The Allowance of Complete, but Unpublished, Webtoons in Database

I understand the reasoning behind the set criteria of only allowing published works in the database but I feel there should be some legitimate exceptions to this rule.

Many webtoons become completed but have yet, and may never, be published beyond the web. That doesn't change the fact that these series began and successfully finished their story; not all can reach the levels of series such as Noblesse and Kubera. I feel ignoring such series which have been seen to the end but lack official tangible printings makes this database incomplete. The creators of these series are comparable to the creators of printed series and a difference of medium should not be what holds these series back from being acknowledged in this database I believe.

I'd like to suggest an exemption to the print rule for webtoons, with the main rule being, it must be officially complete.

I understand this topic has been touched on in the past, but from what I've seen, only in regards to individual series and not necessarily webtoons as a whole.

I hope you'll at least consider what I've suggested, and thank you for reading.

I also want the webtoons to be added. They are also proper manga/mawha, so why not?

I never really understood why the guidelines are restricting database entries in the way they are. While I've been telling myself that's just the way MAL runs, I still don't get it why it is that way. Especially when there are many people who read unprofessional webtoons and such, all limitations written in the guidelines themselves.

I would like a rational explanation with the reasoning from the staff, but until one arrives and I acknowledge it, I support this thread.

We considered adjusting our rules for Naver when this situation first began with Noblesse. But we decided not to then and we have not been given a good enough reason to change that decision. High quality works will be published by reputable publishing companies and then they will be added to the database. If Tower of God is as good as everyone says, then it will eventually be published as well. The other works that Naver hosts as "webtoons"? I'm not sure.

In summary:
- Naver is not a reputable publishing company in the manhwa industry. Naver is a search portal.
- While Naver may meet your definition of a digital publisher, we do not allow digital-only publishers' works into our database.
- We have rethought our guidelines in the past, but we have chosen to not modify them.
- This largely has to do with the fact that manhwa is not the focus of our database and we have no way to determine Naver's credibility.
- Once these works are published by reputable companies, they will be added to the database.

I'm sorry, we don't have any plans to lessen our restrictions on manga/manhwa that we allow in the database. Our manga moderators spend a huge amount of time already maintaining the current list. That's not to say they couldn't handle more (go manga mods go!) but we have to draw the line (PUNS) somewhere?
Basically if they'll start making exceptins then users will start crying that "you added X but why don't you want to add Y?" and if they'll remove that restriction then mods will be flooded with bunch of crap that nobody wants to deal with.

That statement justifies the line itself, but not where it is drawn

So, the issue is manpower. Well, I cannot force recruitment of more mods if the management is confident that they wouldn't be able to handle it. I mean of course, it's just one person - Kineta. Whether they will feel like expanding the whole zone, management and workers will have to expand in quantity.

Now, are they capable or even want to tackle such a project expansion is something they would know how to answer better. The positive results would be evident.

i wish they put Sweet Guy in myanimelist database so i can keep track of the chapters i am reading , i dont think "Reason: Your submission was denied because it is an unpublished webtoon." is a valid reason to not put this amazing Manhwa.

It's a voluntary position. They could use another recruitment round all around though.

And I think it is the slippery slope argument. There used to be a lot of web comics in the database but what counted as "anime/manga" enough to count was questionable. So, when stricter rules were put in place (before Webtoons really became a thing) they were all removed.

But if Webtoons were added, then why can't any other web comic be allowed? I mean when you get down to it, that is what they are.

You might argue that is a dumb reason, and that is fair enough. I do hope at some point the guidelines are re-evaluated in the future as obviously the scene has changed a lot in the last several years.

its like a country decide to legalize heroine but not marijuana
heroine users would be like "thats fair , gj president"
but marijuana users would be like "wtf president marijuana is more healthy than heroine why legalize that instead of marijuana".
so to be fair you either legalize everthying or you just ban everthying
in this case i think they should chose the first option.

And why can't they? They can, and they should. I don't see any reasons why not add every professional and amateur Japanese, Korean and Chinese web comic in existence to the DB

That's what I mean - recruit more voluntary mods. If the current amount is not enough, recruit ten times as much, twenty times, fifty times, five hundred times as much - however much is needed so that they start adding every webcomic to the DB there is

They dont do it because there are thousands of them. However I think the most popular should be allowed within reason.

2 manga mods that most likely just ported the database from MangaUpdates and didn't add every entry themselves.

i bet there are less missing stuff here than over there mal does not need a missing anime topic
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one
For the Union makes us strong

Not really since it leeches off of here, stuff is posted on the thread once it is added here

But i didn't bring it up to start a comparison of the databases (mal wins by far) just wanted to say it wouldn't require that much effort to maintain a webcomic database..

And those 2 mods wouldn't be able to handle the workload on MAL. That thread you mentioned only got around 400 replies in 2 years, that's the amount the Anime request thread got in 2 months.

The completed requests get cleaned from time to time, it reached like 1200 when there was no cleaning. But still, i get what you're saying and yeah it is a much smaller site compared to this giant but are translated Webcomics really that many? I think they would do fine doing just those since the number is probably less than 100

People would want untranslated webcomics to be added too if translated ones get accepted since manga get the same treatment.

It's written right there - because it's unpublished and thus does not comply with the Manga Database Guidelines
