I think it's a little overrated, but its a decent show.

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."

It's not meant to be a sad anime, but it presents some situations where you just feel so sorry for the characters.
Throughout most of the anime I found myself surprised, I'd watched a good amount of anime when I saw it, and I was familiar with most of the cliches, and every time Steins;Gate would lead into a cliche'd scenario, it would always end completely different than I expected.
Also it has a phenominal soundtrack and amazing voice actors.
I think Steins;Gate is a good watch, at the very least, it'll keep you guessing until the very end.

It's one of the best anime I've watched, so yes, it is worth watching.
The story is excellent, the ending is great, Okabe is a unique and charismatic main character and there's also a bit of romance.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

The first few episodes does not worth every second though it's a decent build up. The pacing is a bit slow in the first few episodes but once you get passed them be ready to get your mind blown!

It's not rated as high as it is for nothing. Purely story-wise it's the best anime I've ever seen, Okarin's perhaps the best protagonist ever and it does get pretty emotional on times on top of that. It also has one of the most perfect endings to any series ever.

As always with these kinds of adaptations, the VN is still better, however Steins is still one of the best VN => Anime adaptations out there, and the anime is more than enough to satisfy your needs if you don't think you have time to read the original.

From 18 episodes, I'd say it's an excellent moe harem anime that features comedy in the first half, drama in the second half, and plenty of meaty sci-fi/time-travel elements tying it all together.

Everything that connects to MAL

Contains Ecchi, but not Tagged Ecchi: Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3

Not first few episodes... The first twelve episodes, that's like half of the season being slow on almost everything except for the time research part. Ending of 12th episode =

I've always... always been watching you... This whole time... Because you were there... That's why I was able to try hard. So you could have some balance! So you wouldn't treat me like a kid! So you would see me as an actual girl! Even while you were gone... You were right here! You were right here in my heart!

If you can get over the same shitty tropes of anime and don't mind (very) soft sci-fi you'll probably love it.

I don't really recommend it, but if you are mad enough to plunge yourself to the abyss scientific pursuit, I guarantee your time far from being wasted. The series may have started quite boring and somehow they just really kill you to keep on watching. But I dare you to endure the pain and suffering cost you by such boredom and sore through the depths of the insanity of the plot. THe first, the second, the third even the sixth. may veiled your virgin mind, with sadness and despair, but do not lose hope my dear, it was all to keep you from breaking yourself, because once you see the middle and the main plot, you might break yourself to sadness, to misery, to dilemma, to destruction of soul, to eventual heartache, but all in all for the satisfaction of once soul. TO be able to boast of having watched such masterpiece.

Perhaps, I might need to spoil some important details and beware you might curse yourself reading this. But it must not bother you, for I shall construct my thoughts in the manner of a philosopher. What would you do, to rewrite the past to have a good future? WOuld you resolve to time travel? What happens if the past you had rewritten turns to be the underlying cause of a more bitter future? Would you undo the past and return to scraps? Would you return to such timeline where you suffered? Or would you return to such worldline just to lose the life of your beloved?

I know how vague my propositions are, but dwell not to them but to the story it offers you. You might say, sci-fi is dead serious, but don't cry for it does not limit itself to science fiction alone. It tackles more than that. It covers the emotions of people, friendship, romance, humor especially between the protagonist and his genius assistant. There is even more to say, but by the limitation of my human nature prohibits me to further disclosure of what my heart is bursting to speak.

Oh, just watch it, it will not kill you anyway.

Totally give the series a go! I just finished the series last week and I loved it! There are so many plot twists and the characters are unique. Some people say it feels slow at first and then gets better, however, I liked it from the first episode. Sure, it may seem a bit confusing at first with the time traveling, but you'll get used to it. It's only 24 episodes long so it's not a major commitment.

Also, if you choose to watch it, I recommend watching it subbed
