Hi, I would like to know if I have to watch the 103 episode-long version before I think about watching this.

Would you watch the sequel to a film you hadn't seen?

If you have not read the manga, or seen the previous anime, then you won't know know the characters, their relationships, or what's happening.

Unless you go on D.Gray-Man wikia and read up on everything. That is something people do. I have done it with some anime I was behind on.

If you didn't read the manga, yes you have to watch the prequel to get some of the references and character relationship.

Since there is no additional introduction to the storyline in Hallow, it actually feels like just continuing the first season, so you definitely need to know the prequel or manga or you'd be lost at basically every scene.

You have to watch the prequel or read the manga. You won't understand anything if you don't. It's a sequel, not a remake, thus, the first part is veeeery important to understand what's going on.

English is not my native language, sorry if I've committed some grammar mistakes xD

Of course.... Why would you wanna watch a sequel before a prequel...

You might want to read the manga instead. The transition to season 2 skips some things that only occurred in the manga. Also depending on your reading pace it might be faster for you to read it instead of watching it. But yes, you either need to watch it or read it in order to understand what's going on.

Considering it is airing 8 years after the previous series ended some people were expecting it to be more of a reboot or at least provide some recap for new watchers.

There is recap but I felt it's like it was "just in case it was years ago and you forgot even the basic core plot"

A 12 episode reboot seems pretty pointless...

Don't bother. The anime is not good and it is waste of time. 103 episodes will take so long to finish and there is much better anime out there

If you want long running anime then watch hunter x hunter 2011 or Jojo series or Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho

Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho is little boring at early episodes but it gets better later. D.Gray-man was mediocre from start to finish. I would even say that that early episodes were not as boring as the later ones.

Because not all sequels are direct sequels and some are stories on their own with only chronologically happen after a prequel but otherwise have no real connection with a story or characters from prequel.

Not if you reboot only first 12 episodes.
The real world is past the virtual world is future.
