I've noticed this recently. Even as a joke or something serious, no matter the genre, BL is more prominent than GL in normal animes. Like if it's a high school setting, characters would even joke about if he swings the other way (shoujo, shounen, even mystery series makes a mention of it) Then there's Trap culture.

Is Japan more open to gays than lesbians?

Think it's more that fujoshi tend to very frequently be into BL whereas otaku generally prefer harems over GL to live out their fantasies. So although GL isn't as common as BL, reverse harems are also not as common as regular harems

So I don't think Japan's openness to homosexuality differs between genders, it's just a cultural preference in media that's ended up like this

I think japanese girls were attractive to BL. as what I've observed from their culture.
I'm just guessing though

The world is cruel, ugly and pitiful. Let's watch anime and make it colorful

From what I gathered:

GL is more adapted to general audience (girls flirting between themselves is regarded as more "normal" than boys), while BL is more common (sells better).

It is somewhat paradoxical, but anyhow…

And what do you mean by that?
Otokonoko ("trap") is even nicher than yaoi or yuri.
And if the first otokonoko appeared in the yaoi genre, today it's not necessarily homosexual anymore.

And if you're speaking about stuffs like the cross-dressing in the Visual Kei, you can actually thanks the yuri culture for that, not the yaoi one.
The cross-dressing in the spectacle world is an offspring of the otokoyaku ("reverse trap") from Takarazuka, one of the two pillars of the yuri culture.

I don't know about you, but like every anime i've ever watched has those 2 girls that are waaaaaaay to close to each other that always say they're straight, but because romance never happens, it's questionable. It even happens among haremetes so yeah...

I think Japan uses homosexuality as a joke when they dont want to take the content seriously, and male homosexuality is waaaaaaaaaaay more of a joke than female homosexuality in anime. Female homosexuality is generally never used as a joke. The only time i've seen it used as a joke is in Girl's Bravo but then one of the characters is a straight up lesbian in that anime so even then it's only half of a joke.

Look at it that way: in a male-centered society and/or medium, a girl that likes other girls is lost for the guys, whereas a boy that likes boys is one less competitor.

Still, there's so much yuri bait out there, I'm not sure I can agree to the topic. Not that I watch many shows with more than one, two guys.

Well I think it's about the fanbase.

Also some people think yuri is a normal thing but yaoi is a special case.Since at the end they are both same Idk where this come from.

Well that's another half joke like Girl's Bravo. Moo-tan is legit in love with Nyaa tan, in a not so subtle way like the yuri yuri series. She's a straight up lesbian, no getting around that, but guys just play gay around each other. There's usually no debate as to a male characters sexuality.

Like the jojo's scene where the Jojo #2 was all up Abdul. Both characters are adults with families so their sexuality isn't in question. They just use the scene as a joke.

Well, I heard that yaoi is actually written for women as a fetish supposedly.

Many yuri manga are written by women and actually targeted towards lesbians. For example, Milk Morinaga is a famous yuri writer who is a woman.

So I think the different is that yaoi has more fanbase because rather than being targeted at gay males, it's used as a fetish for girls/women.

That's why they have a separate genre called bara that's about gay males actually written for gay males and I'm not sure, but I don't think its anywhere near as popular as yaoi.

Yuri doesn't really have any separate genres because its all lumped together since unless its a hentai or ecchi, its not usually used for fetish reasons.

As a yuri fan and a lesbian, that's just my take on it, but I could be wrong.

Minds you:
Written by women != written by lesbian/targeted to lesbian.

The magazine Yuri Hime was never targeted toward lesbian. I dunno for Tsubomi.
Actual magazines targeted toward lesbian were (since they're all defunct) Phryné, MIST and Anise.
Out of the 3, only Anise seems to have decently received manga (rated above 7) in MAL.

The only "major" yuri mangaka that I know for sure that she's lesbian, is Sachiko Takeuchi.
Morinaga Milk and Jin Takemiya said in their manga's after-word that they base some of their stories on their own experiences, so it's easy to extrapolate that they are lesbian/bi.
I also heard that Akiko Morishima is bi too, but only "heard of".

And Ebine Yamaji that is often presented as a prime example of a lesbian yuri mangaka said in a interview that she's actually not lesbian.

Although I guess that most mangaka who published in the 3 "lesbian magazines" are actually lesbian/bi. But for Yuri Hime and Tsubomi, it's more doubtful. Most mangaka don't speak about it.
It's not surprising since making a coming out in Japan tends to be considered as a militant act, big magazines don't want that.

Although I agree with your message, that yuri don't exclude lesbian like yaoi tend to do with gay. But the word "many" is at best a wild extrapolation, I think.

Well, many have answered your main question
And about the last one, homosexuality is popular in Japanese media, anime and manga mostly and in reality, limited to those artists who come out as a homosexual.
And outside it's a typical thing where it's tolerated more in the urban areas and lesser almost nil in rural areas. There aren't any laws against it but fewer recognition for it. Most people tend to not come out unless necessary.
Read Homosexuality in modern Japan
