Hmm that depends on the phone I would think.
If you have an iphone or even an ipad then dns black-holing is yeah the way to go...

But if you have an android then you can easily edit the host file or use an app that adds multiple lines to the hostfile to block known ad offenders, or even manually block your own.
Obviously the host file way is the more powerful solution... just depends on what you have access to depending on your phone and mobile OS and if you want it to be automagic, manual, or a combo of the two.

I have no idea if iOS has the ability to block via host file yet, but I have tested the ability to block via dns and it works quite well :D

xda forums for android, and jailbreak reddit for forums have been my beginning bread and butter for mobile solutions...and of course google for everything else.

Ill look into the NextDNS too in my free time on the ipad air

my parents and brother are using their smartphones right now and they say they do not see ads much other than on youtube though

so AdBlocking on the DNS level i reckon is similar to a host file adblocking but ye i think host file adblocking is still better but adding the NextDNS to the wireless router we have is more easy though

Chrome as primary browser, Firefox as secondary. I assume this is the case for majority.

None other than the one and only Firefox. Reasoning? I do not feel like letting Google in on my hot pictures and sayings.

Instead all of your DNS queries are by default sent to DNS servers operated by Cloudflare. Better than sending it to your ISP but you may want to disable that setting when you're using a trusted VPN.

uBlock Origin is lite on resources though and i tick the "ignore generic cosmetic filters" option too

but i will take a look more on that NextDNS stuff you mention

alright im using NextDNS now on the wireless router so that even the smartphones of my parents and brother will have no ads that way

NextDNS servers
45.90.28.40
45.90.30.40

and i uninstalled uBlock Origin now too

i will try NextDNS again if its working well. i use AdGuard currently but i think its their beta servers
176.103.130.130
176.103.130.131
because the setup guide has different addresses https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/overview.html#instruction

btw NextDNS gives different servers for some people so mine aren't the same as yours i see...

for youtube, i use vanced.app but it can be tricky to set up without small issues on some phones

Waterfox, which is a Firefox fork that supports old extensions. Though i must really invest into migrating to something better.

Fuck Chrome - it is Google's (quite successful) project to take over the web through dictating how the end users interact with websites. Chromium forks (Opera , Brave, Vivaldi etc.) are no better because they still depend on Google's code base in the end. Their constant push for implementing new technologies into web browser is quite exhausting, to the point where it is beginning to lose very basic functionality. For example, last time i tried it, if a web page has too many GIF images that take some time to load, Chromium-based browsers will just cut the connection after a while, failing to load half of images.

For those concerned with their privacy while browsing the internet, i recommend this article as a good breakdown on what data web browser vendors collect from it's users:

actually nevermind that's a decent one for start. but I'd still recommend looking at privacytools after.

The problem i see with privacytools is that it just provides a visitor a list and says 'use this for privacy', without doing much explanation about how exactly it would benefit user compared to using other tools. Spyware Watchdog, on the other hand, provides factual data about software behavior that violates user privacy. I think the latter is more important in raising awareness about predatory practices of software companies.
