Highly unlikely. It would be kind of stupid to expect people to have watched a 27 year old show to watch the new one.

nope
it's probably marked as a sequel since the main characters are now adults, in the previous shows they were in elementary school

Not sure. I'm still watching this even though I don't watch prequels (according to Japanese wiki, this one is third one, so there are two prequels).
I Two Syaorans from Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE and TRC!!!

No not really. There wasn't any story to it.. Just a bunch of random comedy gag episodes. I watched the 1988 version a long time ago and I don't even remember the episodes anymore.. I just remembered the characters especially Iyami and his "Sheeh" pose. XD

Yes, and you will have to start from the very first anime created, which was Katsudou Shashin from 1907. You can go from there, in an order by year released and watch every single anime created up to the point of today, 6th October 2015.

You can be lazy though and just watch these (skipping some anime midtrack):

For your reference. Don't you dare watch this before watching anything of what I just said.

LOL

Thanks for the replies guys (the troll ones too), I asked this because I didn't want to watch the wrong anime again (Yoru no Yatterman). I think I'll pass this time.

EDIT: Ok fuck it, im giving this a chance.

The new series (which is unfortunately, a "sequel") has very little to do with the 1988 prequel, so watching it is not required.

Not necessarily, this is just the third adaptation of the Osomatsu comic. Each adaptation has its own little characteristics which represent the era they were made in.

1966

1988

But perhaps watching a few episodes would help to get an idea of what this show is like. I had to watch a few of the above two shows to kind of understand the humor and gags to expect from this one.

You don't need to, but you should consider it since it's very funny.
