No supernatural elements or monsters in it, only realistic humans. Preferably something with good battle scenes and military strategy but something else based in those time periods could be interesting as well.

Kingdom - all about warfare, set during the warring states before unification of China
Saiunkoku Monogatari - modelled after ancient Chinese court and customs but fictional
House of Five Leaves - feudal Japan, samurai, historical, not action-centric
Sword of the Stranger - movie, same setting as above, action adventure
Utakoi - ancient Japan, different from the rest, about poetry and famous literary figures
Hyouge Mono - haven't watched this myself, set in Japan's warring states
Nobunaga Concerto - same period as above, about the famous Oda Nobunaga

Thanks I'll check them out, Kingdom especially looks good.

I hope you do. Kingdom and Saiunkoku are my particular favourites. In case you can't deal with the CGI in Kingdom, I'd strongly recommend the manga too (it gets even better there anyway).

I highly endorse Kingdom.

Unfortunately, the only manga/adaptations I'm familiar with that cover the Three Kingdoms era (Sangokushi, Souten Kouro, maybe a few others) are pretty campy and melodramatic, but that's become par for the course for depictions of that age.

Harem is the opiate of the Anime fandom masses.

I have watched Hyouge Mono, and it's unlike any story you've watched about samurai. All the big names of the Sengoku period are here like Oda Nobunaga and Hideyoshi Toyotomi. The story follows one of Nobunaga's vassals, an effective negotiator and connoisseur of the masterpieces of art used in tea ceremonies. Pretty much everyone, including the MC, are historical personages.

The show carries a tag line at the beginning, "This is a work of fiction." That's especially true in its presentation of the events at Honnouji Shrine.

There are a few set-piece battle scenes that harken back to classic Japanese films by directors like Kurosawa, but most of the story focuses on politics and scheming with only limited action sequences.

About 5 episodes into Kingdom now. Its pretty good so far. I figure the military aspect won't come into the show until a bit later, I'm hoping when it does it'll be a little like an Ancient China version of Code Geass.

I'm not sure why people are complaining about the CGI and animation. I think the animation is pretty decent. I do wish they hadn't added in the occasional weird human-like but not exactly creature. Seemed a bit like 300 in that respect, but at least its not a central theme of the show.

Oh glad to know you don't mind the animation! I found the story/characters far more intriguing right off the bat so it wasn't an issue for me either, but many drop it for that reason unfortunately.

Kingdom is a lot more realistic and in-dept when it comes to war and politics compared to Code Geass, I daresay. Probably because it's based on actual history and does not have any 'unnatural' elements. You'll get to that soon enough, the first arc (that you're watching) is kind of the 'springboard' that launches the rest of the story into play. Enjoy! :)

Yeah Code Geass is technically in a futuristic like world (although now its in the past lol) so having a Sci-fi world allows them to take liberties with realism that something based in the real world can't.

I saw some people in the comments section on one of the episodes saying that the producers did the animation the way they did to make it feel like Ancient China instead of feeling like a Japanese anime. I thought that was an interesting explanation.

Nobunaga no Shinobi
This comedy short animation follows the story of a kunoichi that served Nobunaga. Comedy aside it is full of historical trivia and follow the historical chronicle truthfully. It is a fun way to learn about the sengoku era, especially the Oda clan timeline.

Sengoku Musou
This anime is an adaptation of a hack n slash game Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada made by Koei Tecmo. It follows the story of the famous Sanada clan brothers during the event that leads to Sekigahara battle. It is embellished in it's historical content but still maintain the historical events that leads to it.

If you're willing to expand beyond the themes there are couple of good anime with great battle out there, one that I'd really recommend is:

Altair: Record of battles
This story follows a fictional nation that roughly represent a mix of Ottoman-Sassanid dynasty. It has awesome details of the equipment, strategy, and even some parts and bits comparable to some of the historical battle in the region but with a twist (seljuk offensive, Venice x Genoa, Siege of Viena, Siege of Cyprus, etc.) The tactics displayed are based on historical account except the belligerents.

Interesting...if that's true I wasn't aware of it. But it makes sense as most Chinese anime do tend to look like that. Either way, they changed it to a more accommodating style in the second season (not sure whether it was fan feedback or better budget or something else but I was glad to see a more visually appealing presentation).

I just watched Tsukikage Ran, which is cool as hell. It's very low key, but really fun with lots of cool fights- kinda reminds me of if Samurai Champloo had been made 15 years earlier, but with female protagonists; it's about a female Samurai, and Chinese martial artist chick wandering around pre-Meiji Japan, fighting yakuza and stuff.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/606/Kazemakase_Tsukikage_Ran

Also Shigurui is extremely good- probably the most historically accurate anime, believable anime I've seen, about a samurai household/martial arts school seeking revenge for a murder. It's very serious and 'mature', with really strong production. A really unique, under-watched, nice-looking anime.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/2216/Shigurui

Or, idk if it's something you'd be into, but it's set in historic Japan and about martial arts- Sabu and Ichi is amazing; it's super-old, from 1968, and was the first anime specifically made for adults, which played in a 'late night' 9:30pm timeslot. It's about a shinsengumi (a kind of Edo-period police force) and an old blind masseuse/swordsman solving crimes, with a kind of "whodunnit" format. It hold's up insanely well for it's age.
