| When I began watching One Piece, there were a lot of people saying that "nakama" is an important word to the series and that it shouldn't be translated. Upon doing research about the word itself, I found this to seem kind of like bullshit. I feel there's plenty of different ways to translate it and still have it carry the same meaning in English. I feel like my favorite way it can be translated is to the word "companion" This carries both the meaning of dedication to each other, as well as the friendly nature of the relationship. I feel like "comrade" is also good in some instances, but seems to carry more of a serious tone than a friendly one. Unfortunately, too often, "nakama" simply gets translated as "friend", despite the meaning of the word being very different from "tomodachi". What does everybody else think about the word "nakama"? Do you think it's something that should be translated? What would you translate it to? |

| i think finding good friends in real life is nearly impossible just few days ago this guy that i know for few months tells me that he doesnt care about anyone else and he only cares about his own fun and well being so nakama is a thing of fiction and anime, im slowly beginning to understand that my views of how friendships should be are not the same as other people's views |

I think you'll find that most people in life are perfectly fine just being "tomodachi" with others, but I've definitely seen people out there that make a commitment to one another and become "nakama", so to say. These things typically take more than a few months to develop, though. Well, unless you're in the army or something, I hear people become really close really quickly there. |

I was always under the impression that it's as much a friendship as it is that you're teaming-up with the person. I'd consider "buddy" or "pal" to be more equivalent to "tomodachi" than "nakama", personally... Ah, ally is another good one! All good translations. :) I was mostly just arguing that they're wrong for not translating it, since it's supposed to be an English fansub. Keeping honorifics is one thing... because the alternative is basically just leaving them out altogether... but keeping full words like this untranslated I just feel is doing a disservice to the people who just want to watch a show for entertainment, instead of using a show as a teaching tool. |

It's also dependent on the way people think of others, just like "ore"/"boku"/"(w)atashi" is about how you think about yourself. In any case "nakama" are people who are teamed up under circumstance. They can be friends through this, but tomodachi and nakama are different existences. They can coexist.
