I love threads like this, and I love it even more when creators take the time to do research on a topic. Overall the series was average and the movie was slightly above average, but the series will hold a special place in my heart as one that really put in effort.

[Trivia] What Arisa holds in C-5M Super Galaxy airlifter is a real Takeoff Performance Chart. [Google]
You can see how she carefully checked the payload and the condition before the flight.

So, in reality, can C-5M Super Galaxy loaded with Ooarai's 8 panzers actually fly?
Considering the fact that C-5M can carry two M1 Abrams at once, you may think 8 panzers are hopeless, saying "heh, it's anime after all ;-P". But I want to say that's not true.

Let's try calculate. The official Max payload of C-5M is 129,274kg. The total weight of Ooarai panzers is this.

The data from official website tells it's 208.95t. However, it seems that some of those data are of combat weight, not dry weight. The chart below is my recalculation of roughly estimated total dry weight. It is 175.8t, which means it's still 46.5t overweight. Giving up? No.

C-5M's Max take off weight is 381.018kg, and Operating weight (self weight) is 181,437kg.

(Max take off weight 381t) > (Operational weight 181.4t)+(Ooarai panzer weight 175.8t)+(Operators' weight 0.15t)= 357.35t
!!! THE SUPER GALAXY CAN FLY !!!

They may need to cut fuels down for that, but I firmly believe that a rich school like Saunders would have an aerial tanker or two.

The weight problem is cleared. Here's another problem; the runway. Big airplane like C-5M requires runway of at least 2000m. Does the small school at evacuation site have such a huge school ground?

Of course not. Heh, it's anime. l knew that.;-P

Actually, that should be Takashi not Takeshi. The fansubber possibly misheard Yuuki's mention of Takashi. If you rewatch episode 6 it's Takashi that Arisa mentions and not Takeshi.

I don't know the where the four flags come from (various samurai clans I reckon). No doubt the flags were identified by fans discussing the TV series on Reddit or elsewhere (my time on Reddit can be measured in minutes).

[AFV]I'm going to post a brief history of Japanese tanks, since they aren't very popular even among AFV geeks. I won't vouch for accuracy of info.

Type 89 I-Go Medium tank (1928)

The first mass-produced Japanese tank. It was developed 17 years prior to Centurion Mk.I, making it the oldest tank used in GuP Panzerfahren activities.

The 57 mm main gun, designed for infantry support, was almost useless for anti-tank combat. A military record said the gun couldn't penetrate the frontal armor plate of M3 Light tank even from point-blank range.

Japanese media of that time promoted the tank as Steel Bull (Tetsugyu), but later changed to Steel Lion (Tetsujishi), in answer to the tank operators' objection.

Having the characteristic of both light tank and medium tank, the Type 89 was branched to two successor models: Type 95 Ha-Go Light tank and Type 97 Chi-Ha Medium tank.

Type 95 Ha-Go Light tank (1934)

Type 95 Ha-Go was the most numerous Japanese light tank which served as main tank of that time. The 3rd oldest tank in Panzerfahren activities, next to Type89 and CV33. The small 37mm tank gun was completely ineffective against any ally tanks.

Rukuriri should just ignore Fukuda's Ha-Go in this scene. The gun would't penetrate any part of Matilda's front and turret armor.

Type 97 Chi-Ha Medium tank (1936)
Arguably the most well-known Japanese tanks. It is easily recognizable with asymmetric turrets and the semi-circular radio antennae nicknamed Hachimaki(headband) antenna.

Chi-Ha was designed to give firepower support for Ha-Go. The tank had a state-of-the-art diesel engine, but the 57 mm main gun, designed for infantry support, was a carry over from Type 89, which means it's useless as hell.

The gun's low muzzle velocity caused horrible bullet drop. In this scene, the dropped shell hit Matilda's gas tank by chance, giving Chihatan a spectacular score.

Japanese otaku often say the small and weak Chi-Ha looks "cute" in some ways compared to Western Macho-looking panzers, thus calling it Chiha-tan (-tan being suffix for small girls).

In 1939, all Type 89, Type 95 and Type 97 engaged the first WW2-era Tank vs Tank battle with Red army's BT-7 at the Battles of Khalkhin Gol, which proved these tanks were almost powerless in TvsT warfare.
Thus they upgraded Chi-Ha to the Type 97 "ShinHoTo" model, with an improved turret and high-velocity 47mm anti-tank gun. The tank is considered the best mass-produced Japanese tank of WW2 era.

Type 97 ShinHoto Chi-Ha Medium tank (1942)
also known as Type 97 Special.

As a side note, Russians too found their BT-7 was incapable against infantry charge attacks and anti-tank guns. The lesson encouraged development of T-34.

Type 3 Chi-Nu
A candidate of next-generation Japanese tank was Type-4 Chi-To, but they couldn't complete its development.
The Type-3 Chi-Nu was developed as a replacement of Type-4. Mounted with powerful yet hard-to-use 75mm gun, the tank was too heavy for marine transport, and was deployed as the defense of Japan mainland.
