| THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- For its first hour way too reminiscent of the first movie only with Lum and Ataru's positions reversed and with weaker humor, banal plotting, worse pacing, and inferior new characters. The last half-hour is better. Repeating the game of tag that brought Lum and Ataru together only this time focused on their relationship is a neat book-end and reversal; usually it's Lum chasing Ataru, and while the first tag game resolved in a misunderstanding of Ataru's feeling over what he said, this second resolves in a correct understanding of his feelings despite what he didn't say. The way the instability in their relationship is finally brought to a head is also a decent way to do a supposedly "final" story, although that's not true in fact nor spirit. I just wish the transition between these two distinct parts of the film was better handled. It's almost as if the first part was being played as a typical Urusei Yatsura adventure then it unexpectedly discarded that and suddenly became seriously about Ataru and Lum. Such intentionally jarring plotting would have worked fine, but it's not really what's going on. The plot device of the fake Lum which is so important to setting off the second phase of the story is too dumb to abide and it would probably have needed to more overtly drop the plot it spent so much time on. As it is, Rupa's grandfather suddenly talks about cancelling the wedding for no apparent reason. |

| Pretty nice movie with a nice ending I must say! Definitely better than the previous movie I must say. In general the pacing was a bit slow, but well it was still pretty good! Up to the last movie! |

IMO I think that it would have been more interesting if Rupa and Carla had resolved their situation after Ataru and Lum, to show that after looking at Ataru and Lum's struggles and how it was finally resolved, they would admit their true feeelings for each other. The way Rupa and Carla got together felt "lacking"( though it was cute when Rupa said to Carla to be his bride)because they were part of the reason Ataru and Lum separated, so they should have at least, in a way, taken some responsibility to help fix it! Overall, I did enjoy the climax of the film, when Ataru was still holding onto Lum's old horns, and reminding himself that he'll never forget his time with Lum <3 Their embrace was beautiful too :3 |
| Pretty good end of the series. The scene with Ataru having flashbacks with all the moments with Lum, really put a tear to my eye. Let me feel they really love each other even though they are too stubborn sometimes to admit it. Too bad we didn't hear the three most important words directly from Ataru: "I Love you!" |

| Great movie but I feel trolled, I wanted to know if ryuunosuke managed to wear a girl sailor school uniform or about ton-chan, asuka etc. At leat we saw inaba there with shinobu. All in all, I loved it, ataru didn't say the words but probably will say it in the future. End of urusei yatsura for me as I watched all of it. Those were some fun times. |

| He didn't say it, but that was better of course. If he had, it would have seemed forced. Ended the best possible. So this is the end yet not end? Everyone was there, it seemed, though a lot's left hanging. Not great as an end but it's not really one anyway. Kind of weird to hear Inoue You (original Ran) as Carla having a brief conversation with Ran with the new seiyuu. |

| Idk what to feel about the artstyle shift. Not that it's a big deal. Loved the conclusion. Even though for the anime at least this isn't really the end. Way better movie than the last two ones. And it’s a way better ending than episode 195 (tho I loved it for its kiss scene). I loved that this movie (at least the latter half) gave Ataru and Lum development. You can tell they're very different people compared to their episode 1 counterparts. I really don't understand Inaba's part. Someone said watching OVA3 before this was important but all he did was point out the memory wipe machine. Even Ryuunosuke at the very least got a gag scene with her father even if she was of no importance to the premise of the film. |

| It's far better than I remember when the last time I watch it. I think it's very fitting with the open ending like this by not following traditional happy ending. I love how its climax panning from Ataru's home all the way to their school. Ataru might be a stubborn jerk but I find him to be a genuinely great character. It has been such a ride of hilarity all the way through with these crazy characters and their shenanigan. |

| Way better than I remember it from my first watch. But the movie does have some issues. Like Carla and Rupa. I liked their characters a lot more on my 2nd watch but their reconciliation at the end of the movie and Rupa's great-grandfather randomly annulling the marriage felt too fast-paced. I guess this was inevitable considering this movie adapts 11 chapters. The only canon Urusei Yatsura movie. But it isn't as bad as Inuyasha Final Act's early episodes. Small things like this did ruin my enjoyment of the movie a bit. Like Inaba and the other side characters basically doing nothing. But it's also funny now to notice that Rumiko's characters dooming their children by setting up their arranged marriages originated before Ranma 1/2 lol. Started with a game of tag and ended with a game of tag. I couldn't have asked for a better ending. Saying that Takahashi can't write endings just isn't true. She ended both Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku in the same year in 1987. And Maison Ikkoku couldn't have a more definitive conclusion. I won't say Urusei Yatsura's ending is as good as Maison Ikkoku but it's definitely up there. You don't have to see what happens after the credits. The answer is already there. It's not hard to connect the dots. This random YouTube comment sums it up the best: Shinobu dates Inaba, Sakura marries Tsubame, Rei keeps eating with Ran, Mendo, and the Stormtroopers give up on Lum, etc. And of course, Ataru ends up with Lum. Showing the fates of all the characters might've been good for clarity and it's not like I wouldn't have liked watching them but I don't think they fit an episodic series like Urusei Yatsura. We also see glimpses of the future in the 3rd OVA so showing it again would be redundant. This is a great ending but just an okay movie so I understand why some people might not like this. But I think the ending scene enough was great enough to elevate this movie over others. The animation, music, and especially the voice acting are perfect. I loved how the flashbacks even paid tribute to some filler episodes of the anime. The new character design was a bit odd but I think it fits the movie with its more serious tone. And thank God, the movie didn't trade its humor for seriousness like the 4th movie. It did make me laugh a lot even though I already watched it. Now I wonder how or if the Remake will adapt this. Hopefully it rectifies some of the issues with the movie prior to the ending. |
| Finally here at the 5th movie, I didn’t mean to wait this long to watch it but the important thing is that I did, and wow this was another fantastic film. It was definitely more reminiscent of the first movie with a more grounded plot, the ones after that have had psychological aspects that were very prominent, as well as being generally trippy, and I am a fan of stuff like that but it was nice to have a movie that felt more like an episode of the anime since the first movie (not that the anime didn’t have its trippy episodes lol). And after reading posts in this thread, turns out one of the reasons this felt like an anime episode is because this is actually from the manga, very cool to find that out, so that explains why this is called “The Final Chapter” even further. And I really enjoyed the plot of this one, there were several layers to it too, at first you had the situation with Rupa and Lum’s marriage which seemed like it would be the main plot of the movie, well then they introduced Carla who’s a childhood friend of Rupa’s who actually loves him so that complicated things, and speaking of Carla I really loved her, of all the movie waifus so far she’s definitely a favorite of mine, perhaps even of the entire series, I just love her design and she was a very fun character. And then from there you had Lum and Ataru that kept putting distance between each other due to a misunderstanding, and it just keeps going with the world ending plot along with the memory erasure lol, so much was going on but it didn’t feel overwhelming, I think they did a good job keeping all the separate plots in check, although there was one exception with Rupa’s great grandfather randomly cancelling the wedding lol, definitely one of those things that happened because of how many chapters this adapted And among all this you had some awesome moments, some favorites of mine include Benten laying the law down with Lum (not just because of my Benten bias lol), Mendou’s war against the memory erasure device, pretty much all the bits with Carla, and especially that final scene where you realize why Ataru is being so stubborn, because in that situation saying “I love you” would seem like a lie no matter how much he meant it, so in the end I’m really glad he didn’t say it, you also had Lum’s amazing reaction to finding out how much he cared to top it off, such a great ending scene for what was supposed to the “Final Chapter”, of course it’s not really because there’s more OVAs and one more movie lol. And lastly, I really liked the redone scenes from the anime near the end, they could have easily reused scenes but they didn’t, I really love the attention to detail there, it was nostalgic as well. I also found it funny they decided to include Inaba from the most recent OVA before this movie came out, I’m sure folks that aren’t doing release order like I am were confused as to who this guy is lol, he didn’t even need to be there really but I was happy to see him return, as that was a very good OVA, almost like a movie itself. And I also want to point out how good this movie looked, I watched this one on Blu-ray and it looked very amazing with the new art style, and of course the art and animation in general was very nice, although I do prefer the style the anime and movies before this used I think this looked very good. And I can’t forget to mention the amazing ending theme of this movie, it was more of a lighthearted song than a serious one and I liked that, because Urusei Yatsura is a goofy series at the end of the day so ending the “final chapter” with a song like that is fitting. And to end this review, I’ll say my placement of the movies as of rn probably goes 2, 5, 3, and I’d say 4 and 1 are tied for me because despite movie 4’s issues I did have a lot of fun with it. And I guess with that I’m gonna attempt to finish the OVAs and the 6th and final movie before this year ends, can I do it? I sure hope so lol. |
