Yeah such chill story no suffering at all. :D

Probably ultra rare case in anime where most of parents are not dead , talk with kids and listen to them, and kids are not oblivious to their calls and dont go into emo outbursts for 2 seasons.

OT NHK.

Alps no Shoujo Heidi is extremely "down to earth." There are entire episodes about things like making cheeze, going sledding, or going on a day trip to the park. On paper it should be incredibly boring, and yet I rather enjoyed it.

Lucky Star, easily. No dramatic structure, no laugh-out-loud gags, just a bunch of girls talking.

Aria is really romanticized and magical and everyone acts super-nice and... it doesn't really seem down to earth, imo.

It drilled this concept to the head so it kind of lost me. Just girls talking sounds like a bad premise for an animated show. There needs to be movement there.

Like the most relaxed, out of this world feeling

lol.
Maybe if you emphasized "this", as in : this world feeling
------------------------------

She and her Cat or : "how to put a meaningful sth. into 4 minutes"

Look up the creator : Shinkai Makoto

-------------------------------------
On a different level : My Neighbour Totoro.

I don't think anyone will want to follow that understanding, but to me it is a work falling into "realismo magico". I stay with this even if Miyazaki himself tells me I'm wrong. :p

As such it does
■ depict reality, as perceived by its protagonists, resp. the narrator taking into account how protagonists perceive "reality".
■ comment on reality/ our perception, resp. concept of it.

So the story is very down-to-earth, revolving about "everyday" life/ how life continues to happen, even though protagonists are in a special, and dire, situation.
The fantastical elements are - arguably, of course - only happening in the protagonists way of perceiving life.
The younger girl is so young that still all the world is "animate". Fantasy / reality are not yet antagonist concepts, the one easily flows into the other one. The older girl is still young enough that - being with her younger sister so much - she'd let herself fall into following that younger sister's "reality" every now and then. Particularly when she is "weak" - aka. tired, or anxious, or exhausted, or just wanting some escapist relief for a while there.
Also the father is sometimes willing to join the little girl's world/ his daughters's world. That's what parents sometimes do: re-enlive/ re-enter the child-world through their children, so sometimes he is setting his mind as much as he can/ wants into following them into "that world" - and such even encourageing them in living that perception of "world".

Really, everything fantastic in Tonari no Totoro can be explained so that it is/stays a 100% realistic work.
Well, everything but one tiny little thing - and that one I take as an author's (Miyazaki's) twinkle. Like giving a little nod to fans who want the "fantastic" to be "real".
(sorry, that made no sense maybe mainly because English not my native language)

nope. That is 100% a fable - employing anthropomorphised someones to convey a "message of high educational value", so basically propaganda, so not really "down-to-earth".
(Watched it "raw", as I found no subtitles - but I think I did not really need them?)

Down to earth ain't about being relax or whatever. It's about being realistic, reasonable, and understanding.

If a person is down to earth, that person is usually quite reasonable and quite understanding. They're not quick to judge and try to understand things from both side. They are also quite realistic as well. They look at things in a realistic view and consider the limitations of what people can or can't do rather than being overly ambitious or idealistic.

I think it's like saying "the most mellow anime" or a series that's very humbling. I could be wrong though

OP - idk man. I've never really noticed that in any of the anime I've watched. Can you give some good recommendations?

you can't get something more realism than this... the human is very real, the fish too!
