Have you ever rewatched a favorite anime, only to find it's no longer a favorite?

Example:

When I was around...8, I think(?), I watched Higurashi season 1 on Youtube. I remember being blown away by how gory, and creepy it was. If I had to rate it back then, I would've probably given it a 9/10. It was one of my favorite anime of all time.

Recently, as a 19 year old, I rewatched Higurashi season 1 on dvd, and it was...pretty good. Good enough to be a 7/10, meaning I really liked it. But compared to how good I THOUGHT it was back when I was a kid, it was shit.

EDIT: Has this happened to you guys? Have you gone back and rewatched a favorite anime, and realized it was no longer one of your favorites?

Thankfully, never so far. Realizing that what you think was providing to your life a lot of value, suddenly isn't providing it anymore, would be obviously truly discouraging.

i re-watched opm a couple of times in subs and dubs just to feel the hang of the difference and surprisingly enough it was as enjoyable as the first time. but i get what you're saying, i think it's because the first time you go in blind and that plays a big role

a little off-topic, almost every year around fall i re-watch my favorite movie inception and enjoy it every single time. i can't say i have even the slightest of disappointment after these 6 times i've seen it. (but shit, it's one of a masterpiece, what the fuck could i find disappointing in it)
if you truly enjoy the piece in every way there is then even after revisiting it you will still enjoy it the same way

I've re-watched Blood+, Terra e...(TV), Shounen Onmyouji, La Corda D'oro Primo Passo and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun more than a few times and I love them just as much or even more when I re-watch them. I've re-watched Akatsuki no Yona only once but made me change my score from 8 to 10.

There's also Kyo Kara Maoh which I used to re-watch to no end in the past but after buying the BluRay Box sets I couldn't finish re-watching it even once and I lowered my score from a 10 to 7 for season 1, 9 to 5 for OVAs and 10 to 6 for season 3, also removed the OVAs and S3 from my favorites list. Just don't feel like continuing to re-watch it anymore specially after what happened in the manga. I just waste my time on its games (VNs) and drama CDs instead which for most part are really funny just like the anime I used to enjoy.

Higurashi was my favorite manga, I hope that re-reading it years later will be just as thrilling as it was the first time.

That's because you watched Higurashi when you were a kid, and now you re-watched it after 11 years, no shit there would be a difference. It's like saying you still love Dragon Ball Z the same way you did when you were a kid.

Nah, I don't remember this happening to me.

Bleach; my gateway drug to anime. The series that brought me to the doorstep of the amazing medium.

  • First re-watch: I fucking love Kenpachi.
  • Second re-watch: What the fuck is this show? Can't they fucking pick an idea and stick with it?
  • Third re-watch: Did I honestly expect anything more from Bleach?

This is most likely due to the fact that when you watch more anime and expand your library of anime you've seen, you'll know what contributes to making a series you like and is in turn, good. Once you start noticing these problems, your favourite series becomes nothing more than a big compilation of flaws, this is assuming you didn't watch the apex of what anime had to offer as one of your first few series.

There also seems to be some kind of misconception of your favourite series must be the best series. It doesn't have to be anything except what you call it, "Your Favourite." Your favourite anime can be multiple reasons, the quality, the significance that the anime had on your life like introducing you to the medium and making life long friends through it, or source of coping through escapism or numerous different reasons.

I've rewatched mahou sensei negima many times. Having an active imagination, I still like it to this day. I don't go out of my way to watch something that I can still remember though. Given the count of anime that I still haven't watch, I rewatch only when there's no internet and I'm bored of playing strategy game which might not be the case.

Never happened to me because whenever I've re-watched my favorite anime they became more enjoyable for me and not 1 time but at the very least 10 times.

Toradora and Golden Time. I didn't like the female leads in both of those series after a rewatch.

Not really. I usually enjoy it as much as I did. When I feel like it was flavor of the moment for me, I just replace it after a while with show that I enjoyed but I don't actually rewatch it

It happened to me with Nanatsu no Taizai and No Game No Life. The first time I watched them I was like "wow, this shit is good", but the second time I watched Nanatsu no Taizai and the third time I watched NGNL I was like "it's not that good, or at least not as good as my real favourites" and I lowered their scores from 10 to 9.

It happened the opposite with Kill la Kill, though. I liked it a lot more the second time I watched it, and it became one of my favourites then.

I'd say it never happened it last 4-5 years of me watching anime, but I am already adult so my taste is more stable (it can always change of course). Otherwise I think it's quite common when you are young, especially if you rewatch stuff you liked as a kid.

Not yet at least, but I'm quite youthful, still.
Perhaps once I am 30 and have a wife and kids there's a fair chance all of a sudden I'll come to hate my current favorites.
