Good is putting it mildly. I don't think there's any other anime which have the same amount of detail that they do.

Check out Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. It only has two episodes out so far but the visuals are one of the best I've seen.

It is funny, one of my real life friends said it looks like crap, that it looks like a old time anime. I just laugh, he's a casually so it's not a surprise.

Old anime? lol maybe he's talking about the character designs because they're not what you'd normally see nowadays.

My favorite quotes from animes:

Those who seek miracles will never experience one. The hand of salvation only extends to people
who try to make miracles happen. - Ef a tale of melodies.
I destroy worlds. I create worlds. - Code geass
We are humans. - Shinsekai yori

He pointed out that the Gundam and everything looks old and ugly. But he is the same person that don't want to watch snk, because of the black lining around the characters. Some people are just weird.

Movies/OVA's:
Garden of Words! (I just ordered my blu-ray of this and I can't wait for it to get here)
-also solid story and only 45 minutes long. Images might melt face

Redline (never watched the movie but I've seen videos/gifs. looks amazing)

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (Love this move also low-key REALLY nice visuals)

Anything from Ghibli has really nice animation and that classic artstyle

Kara no Kyoukai (Garden of sinners)
-more action oriented. Great fights. 7 movie series

Shows:
Fate/Zero (Show looks VERY VERY good especially for a 2 seasons show)

Anything in the Monogatari Series (Bakemonogatari thru Owarimonogatari)
-More than just looks good, it's hard to explain but the artstyle and cinematography is very unique

Shinsekai Yori (Pretty good looking. watched recently and I enjoyed it a lot)

Anything from Kyoto Animation

Also you could check out SakugaBooru which is a website of videos/gifs of stunning animation.. just hit the random button, see what comes up and watch that lol

I was going to recommend Moribito as well, but someone above suggested it and got a "it's not what I'm looking for" response. I can't imagine why.

Other options
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Dennou Coil
Mononoke and its prequel "Bake Neko:"

Despite their age, Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion still looks amazing.
For most recent shows, Kyousougiga, Fate/Zero, Guilty Crown, Gankutsuou, FLCL, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari.
If you want movies, Kara no Kyoukai, Akira and Redline

Many recs so far do have amazing graphics, but not really in a realistic style which you are looking for.

Garden of Words which you have said you are going to watch definitely does, and is probably the best example of realism in terms of animation.

If you enjoyed that then you should check out 5cm per second, which is by the same director a few years prior but still has comparable graphics.

Then you can go ahead and check out some of his newer works which I haven't watched but probably have the same art style.

Wolf Children, by someone else, also has really realistic animation
