In my opinion, dubs are usually inferior to the original Japanese audio. Rarely, it's equal. I adore the Full Metal Panic dubs. I also found it interesting that, in one Fumoffu episode, Kaname's Japanese voice actress was so enthusiastic in her yelling that I swear I could hear the echo of the room. Which is awesome.

Many times, I find the original to be better. And there are also a lot of cases where I've been disappointed with a dub ( like the prince of tennis? that was enough to give a child nightmares. )
For me it just feels like American voices don't have the same voice range as the Japanese do, and therefore makes it look much more... awkward on screen. The Japanese and their cute style and voices that have a wide range, and then there's us with our more mature and deep type.

Whether this is completely accurate or not, I'm not sure, but I know I read somewhere once that the seiyuu for Takayuki in Kimi ga Nozomu Eien stayed up for days on end to achieve the same insomnia his character was facing in order to play the part better.
That kind of dedication reallyreallyreally impressed me.

Not all dubs are bad though, they really aren't.
Miyazaki films were done well by Disney, but my favorite Disney dub is The Cat Returns. None of it sounded awkward, and Anne Hathaway did great as a VA.
BECK was one series that, in a way, I slightly preferred in English- all of the English lyrics in there sounded... strange in the Japanese, just to me. It felt like it meshed better in the dub, though there were voices in the original that couldn't be beaten.

Gundam 00's dub is one that I'm half-way with. The dubbing of Michael Trinity I found to be absolutely amazing (Michael, Haro, Saji wasn't so amazing as he was HILARIOUS to listen to). As are a few other voices in there. But to even it out, there are also the awful ones (Sumeragi, Allelujah, Tieria, Soma).

Basically, yeah, I think it's a coin toss, but with a higher probability on the original side.

Voice range isn't always a good thing. The voice actors in the Higurashi English dub have a huge range... from "Annoying" to "Oh God Just Kill Me And Get It Over With."

i usually prefer the origional japanese audio over the english dubs based on my preferences. the only exception where i like dubbed over subbed is like when i first watched dragonball z in its origional audio. i just couldnt get used to their voices so dubbed was a plus there. besides that i would usually watch anything subbed

I don't have a preference unless Todd Haberkorn, or Brad Swaile is involved. Then I would rather choke on a thousand needles then watch it in English.

In my opinion, the only good anime in english dub is Cardcaptor Sakura.

I kind of hope your kidding, because Cardcaptor Sakura is probably one of the worst examples of a dub especially when you consider all the editing, name changes, removal of the original soundtrack, etc. Series dubs like the Cowboy Bebops dub, FMA Dub, and Ghibli dubs far surpass it in quality and are good examples of how a dub should be.

Not trying to bash your opinion but the Cardcaptor dub really wasn't that good.

I suppose she may have seen the Animax dub, although that was only broadcast in Asia, afaik.

Or the utterly amazing dub of the second movie from Geneon.

Out of habit I watch subbed, but there are a lot of really good dubs out there. Of course, it's usually for A-list titles only, but I'll take what I can get.

I watched all of samurai champloo in dub... i really liked mugens dubbed voice, i tried watching a sub version but i didnt like it as much.

oddly enough, i watched cowboy bebop and couldnt stand spikes dubbed voice, and just watched the subbed versions because i thought that voice fit the character more.

When I watch series on DVDs (which aren't so many) -- I set them to English ... so that ... I can just listen and seldom watch. But still be able to pay attention to 'em. If I miss anything, that's fine. I'll just watch 'em all over again. After all, I paid for them. Right?

Dubs generally have second, third, or fourth rate voices that don't match the characters. There are some exceptions like "Kodocha" and some others, but I have to watch anime in the subbed version. Dubs are my last resort. It startles me the number of people who don't care about the seiyuu...

I watch all my anime in raw Japanese because that's the way it was originally made. I have nothing against English dubs or anime in any other language, and I'm sure some are quite well made, but to me it would be like watching a completely different show.

Yes, this. I'm pretty sure majority of the users on MAL have Japanese Seiyuus on their favorite people list and care about them. BUT some of us also care about the English voice actors too :/

I prefer japanese - even if i don't understand - because english actors cannot give back the atmosphere of an anime.

For example: watch Yu Yu Hakusho, where the english is TERRIFING !!!

I like to stick to original voices. Not saying that dubs are bad, but I just want to watch the "true voice" version.

Depends on the anime, if the anime was based in Japan i would watch it in Japanese. I watch my anime dubbed occasionally, such as when i'm feeling too lazy to read or when the Japanese voices get irritating. I don't understand why some people can hate dub so much, in the end it's just a translation.

I was tempted to say yes. But some Hellsing Ultimate OVA's have a few dubbed episodes and i rly like them. But there some famous ppl doing the voices. But normaly i would take japanese over some dubbed ep's.

No. Black Lagoon was a good dub, quite good in fact, however Revy's English VA sucked. You can't call a dub better when they give the lead character a crappy voice.

With my experiences so far I would say go for the original..in most cases it seems like the Japanese put more "Ummph" into their voice overs...and listening to a language different than your own is always fun too.

Though I've noticed that if the Anime doesn't take place in Japan and instead like space or France for example... Dubbing is possible to get away with.

There may be cases out there with a better dub than the original, but generally EVERYTHING, not only anime, is always better in its original language. There is a quite simple reason to this too: In an original version the whole series is more based around the voice acting than in a dub.

It's really hard whether or not to say it's actually better in different languages. In my opinion it all comes down to bias, which is perfectly A-okay. For me, whatever I start an anime in will likely be how I enjoy it the most.
