If you're someone who does a little or even a fair bit of checking up on the anime in advance, which was the one or ones you were most surprised at disliking the actual final product of after reading a plot synopsis or overview, reviews and recommendations, confirming the genres listed and age of production and animation and art style were all to your liking? Were there any anime like this in which every detail you might have researched in advance looked excellent on paper, but you just didn't connect or were massively disappointed with the end result of the actual anime for some unforeseen reason? Why? Please discuss in the thread which will be created by your own posts. You can only mention one or you can mention as many as you choose.

I don't do that much research, but based on reputation I really thought I'd like Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, but it was just..laughable tbh. So many plotholes and ridiculous execution of some scenes. As the series progressed I just couldn't take it seriously anymore, even though I'm not the fussy type. Still don't see the appeal.

Baccano! for sure. Not that i particularly disliked it but it was surely a disappointment. Still can't remember the names of half of the supposed well-written cast. Fate/Zero, but this was because i had incredibly high expectations since people keep saying that it was a masterpiece and even better than Fate/Stay night, but trust me, it wasn't.

I’d say for me it’s definitely Perfect Blue. I love psychological stuff, especially if they’re disturbing. The synopsis of Perfect Blue was exactly what I had been looking for. An idol who can’t tell apart reality from fantasy? Which one is the real her? Sounds right up my alley. Not only was I engrossed in that synopsis, the movie was highly praised by the anime community so I was looking forward to it. When I finished the film I was somewhat disappointed.... I tried to like it, I really did, because it sounded like something I would definitely enjoy but it wasn’t possible for me. The whole movie was very boring to me, it felt like nothing was happening and when I finally felt like something was happening, the movie ended.

Konosuba I read alot of prais for this one. Yet, i am unable to finish the first episode. The voice actor for the mc isn't helping either.

Overlord - S1 was pretty good, S2 was kinda iffy but okay, S3 was nothing short of audience trolling. If they make more seasons I don't plan to watch them. Also FLCL - I knew beforehand that it was different, but by the end I was like, WTF?, that made no sense.

Couple of them actually: Re:Zero - it became quite boring after just 3 or 4 episodes. Too bad, it had one of the greatest episode 1 I've ever seen. Konosuba - the parody that managed to make me laugh exactly zero times. Spirited Away - no I didn't watch it as kid nor I think that everything that Ghibli does is out of these world, so I didn't rate it higher than the score that I think it actually deserves.

Magia record-I thought the madoka magica spin off would at least be able to decently capture my attention, but i ended up dropping it because i was progressively growing more uninterested as the show went on. Haruhi-I didn´t expect Haruhi to be this annoying,so I dropped it because there was no way I could watch a show entirely revolved around her. Tsuritama-I don´t actually hate this anime but the fishing part bores me too much for me to want to keep on watching.I expected this anime to have something else that at least captured my interest a little bit more. You'd think an anime about aliens and fishing would be a little bit more crazy

Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength. |

Parasyte the Maxim looked excellent on paper and was highly praised by anyone for the 'deep' philosophical themes, but after episode 10 it just got incredibly boring, main characters personality disappeared (plot reasons i know but STILL), the themes of it arent deep, incredibly bland and predictable and the only reason why i finished it was pure spite.

Zankyou no Terror seemed really promising and the first couple of episodes were great, but the show went downhill after that too fast. Dororo was the same. It was really good up until episode 8ish but it got so bad so fast I had to drop it after a few episodes. Kill la Kill too. I was surprised that a highly praised and recommended show turned out like that. It had some good moments but overall I was highly disappointed.

Probably Serial Experiments Lain. I like the concept and themes around it mixing a lot of psychological elements too. But that was the problem; it was too focused on being such a mindfuck that it made it so difficult to keep up and follow. So when I finished it I just felt so hollow. Like I didn't understand what it ended going for. That may sound like it's a fault of mine, but I have enjoyed other anime with mindfuckery involved, but SEL went off the deep end for me.

Serial Experiments Lain for me. It wasn't too bad but at the same time it wasn't too much of anything. When I initially researched it it sounded really interesting and had a kind of strong start until it just felt like nothing was progressing. Maybe I'm not enough of an 'intellect' to understand it, but just my opinion after all.

I'd say One Punch Man S2. The comedy is still pretty good, but it just lost something I can't quite point my finger at. I don't know what it is, but that thing that's missing just made me drop it after the 4th episode, and I'm not interested in watching the rest of it. It just didn't have the essence S1 had.

| JoJo Phantom Blood was good and Battle Tendency amazing so I had super high expectations for Stardust Crusaders. I kept telling myself it must have a slow start and things are gonna get interesting next episode but yeah no. | No. 6 I wanted to like it. I really did. Practically every review I'd read/seen for it had given it a 9 or 10, irl friends recommended it to me. The first 2 or 3 episodes drew me in a little, but it quickly faded from there. It just came off really boring and unsure of what to do with its story and setting, and then completely changed directions at the last minute. And the main 2 characters seemed to have the exact same argument every episode for the entire show, and didn't even seem to like each other when they were supposed to have such great chemistry. I just. Really don't get it. |

I really, for a long time, thought I would adore Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi (Sunday Without God). The premise seemed cool, animation was gorgeous and I like a lot of adventure-esque shows. I just really disliked the MC so bad that I nearly dropped it. Another example is also Shion no Ou. It started out fantastic with a psychological twists and I love these types of shows, but as it progressed it was nothing short of disappointing.

Cowboy Bebop - heard a lot of praise from everywhere, while also being interested in anime that wasn't based on manga, but I was put off by it's episodic nature. Same with Samurai Champloo, though I liked it a bit more Death Note - haven't researched anything, but you know the praise the show gets, I was digging the first half - Light's descent into madness, his romantic relationship with L, second half wasn't my cup of tea.

Not so surprised but OPM s1 was the most overrated anime I've ever seen. The comedy is horrible, the vast majority of characters are annoying and the parody is not very good to say. Take out the good animation and nobody would have paid attention to it. I tried to laugh but it gave me cringe every moment I tried. Cowboy Bebop too but at least the writing is much better but is not a masterpiece as many say.

There weren't many, I usually am lucky and pick mostly things I can enjoy, some more, some less - but the three shows I know surprised me by failing to hook me when I was expecting them to - based on summary, genres, topics, but most importantly friends recommendations: Mushishi, I wish I could at least like it but man, while interesting, it is soooooo slow, puts me to sleep - Attack on Titan, that one still baffles me, struggled through 5 episodes, don't know if I can ever finish it and most recently Tower of God. Would be right up my alley, don't know what happened there, dropped it after 3 episodes. Now there are plenty i wasn't sure about and dropped them after one or more episodes, or maybe liked them enough to finish them - but these 3 especially sounded perfect for me on paper, but just weren't for whatever reason.

Code Geass for sure. After watching Death Note,I was suggested to watch Code Geass because of mind and psychological battles. But I ended up watching a jumbled mess.I have never seem an anime which tries to combine every genre and fails miserably at it.The SOL and comedy bits were unnecessary and fall flat. There is no explanation on the working of Geass. Unbearable and stupid characters that make you beat them with a stick.Plot twists that are pulled out of nowhere and are forced."Gotcha You didn't expect this shit".I hated every single aspect of that show.

Hunter X Hunter. I didn't do any research past the synopsis or seeing channels on YouTube talk about it. But I knew there was lots of hype around it. Friends said it was great too. I tried watching it twice but it never clicked. First time I made it around 6 episodes in. 15+ eps the second time. Nothing was standing out or grabbing my interest. At that point I stopped because I wasn't enjoying it.

For me it has to be Bleach. I didn’t had super high expectacions on it but still expected it to ge a good Shonen. The start was kinda slow and boring but then Soul Society arc kicked in which was a masterpiece, But everything after that was rollercoster ride, even if I forget about all those embarrasing and long fillers there were still quite a few things that I didn’t like that much mostly the final arc that I forgot how its named but it spanned from episode 343 till 366 . So yeah I was a little dissapointed at Bleach and that I really couldn’t like it enought to give it an 8

Has to be Bunny girl senpai. Two of my friends who are Oregairu fans highly recommended this, and I came across multiple posts online comparing the characters of the two shows. On top of that, the supernatural element in the first few episodes very vaguely reminded me of Kimi no na wa. Oregairu and Kimi no na wa are my two favourites in anime. So I thought I was in for something special. It ended up being one of the most frustrating things I've watched recently.

I'm a person who usual enjoys harem anime. I know they can be trashy and lowbrow but I find them to be a lot of fun to watch. So imagine my surprise when out right hated Rosario + Vampire. That show is bad by harem anime standards. All the characters are bland and uninteresting the only character I even slightly liked was Kurumu. Also it didn't help that the show kept recycling the same jokes EVERY SINGLE EPISODE! Seriously you've seen one episode of that show you've seen them all. I managed to get to episode nine before dropping the show and usually I try to finish every show I watch. The show is just boring and repetitive.

I'd have to say Youjo Senki I loved the premise, as it's unique for an isekai, and it's a setting anime rarely explores, being a world war inspired setting Problem is, Tanya is rarely, if ever published for the awful acts she commits, at least in the first season and movie, and the show expects us to be on her side. At least with something like Death Note, the show acknowledged that Light was in the wrong

Vinland Saga. I really like Viking's history and stuff. When I read the synopsis, I thought it would be such a fun ride to watch this series. Unfortunately, the best part for me was a flashback from the main character. After that, I tried my best to enjoy it, but I just got frustrated instead.

Boku no Hero Academia I usually enjoy popular shonen series, so I expected to like this one to some degree, but nope. Everything just felt flat for me. Deku is a mediocre MC, the only ones that caught the little bit of my interest was Aizawa and Shoto. But the nail in the coffin was Bakugo, I hated his guts and I still do. I barely rated it a 7 so still on the fence about whether I should continue with S2 and S3.
