starting with subtitles and when you further improve you Japanese, you can start dropping the subtitles.

Hobbies can give all kinds of things in person's life.. Emotions, learning new things.. I personally also enjoy seeing all kinds of characters, with all kinds of thinking and feeling, different perspectives.. So for me anime - is very meaningful time.. But it doesn't have to be as this for everyone, really.. It can be this, it can be waste of time, it can be getting something else from this.. Different people like different things..

I'd say it depends on which anime you watch. There aren't that many good anime out there and lately for example, I've been running into a lot of overrated anime (Darling in the FranXX and Kaguya-sama Love is War being among them) and I can say without any doubt that those are wastes of time.

Now if you would actually enjoy watching an anime, that doesn't fall into wasting your time. Enjoyment is most important to me, so if I have to complete an anime for a challenge for example and I hate said anime, I will curse it to hell and back and probably drop it too.

You do have to do other hobbies too, pick up a book once in a while, go sight-seeing in the mountains, anything.

Yes, enjoyment is a big factor in establishing whether it's a waste of time or not. Quantity plays a big role as well. If it disrupts your normal life or overrules your other activities throughout a day, it could be considered as a waste of time even if you enjoy watching the anime. Because let's be honest here, there are more important things in life than anime.

Yes, exactly. I've only recently (December 2020) re-started watching anime and I've been limiting it to "you can only watch anime from 8 pm to 11 pm, when you have to go to sleep" and it's been working for me. Otherwise, I have to study for uni, read books, listen to music non-stop like usual and go on walks once in a while. If it weren't for the pandemic and I were to move back to the city, I would go out more too, but I don't like clubs so I would go for concerts or hanging out with friends in LGB friendly bars.

Indeed, I think anything that's entertainment and takes up a lot of your time is not okay, unless that's your job, like idk movie critic or having to watch a lot of theater because you want to be an actor? You get the idea. Maybe you could play video games a bit more if you also want to learn how to create them.

The "you can only watch anime from 8 pm to 11pm" is a great way of having control over how much anime you consume a day. Keep it up ;)

I mean the upfront answer would be yes.
You said "too much" not a lot, and in my opinion too much of anything is just not good.
Obviously, then comes the question, what counts as "too" much anime? That differs per person but in general once it starts affecting your priorities or eating away from work/school/etc time then yes it's probably time to tone it down.

In my opinion, if you watch anime when you know there are obligations that haven't been completed, then it's a waste of time. But if it's done after your obligation has been completed, then it's not a waste of time

When you really want to relax and have no assignments, you can watch anime, Humans need a lot of entertainment. That's normal.

"Too much of anything" is indeed not good. I think watching anime more than 400 days consecutively (like MAL indicates) is not healthy in any kind of way, unless you're like 60+ or something and when you've been watching anime for your whole life.
You're right there is no general limit on anime, since it's subjective, but it should be healthy even though it's enjoyable.

Don't let the past get you down, we can't change what's already happened. Besides you probably enjoyed and had a good time watching a lot of those series. Just put the bad part about it behind you and cherish it as a time in your life where you got to relax and watch some really good shows.

how long did you spend accumulating 1600+ anime completed? i usually binge watch, so that on days when i don't have any time to watch anime i'm not on cliffhangers or anything. i think watching shows over a longer period of time is better though, as it means you aren't spending too much time on anime.

I started watching anime in 2004. In the beginning I was like a freak and finished about 4 shows a week, depending on the amount of episodes. So yeah eventually that got up to 1600 (but there are still anime I have to add so I'd estimate that the actual number is around 2200 or something like that)

oh, well that makes more sense then. if you started back in 2004 then i wouldn't say the amount of anime you've watched is unhealthy, because it's been spread out over a long period of time.

No duh watching anime is a waste of time but isn’t that the point. It’s a form of entertainment you enjoy to waste your time. But it’s worth the time IMO. Plus rn there nothing to do since everything closed down.

Overdoing something is always bad, at least I function that way. Watching the amount of anime you have would also be pretty impossible for me (well maybe in ten more years or so), since over time I became more and more picky about the things I watch in my free time and get invested in.

However, for me its pretty hard to define what kind of show I would define as a "waste of time", especially when judging it from a more reflected point of view. If I watched a show that, when looking bad on, seems like a waste of time, but I just watched it passively after a hard day I would hardly say it was a waste of time.

I mean, anything can be bad or a waste of time if you're just doing it for the sake of doing it or in lue of your responsibilities. But as someone who has seen, far less than you, but my own fair share of anime I feel like it's only really a waste of time if you are no longer enjoying it, which is not something I can say so far. It depends on the person don't get me wrong but I just don't see myself slowing down anytime soon honestly.

If you are having fun with something I do not consider it a waste of time though you should make sure you have enough income to pay for living expenses at minimum.

Can I ask how do u have a lot of total anime watched and how old are u?

I'm 35 right now and I've basically been watching anime since 2004 like a freak. I'd finish about 4 shows a week, depending on the amount of episodes. This eventually got up to 1600+ anime (there are still anime I have to add to MAL, so I'd estimate my total watched anime to be around 2200).

If you're a weeaboo, change.

Ok. Back to your question, no. Watching too much anime is never a waste of time. I started watching anime seriously 4 years ago and I'm enjoying most of them. Nearly 600 total anime watched rn. I don't think im gonna quit anime in the future.
