I am currently reading this series (I'm at chapter 162) and honestly don't understand where the popularity of this series comes from.

The male cast is kind of disgusting in their way of thinking at many times, the humor is not as funny as I've often heard about, the ecchi is mostly just disgusting or unerotic (of course, not always but often enough) and the plot itself is nothing that special.
So, please explain to me why so many people seem to praise Prison School as a masterpiece.

The only aspects which motivated me to read further and further were a few characters (Hana :D) & story elements (e.g. "the yaoi-arc"; didn't expect that xD), the artstyle and the urge to have at least finished the manga so that I can argue why I like/ dislike it with proof. ^^° Maybe it's because I'm a female....

Well, you could always try Grand Blue if the Prison School humour doesn't suit your taste.

There are lots of reasons why. The plot might be unrealistic and downright bizarre, but the writing is still genius for most part with great suspense and hilarious comedy. The manga has excellent artwork and very interesting characters in various ways. Even the ecchi stuff often has depth to it.

I also like the maturity of the series. It's hard to find great seinen manga of this kind.

Well, welcome to the male brain. :)

If it's not your cup of tea, then it's not your cup of tea. Simple as that after all I guess.

very well said. Especially how ecchi scenes also have some depth. There are definitely some forced ecchi scenes but in general almost all of them are either consciously/purposefully too awkward or too serious and meaningful.

Also they are not "not erotic". Especially with one of the best ever artworks ever existed, they are amazingly well done. The infamous hand-holding chapter was a prime example to that.

It's funny, because that's how real people are likely to act; though with obviously outrageous circumstances.

I don't know, personally I hated it.

I guess most people like it for the comedy and because it is over the top.

When it's heavy in the ecchi department and mainly meant for a male audience I don't think female readers would like it. I personally think it's pretty average but has had it's insane moments.

I personally, haven't gave it a watch from what I've heard about it. I dunno, if ecchi is your go-to then sure why not. Otherwise, I can't really give you a clear answer.

ugh, I'm so irrelevant here.

Because it's actually good at what it try to do.
You said it's disgusting, over the top and lot of ecchi scene are unerotic, that is exactly what the show try to achieve and it succeed. You might hate the show for the reason above but most people like it for the reason above. Simple as that.

Another aspect why made it so great imo -other than some particular reasons above- was the way it spoof movie title and moment like every chapter was something that made it standout, uniquely.

the real question is why would you read 160 chapters on a manga to complain, should have dropped it long ago.
i think this manga is perfect excluding the festival arc

Because I've read many manga through the end even though I disliked them. Sometimes it is for knowing about famous series or because someone recommended them to me (e.g. Fairy Tale, Suzuka, Sankarea,... ) In case of Prison School I just liked Hana and the "normal" artstyle.

Well, if the humor hasn't clicked with you by chapter 160 I'd say it's just your taste. I see why you could dislike the characters and find the ecchi disgusting, and even the plot uninteresting, but I always find it funny at least. I watched the series with every one of my friends who watch anime and all of them at least laughed, even some girls, but comedy always comes down to taste.

I'd say Prison School is actually pretty hit or miss, the reason why I like it is basically the opposite of what you said tbh. I like most of the characters, I know some of them are disgusting but at some points that makes them funny, the only manga that makes me laugh more is Grand Blue, the ecchi (oversized tits Meiko aside) is some of the best I've seen and I found the plot to be pretty engaging for a comedy manga. And of course there is also the amazing art and best girl Hana which you have already mentioned.

It's a brilliantly hilarious manga. The best thing is how the mangaka is able to take a joke and stretch it to absurd proportions. The artwork is amazing and every character has some weird quirk that makes them feel more real. It's like meeting your friends from school and telling dirty jokes.

The only dip in quality was during the Cavalry battle, which was obviously a stall for new ideas, but after that it rebounded magnificently.

It's actually a good question that I asked myself when I discovered the anime. I generally don't like comedies (even more so when they are exagerated), over the top ecchi generally annoys me a lot because it's being used in a bad way and we lose in characters quality just so we can see a little more boobs or ass.

After reading this, you could ask why the fuck I could be interested in a manga like Prison school which at first sight has it all.

The thing is I love the way the characters are developped, particularely Kyoshi, Hana, and Mari. The relationships are totally fucked up and EVERY character (even the "so perfect" Mari) is kinda fucked up inside. They all have flaws, and every one of them seems unlikable at first sight. But they all have a "hidden side" and each time this side is explored the characters are getting very interesting ! And the Ecchi is often really well used (not always, of course XD )

Of course the situations the characters get into are totally weird, absurd, and wouldn't happen IRL (well... I hope so °° ) but I find them really fun, and there a few scenes (with Mari & Hana, particularely) which I would call "epic" ^^. I love the humour, although its not why Im reading the manga. I actually want to see where the weird relationship between Kyoshi, Hana, Mari & Chiyo (just kill her already =_= ) is going. And I wanna see more of those epic scenes we already saw until now.

Fortunately the festival arc is over and it seems to be really back on track with a good arc, now ^^
