Back when I was a kid I basically just watched anime on TV.
I didn't especially pick which anime to watch, but rather pick the channels that air all the Japanese anime together and watch whatever that peaks my interest.

Now I think back about it, I have stumbled upon some pretty dark / super dramatic anime without knowing it, yet follow them faithfully.

Here's a few I can think of:

Kodomo no Omocha: An anime involves with topic of serious bullying, broken family, child with desire to suicide, parents who abandoned their kid at birth, serious love drama, etc.

Fushigi Yuugi: A pretty dark isekai romance genre. There's one female cast who implied being raped and hold a deep grudge toward female mc There're some brutal death on many important main casts.

Hunter x Hunter (1998): Somehow the 1998 version is way more gorely / violent than the new reboot Hunter Hunter lol.. I remember Killua disassemble people/ holding heart being extremely explicit in the old version.

Fullmetal Alchemist (2004): Edward-nichan, let's play....

Parasite: Not anime, but rather manga I watched at a dentist bookcase. Somehow I finished all the volumes :P

Jigoku Sensei Nube: Somehow a lot Japanese yokai folklore in this anime is executed in a very disturbing way. Surprisingly dark. Many kids actually nearly got chopped into pieces or die.

While the FOX Kids airing didn't do it justice, Escaflowne got into some real shit at a certain point.

Digimon, particularly the Diaboromon movie. I had a better understanding of the series.
The 3rd Pokemon movie also feels very different now that I’m an adult.

Pokemon was quite dark. Especially the Mewtwo movie.

Ah you beat me to it. I didn't even know what happening; just recall being confused constantly.

I still wouldn't consider Tokyo Ghoul a particularity great (or really even good) series, but man does that show know how to do a good job building up atmosphere. I honestly still get chills just thinking about certain scenes

I remember being creeped out by Cell but not really understanding he was drinking entire cities worth of people. I watched it so many times I eventually got it though.

The plot of Andromeda Stories freaked me out as a kid:

But for not as obvious examples, the Toei version of 2 Years Vacation movie. The tension between kids, the racism towards the black kid, the ruthless adult mutineers, the killings would make today's parents and TV editors foam.

I didn't understand why robot could bleed in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
I also didn't know that Cardcaptor Sakura was full of LGBT characters (okay, it's not dark but that issue is controversial at least in my country).

But because the Slave is in that despairing situation, having nothing, it can kill the Emperor !"

Digimon Tamers is really fucked up. But I think I did realize how dark it was since it scared the shit out of me.

This anime scared me when I was a kid.

The series I didn't realize was dark is probably Honey Bee Hutch. I found it kind of sad, and felt more frustrated over how Hutch never met his mom (the premise of the show is him getting separated from his mom and is looking for her). But the induvidual stories are dark and the way the insects died also cruel.

AOT for me too, but I think that even as a kid I knew how dark it was. So that was kind of my main reason for watching it.

mirai nikki was already pretty gory and kind of a fucked up story but the more i think about some of the characters and their circumstances it just seems pretty unsettling

To me Mirai Nikki is like tryhard edgy type of trash XD
I wouldn't call that dark.

Yes I'm aware there's literally a woman who willingly got raped constantly because why the hell not.
I'm also aware most of the characters in the series are irrational/ psycho.

Hi no Tori 2772: Ai no CosmoZone went a bit dark, a bit sexy ( + almost incestal) and a bit nihilistic after certain point...and the release was meant for kids, it even had singing anthropomorphic animals.

Digimon Tamers. I was surprised upon learning the fact that it's written by Konaka. Watched it again few years ago and it became one of my favorites.
