Same here. I don's see the need for giving a gradation of score for something that I don't see as a good show or have a redeemable qualities, so I use 5 for a placeholder for everything from average to horrible show.

5 means average so anything higher is kind of good. I usually put animes that I expect to be average or below average on hold and finish other things first so most of my scores are quite high

Well considering 5 is average i'd say a 6 rating for most anime is logical. Many people including my former self think that 7 is average ( for some random reason ). And giving a 5 rating isn't bad. It just means that it's not bad and not good. I remember i used to always give everything a 7. Even horrible stuff i would give no lower than a 5.

Aside from using 5 as "average", I try to keep my enjoyment of a series out of my scoring as much as I can. Even if I don't enjoy a series, I try and keep watching if I think it'll get better -- that's what I did with Yuri Kuma Arashi and Aldnoah.Zero. But there's also just a lot of bad anime, y'know? If it's just bad, I drop it. All of that said, anything rated 6+ on my list is something I'd recommend.

I honestly have no idea how people who have watched more than 100 series and rate most of them with under 5 scores can force themselves to keep watching anime. They must have a pretty boring life.

I mean, you spend 12 years in school, not counting preschool, kindergarten, and college, so why shouldn't I use the grading scale I've been using for as long as I can remember?

Maybe because some of us never used this scale in our school? Just 0-10. Always. I only used what you're saying on The Sims.

----

As others have said my rating is: 1-4 bad, 5-10 good.
Anyway, I don't get either those who have watched like 200 animes and just 10 of them are rated above 5. Why do you watch anime then? Like... do anything else instead? You can read books, watch movies, etc. I don't know but I don't care, because: first, to each his own, and second, I don't usually give high ratings to films either but I like to watch movies.
But I can understand why some of them watch an anime even if they think this anime is bad. I mean, I've watched some too because if it's short (12 episodes or less) and it doesn't happen something unbearable I rather prefer to finish the series. Because what if...? But maybe I'm a masochist or something, I've watched some really really really bad movies on purpose, because they're bad, really bad.

Gee, can't help that I need to watch something first before determining whether I'll like it or not. And I'm a completionist, so I'll watch it to the very end or put it on-hold.

My rating scale is simply different from mal's.
8 = great
7 = v. good
6 = good
5 = average
4 from downwards is terrible.

I don't follow it loyally though, some shows I might rate using mal's scale. It's arbitrary and I can't help it. My manga rating are less harsh, pls.

People really take into consideration and think really hard on how to score something. 5 is pretty average, but anything below it- err, well, bad.

Some people see anime (and manga) different from how others see it, so it's not like they wanted to rate it high or low.

Not like they're trying to bring the average score up or down, they just grade differently, and that's that.

Some are critical viewers, they take anime seriously. I don't see any problems with that. I enjoy seeing films, tremendously, but I mostly give out a 7, because films nowadays especially from Hollywood are shit, just because it takes a great amount of effort for some writing or characters, or the humour, drama, setting etc, to wow me and make it more than average. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy seeing films at all. Same rule applies to anime.

For me :

10: Masterpiece (with very few small flows - nothing's perfect)
9: Incredible anime that's just not quite on masterpiece level
8: Great anime
7: Good anime
6: Decent anime, above average, below being good (could be due to various flaws and so on)
5: Average
4: Pretty bad
3: Bad
2: Terrible!
1: Absolutely awful, complete waste of time that I'll never get back (I also refuse to drop anime so if it's long, I'm screwed)

I also rate based on my enjoyment which is affected by plot holes, characters, animation, style, story etc which is far from being objective but rating stuff entirely objective is silly in my opinion.

5 is "average" or "not good and not bad" or "equal good and bad"
For me, 5 is still plenty watchable and even enjoyable

4 is "below average". I don't like that MAL labels this as "bad", so I use my own scale. 4 is still watchable!

3 is "almost watchable" or "better than generic" 3 is in my drop zone.

2 is "generic" or "no reason to watch". This doesn't mean they are terrible. It just means I don't care to watch them.

1 is "unwatchable"

0 is for everything that doesn't even make it on to my list. I operate under the assumption that most anime is garbage. My score distribution more or less matches this.

6=Above Average, 7=Good, 8=Very Good, 9=Excellent, 10=Masterpiece
These are pretty obvious.

Most anime that I "try" ends up in the 2-6 range, with at least half of the potentials getting dropped. I really have to enjoy something to even consider giving it a 7, let alone something higher.

It's either because their rating system works like that, or they really care about finishing every anime they started, even the ones they don't like. And that results in rating them a 6. On a 1-10 scale, 6 is not that bad actually.

To me 6 is "not bad". The rating literally has the word "Fine" right next to it. That means I enjoyed it. Even if it may or may not have multiple issues. What I don't understand is why you think a 6 is bad.

even if i think anime wasn't good and rate it with a 4 or something it doesn't mean i didn't enjoy it

people are just too soft on anime and will rate anything that was somehow enjoyable with a 8 which stands for very good and not ok.

most of anime isn't very good, even if it's not bad to watch

I don't like forcing myself to finish anime that I don't find entertaining. Some people will finish an anime no matter what, but I don't understand that. Forcing yourself to finish a bad anime makes watching anime a chore, which it shouldn't be.

for some reason i honestly i did since it was i considered as not "humanity" like showing you how rap* can be with detail cronology in one episode, but they skipped the other scene based on manga. so the one who rate below 5 is definetly A KIDS, because they cannot control their emotion, yeah like me i guess...
