http://www.dailydot.com/geek/prison-school-anime-funimation-gamergate/

Recently it was discovered that in the English dub of Prison School, Funimation changed a line of dialogue to insult someone under the assumption that they're a part of Gamergate, whereas the original line of dialogue was just about referring to one's superior's correctly. Funimation has been known to take liberties in the past, but this seems awfully odd as its a change that not only changes the meaning of the events going on in show, but it puts something that is clearly not relevant in Japan into a show and pushes views about a very controversial topic.

When complained to about this, members of Funimation made fun of those who complained about this issue, defending it as localization for American audiences to better understand.

I was really upset by this of late, and I was wondering if there are other instances of REALLY BAD localization on Funimation's part in some works as well as what MAL think's of Funi's localization abilities and whether or not this particular scenario was okay to do on Funi's part.

Probably should have posted in this in the Prison School subforum

At least it's not Crayon Shin-chan tier localization

Well I thought this could be a way to talk about Funimation localization as a whole, and not just Prison School's.

Doesn't look like it. It appears to be the dub only.

To be honest I can't stand localization. I'd rather have huge ass notes from the traductor in my subs than something that isn't in the show.

Couldn't care less about whether they changed a trivial detail to benefit it's intended audience or make jokes funnier.

I've been using chihiro subs. It's an original translation and not just a simple edit though I'm not sure how accurate it is either lol

I don't get the reference in this situation either, not a gamer and gave up on Prison School. I just mean in the general sense that if the change is more easily understandable to an English audience or if the joke is funnier then it's a pro rather than a con.

It actually doesn't fit the context of the scene. Instead of saying someone should be more respectful to his superior's, she's basically calling him an asshole.

Does the show's overall plot critically hinge on this one trivial conversation though?

No, not at all. Its just upsetting that they'd change the meaning of something to throw in some controversial topic unrelated to the show that doesn't add to it in any way. What's worse is that 10 or 20 years from now the dub won't make any sense to people. Its like putting a bunch of modern memes in video games and then expecting them to make sense culturally a decade from now.

I see why it could it be a bit out of left field, but two possible things to be aware of here. First this is one of those simuldub things and it's probably a rush job and might not be the final product. Maybe they just went with a joke one of actors cracked in the booth, if you ever seen one of Funi's outtake reels, these people do like to have their fun sometimes with the material. And second this show isn't exactly Shakespeare I think they can be allowed a fair range of creative license.

Nope. NONONONONO. "creative license" is a banned term when you're talking about traduction. If you want to write your book/show, put money into it but don't hijack the work of other people. I had to rewatch a show a couple days ago because of shitty subs changing the meaning of half the lines and it wasn't fun at all.

This is what one of the writers of the dub had to say about it.
What an asshole tbh

Oh maybe, maybe it's the clothes we wear
The tasteless bracelets and the dye in our hair
Or maybe, maybe it's our nowhere towns or our nothing places
But we're trash, you and me
We're the litter on the breeze
We're the lovers on the streets
Just trash, me and you
It's in everything we do
It's in everything we do

I actually find it kind of neat as a DVD/BD collector since I rewatch stuff a lot and switch up the audio language tracks each time. it's actually refreshing to be able to watch the same show and possibly get a slightly different experience.

Also, gamergate was a horrible thing brought on by horrible people, but does that really have a place in a dub of an anime? Like, it's cool that he's against it, but afterwards going around and acting like a moron to people who didn't think the line was appropriate is stupid.

You people act like you don't read this kind of stuff on MAL every day and laugh at it though. Not defending the guy, but just saying it's somewhat ironic.
