Me and Higashi are starting this (I believe hes going to be starting a bit later after he finishes Wolf's Rain). Anyone is welcome to join of course. As for pace, I think everyone should go at their own pace. I'm probably gonna stick to about 1 or 2 episodes a day depending on how busy I am. I might have some long stretches where I'm very busy and can't watch at all. If you have any input regarding pace make sure to voice it. Ep 1 [spoiler] So I have to say first of all this show is super colorful, despite how depressing the content is. I don't think I've seen the sky portrayed in so many different colors before. The animation is also great considering the time period (1977-1978). More so than what I remember for Joe and RoV anyway. So yeah just really impressed with the visuals overall. As for the other stuff, Remi seems like a nice kid and his mother very devoted. Feel really bad they had to sell off Roussette :(. As for the dad coming back at the end... Seems like kind of a deadbeat and can't even remember his own son =/ I guess he has gone through some terrible stuff with his injury and the trial... I like how the preview for the next ep pretty much spoils it XD Yeah I'm probably gonna be skipping those from now on. Anyway good start. Dezaki definitely delivers. |

Ep 2 [spoiler] So Remi was an orphan and lost his biological parents. It was awfully nice of the mother to take him in and I think I'm starting to see the father (Jerome's) viewpoint a bit more now. Especially considering he was working all the time he never really had that time to bond and get well attached to his adopted son. Either way hes still kind of an asshole though. Remi overhearing was pretty rough... I have no idea how I would react to that. Must be devastating, especially considering his age. Yeah looks like Jerome is gonna sell Remi... thats pretty messed up, but I think we all knew what kind of show this was gonna be. |

Ep 3 [spoiler] Holy visuals Dezaki o_O That dream sequence and all of those awesome still frames. Really I wasn't expecting this greatness in terms of visuals. Anyway I gotta say the super serious oldman in his odd outfit and all those cute animals create quite the odd contrast. I felt like Jerome was at least a bit relatable last ep but this ep he really gets painted as a villain. I guess it would have been worse if he just sold Remi to the old guy on the spot, instead of letting him see his mother one more time. The end-bit felt a little over-dramatic, but I guess it's fairly appropriate for this kind of show. |

Ep 4 Life on the road is pretty rough. My view of Vitalis is that he is stern, but fair. It was good that he didn't let the dog that tried to steal not have any food. I was really relieved when they finally found a place to stay in the night. This episode gave me the impression that in general the world can be a pretty shitty place, but sometime there are still good people. Ep 5 [spoiler] So Remi's first performance. I wish he played a more... dignified role though. Vitalis was really cutting it close with the money and giving Remi all those new clothes. I guess he really believe in him though. It seems like Remi was Pretty resistant/hesitant at first, but by the end of the episodes he looked like he was having a hell lot of fun. |

Ep 6 [spoiler] Another awesome dream sequence this episode. Great that Vitalis is also teaching Remi vital things like reading and writing. I did feel like it was kinda cheesy when the leaking ceiling spelled out Remi's name though lol. Also showing more of the harsher side of traveling with those stray dogs attacking. Also corporeal punishment o_O Most people are probably pretty turned off by this, but considering the time it was made (70's) it seems more than appropriate. I've received more than a few beatings when I did stupid shit as a kid myself. |

Episode 1 Yeah, the visuals totally blew me away, especially the artwork and backgrounds. Very colorful, particularly for an old cel animation show. And the cover being in B/W made it all the more surprising. Not sure if I'd say the animation is that much better than other shows of that time period though, but the artwork sure impressed me. Some of my favorite shots: http://imgur.com/n5aCJIg,1RWdoFo,impWTbD,QU5u4YB,2I88Pg5,mEUe9kr,WtmIJYF The story started out happy but as usual with WMT shows it didn't last long. It was a fairly fast-paced episode overall (thinking back on how long the introduction phase took in Marco), but if that means the travel parts start earlier and last longer I'm all for it. The return of the father was definitely far from the positive moment Remi hoped for. These old children's books are always so cruel to their protagonist :(. Episode 2 It does make more sense now, but it also shows how much Jerome has changed from a young, hopeful and positive man to a bitter, self-loathing deadbeat. In the long run it's probably best for Remi not to be around him for much longer because domestic violence and abuse are not far-fetched with Jerome's personality. The old man is on the cover so he'll probably buy Remi, but I wonder if he's a good person or if the show will continue to be depressing. The visuals were very nice again as well, I liked how they intertwined his bad dream about being taken to orphanage with the scenes later in the episode when his father actually took him 'away'. Dream and Reality. And the 'prison' imagery from the dream also returned at the end of the episode. 1.http://i.imgur.com/VOUsekI.jpg 2.http://i.imgur.com/cLzLYCo.jpg Also the whole episode/anime does a great job at depicting Jerome as this lingering dark presence. Both with the sound effects/music and his character design and shading. He also always wears black which just adds to the impression. The dream sequence in general stood out for me by having some pretty creepy shots: http://i.imgur.com/I4IOxNJ.jpg Episode 3 I was too lazy to do screenshots this episode but yeah, the visuals keep being amazing. The parallells to Marco also increase with the traveling entertainer + monkey making their appearance. It was kinda sad how Remi was sold for like half the price of that cow earlier :/. I'm still not sure how to judge the old man, he seems pretty strict but so far he's been fairly understanding. Looking forward to finding out more about his personality. |

Glad to know your enjoying it so far :) Ep 7 I have a suspicion the play about the general is actually about Vitalis. It would also explain why he would have a connection with the king. He seems like kind of a stereotypical war hardened veteran. I guess he might also be the king in the story he mentioned to the general's son. Also dat GAR singing. Pretty amazing, good to know that he is teaching Remi as well. I'm really liking Vitalis more and more with each episode. Ep 8 [spoiler] I was kinda worried about Jean at first, but it luckily he turned out to be one of the good guys and was trying to get away from the guys that kidnap people. Not really much else to say, some great visuals as usual. The skies and clouds in this anime look really fantastic. |

Episode 4 I'm really liking Vitalis so far. It was a very good episode overall and did a good job of portraying their hardships on the road but also how that made them become closer. Despite all that happened it was still the most positive/lighthearted episode so far. I wonder what Remi will do to earn his keep though. The OP shows him with the harp but I doubt that's gonna be how he starts out since it takes a while to learn an instrument Episode 5 It's understandable that Remi wasn't too hyped about playing the role of an idiot servant, but I think it was an important first step for him. The feeling that he actually played an important part and earned his keep as well as learning that entertaining doesn't have to be embarassing. Like you said, at the end of the episode he seemed to enjoy himself and it felt like he had grown a bit. Good stuff. Episode 6 I really liked this episode. Remi being introduced to the worlds of letters, language, books and knowledge is pretty neat. I'm sure that'll come in handy later. And he's a quick learner too since they travel most of the time and he has nothing else to do. I did find the scene with the spanking quite abusive and unnecessary (some harsh words would have done the job just as fine) but yeah, it's the 19th century so it's to be expected. I'll leave it at that for today, but damn I'm really loving this so far and it's hard to stop. Dezaki is love, Dezaki is life. |

Episode 7 Great episode and it did a very good job at making me think about Vitalis' past. I honestly hadn't thought about it much before this episode because I was preoccupied with other stuff that was going on, but this episode raised my interest on various levels. The singing was the first thing, the conversation with the drunk the second and then there also was the story about the king. I'm thinking he might have been some famous opera singer or something since his voice is so awesome and it would also explain how he got to meet the King of Napoli. I hope we'll find out at some point. I definitely agree that Vitalis is more and more likable with each episode. At first they did a good job of portraying him as that ominous guy and I wasn't sure what kind of person he was, but as Remi gets to know him better the same goes for us viewers. Him mentoring Remi in all those various things is pretty heartwarming to watch. Reading, writing, singing, general wisdom. Remi is having some excellent education on the road. Episode 8 Yeah, initially I was worried that Jean might be involved with the child kidnapping they mentioned since he's obviously a criminal, but I was relieved when it was revealed that he isn't. Pretty intense episode with Remi getting lost like that in a dangerous environment, but luckily everything turned out well. I wonder if we'll see Jean again at some point. And the visuals are still amazing. Definitely up there with my favorite anime artstyles. Episode 9 I was surprised to see that was all that happened in Bordeaux since it's the first really big city they visited. Oh well, the landscapes were awesome so I'm okay with it ^^. It was cute to see Remi make his first friend and get so excited about it. And even though I didn't expect a positive outcome it was still pretty cruel and very condescending how her father treated Remi :/. I'm kinda anxious because so far this series has been more uplifting and heartwarming than I expected, but I'm pretty sure it's only a question of time until things start getting depressing :/. Episode 10 [spoiler] Damn, I shouldn't have talked about expecting this to get depressing -.-. This episode was very cruel. Of course it was kinda stupid that Vitalis ended up hitting that policeman, but man is he an asshole. I wanna punch him as well. I really hope this doesn't have any terrible consequences because it doesn't seem like Remi has any money left and at the moment they can't even pay the room so things don't look too bright. I wonder how long Vitalis will have to stay in prison and whether Remi can provide for himself and the dogs in the meantime. |

Episode 11 Oh man, I somewhat expected this kind of outcome but this episode still wrecked me. I wasn't too surprised that Vitalis has something to hide about his past but it really sucks that it had to come up during the trial. At least the innkeeper was fairly nice, but in the end Remi is alone in a city that won't allow him to perform and he doesn't even have enough money for one meal. I really wonder how he'll deal with that. I sincerely hope the next couple of episodes bring some hope back into the show because this one was just too depressing :(. Episode 12 This episode was so mean :(. The show is really trying to break my heart. Just when I thought there would be some hope when he attracted a crowd in the evening after the hostile encounter with that ugly clown in the other village, another cop comes around and ruins everything. I was literally thinking 'this is so rewarding right now because of all the hardships of this and the past few episodes' when it all went down the drain. ACAB, for real. So they eat their last bread and have a very insecure future ahead of them. I seriously hope it gets a bit more uplifting next episode, I can't stop on such a sad note. Episode 13 [spoiler] The dream sequence was pretty sad but also good as always. And goddamn you Zerbino, always a troublemaker :/. But finally at the end of the episode some hope appeared in the form of that woman so I felt really relieved and can leave it at that for now. These last few episodes really were an emotional rollercoaster. |

Episode 14 YES. This was so rewarding to watch after the hardships they went through, it almost made the depressing episodes worthwile. I'm really not sure what to think about the sudden development/spoilers by the narrator regarding Remi actually being the kidnapped son of Mrs. Milligan. That kinda came out of nowhere and feels kinda forced/cheesy, and the way it was spoiled doesn't make it any better. Well, I guess I'll have to see where this goes. I'm worried about Vitalis health too since he didn't look all that good in the short scene we got to see of him this episode :/. Episode 15 [spoiler] Mostly a happy episode but you always have those short reminders of Arthur's condition to dampen the mood a little bit. Remi was a bit inconsiderate at the castle but I guess you can't blame him since he's still a kid. When Arthur's mom tried to force him to apologize after one of his rants the situation got a little uncomfortable for a while but they ended up making up and enjoying the book together so overall it was definitely another heartwarming episode. Vitalis had that cough again though :(. |

Ep 9 Yeah it seems like they might spend more time in larger cities. Anyway it was a nice experience for Remi to make a new friend and perhaps love interesting down the road? I think she is the one in the OP, but yeah who knows. What happened with her dad isn't surprising to me. I thought it was very big of Remi to throw away the money despite their financial situation. The bird imagery at the end of the ep was also very nice. Ep10 [spoiler] Dam I see what you mean about getting depressing. Wasn't expecting Vitalis to just explode on the cop like that. He fully deserved it though, he was just such a fucking ass. Atleast the inn keeper didn't pester Remi about the rent. I really hope Vitalis doesn't stay in jail for long. |

Episode 16 Another intense and emotional episode. I was kinda surprised that Remi blindly running out into the storm like that actually ended up helping a lot (though I guess Capi did most of the work ^^). Very nice. The obvious mother/child theme and imagery of this episode was also well done. Seems like next episode the heaven-like journey on The Swan will come to an end though. I wonder what comes after this. Episode 17 [spoiler] Oh man, this episode got me teary-eyed towards the end. No matter which decision was made it would have been both sad and sweet at the same time. The only compromise I could think of was Vitalis also joining life on The Swan and everyone living happily ever after, but I guess Vitalis has a point with what he said. He definitely got through to Mrs. Milligan. Poor Arthur though, he didn't even get to say a proper goodbye to Remi. I'm pretty sure that we'll see Mrs. Milligan again at some point thanks to all the spoilering/foreshadowing the narrator has done in these past episodes so for now I'm staying optimistic and will try to look forward to more traveling with Vitalis and seeing Remi grow more independent. |

Ep 11 Dat struggle... the struggle is indeed quite real. Vitalis' words really stuck with me "My dear son. My dear Remi, a man must learn to live on his own." The fact that he referred to Remi as his son was pretty touching in itself, but I feel like this message is really relevant in this day and age. I feel like men and just people in general seek out way too much external validation and don't know how to generate their own self-reliance and self-motivation. That's definitely been my experience to some extent anyway. Yeah great stuff. Especially the dream sequence near the start of the ep. Ep 12 [spoiler] .... I never liked clowns and heres just one more reason not to lol. The scene where he was getting the bread was so rough... Why couldn't that shopkeeper just give him 5 sous worth or just be nice and give him a loaf for 5. That innkeeper from the last few eps was a nice guy, but I guess hes an exception though. Another asshole cop too. I don't feel like Remi is going to catch a break for a long time. This is definitely giving me the same kind of vibes as the prison arc in Joe. |

Episode 18 This was mostly a sweet and lighthearted episode, but Vitalis health is definitely declining and it makes it hard to be optimistic about the future. Remi was still kinda hung up on The Swan which is understandable, but it seems like he finally got over it at the end of the episode. Aside from that it was a rather eventless episode, but that was nice in itself. Looking forward to Paris. Episode 19 Well, the episode title already spoilered the development at the end of the episode but damn, they really have some bad luck. I'm expecting tons of tragedy and possible deaths in this blizzard :(. And right after they encountered some nice people along the way for once. Episode 20 I didn't expect the wolves and tbh it was a bit silly how they laid that trap to intelligently, but nonetheless I was on the edge of my seat for most of the episode. Remi couldn't handle the responsibility yet and I guess Vitalis would have taken the watch himself if not for his declining condition. It was very sad to see Zerbino and Dolce die like this, but Zerbino's greed and lack of discipline was showcased a few times before so it's not that surprising. Poor Dolce though :(. I was immensely relieved that Capi survived at least and once more when they found Joli Coeur on that tree after he went missing. Very engaging episode with a sad conclusion but life goes on as they say and next episode seems to be a bit more uplifting so I'll look forward to it. Episode 21 [spoiler] This was one of the first episodes I didn't enjoy that much. Part of it is probably me being increasingly annoyed by the narrator/preview and especially the episode titles spoiling the main plot points of a lot of episodes. This episode lacked any tension since the title gave away that she would give birth and that there would be a happy end. But well, I guess it's nice that Remi was cheered up by the miracle of life and even got to name the calf after his old cow. On a sidenote I think he needs glasses. It's the 3rd or 4th time he's mistaken one thing for another :>. |

Episode 22 Holy shit why do you do this to me, show? :( I really didn't expect Joli Coeur to die like that before the episode started. That's some depressing stuff. He was basically the centerpiece of their performance too and without him it seems kinda lackluster and they'll have a hard time making money I guess. Damn, this really sucks, there's no other way to put it. Episode 23 This wasn't as depressing as the last episode but it was pretty uncomfortable to watch in its own way. Those decadent ladies didn't even give him a chance to show off his skills with the violin :/. Paris isn't really depicted as a warm and welcoming city so far, but I still enjoyed seeing it since in real life it's one of my favorite cities and I've been there a couple of times. And it also seems my earlier prediction that Vitalis used to be an opera singer of sorts seems to be validated by his acquaintance Marcano. Episode 24 I quite liked this episode. First of all more Paris fanservice with lots of different places being showcased, and secondly the interactions between Remi and Mattia were very enjoyable. Remi not taking shit from him was nice to watch and sharing some food instead of money is always a nice/good way to deal with beggars. Their fight about the pride of a traveling entertainer was also good and them parting ways while communicating with their instruments was a great scene as well. Since the OP shows Remi traveling with Mattia and Vitalis health seems to be declining further I'm fearing for the worst though :(. Episode 25 Damn, things are rapidly spiraling downwards again. Garofoli might just be the biggest asshole of the series so far (fighting over the spot with the cop that imprisoned Vitalis earlier). Those kids sure lead a harsh life. At first I was wondering how the hell Vitalis could leave Remi in the care of such a person especially considering his anti-begging philosophy, and I was so relieved when he took him with him at the end of the day. I guess Garofoli hasn't always been this cruel and bitter, otherwise Vitalis wouldn't be acquainted with him. I was ready to mourn the violin and flute but was very glad when Remi convinced Vitalis not to sell them after all. Still, they don't have money or a place to stay and Vitalis is definitely getting more and more sick. This isn't gonna end well. I just hope Remi doesn't end up staying with Garofoli at any point in time. Episode 26 [spoiler] Dear god this episode was so cruel and heart-wrenching that it made all the previous tragedy look like the best time of their lives. Every little glimmer of hope they encountered in Paris, and in this episode in particular, was immediately extinguished. It would still have been an extremely sad episode if their situation just kept being hopeless, but them looking for the quarry just fo find it locked, and then the snowstorm starting and that carriage ignoring Capi, it was hard to bear. It's not like I didn't see Vitalis death coming from the time he started to have that cough in prison, but the way it was executed was beyond my expectations. How the half-dead and blind Vitalis kept crawling through the snow, carrying Remi to protect him from freezing and then finally found a place where at least Remi could survive... Damn. I don't even wanna think about Remi's future prospects right now. I sincerely hope that this was the most depressing part of the series, I'm not sure how much more cruelty and tragedy I can handle :(. |

Ep 13 Zerbino was always pretty unruly, even when Vitalis was in change. I wasn't surprised that he started acting up more now that Remi is charge. The dream sequence was indeed pretty sad and also visually great. It looks like things are finally looking up for Remi. He sure as hell deserves it. Ep 14 [spoiler] This was pretty heartwarming. It's nice that Remi finally got a break with his "real" mom. I did think the Ms. Milligan being his real mom was also very cheesy too lol. Also glad Zerbino came back. I'm thinking Vitalis might die in prison at this rate... :( |

Episode 27 So they were that close to possible shelter when Vitalis finally collapsed and ended up dying :/. Obviously the aftermath of his death still made this episode quite sad, but the lively family that has taken in Remi managed to cheer him (and me) up a bit. Looking forward to a bunch of more heartwarming episode, hopefully. Episode 28 The drama in this episode seemed so petty/irrelevant compared to what we've been through already, but that's a good sign I guess. It was nice to see that farmer appreciating Remi's honestly and repaying him in kind when he found out that it wasn't actually Capi's fault. Sweet little episode. Episode 29 This episode started out being probably the most fun episode of the whole show so far, but it wouldn't be Ie Naki Ko if there wasn't some impending tragedy right around the corner after fast-pacing through the months of happiness :(. The sudden hail storm was another cruel twist of fate of this show. At this point it almost seems like Remi attracts misery :/. It seem hard to imagine them recuperating from that loss. Episode 30 This fucking justice system is a joke. How does anyone profit from Acquins being in jail where he can't work to repay his debt and isntead costs the government money. And 5 years too, holy shit. All because of a friggin' natural disaster. Insurance was definitely a good invention. It was sad to watch the kids being split up, but I guess it makes sense from a financial perspective. And Remi parting ways with them was kinda predictable at that point. His whole reaction/attitude was very inspiring though, also for the other family members. I really like the idea with the 'ring bond' he mentioned, I hope it works out as he planned it. I wonder if he can make a living with just himself and Capi though. Episode 31 [spoiler] This was a pretty positive episode, aside from the short encounter with those bullying drunkards. Remi got a pocket watch, a free map and he met Mattia again which was great. And it seems like they'll be traveling together from now on. Things are looking pretty good considering his situation. I hope they'll have some fun on their journey and that this show doesn't fill it with tragedy once again. |

Episode 32 Yes, this was the kind of episode I needed. Happy atmosphere (even the sad part about Mattia's mother got turned into something touching), they make an awesome team with Remi's experience and discipline and Mattia's business sense and creativity, and for a change they had a lucky streak on that wedding as well. 28 Francs really is a shitload of money going from the previous episodes. I'm not that big on them wanting to spend it all on a present for Remi's foster mom even though it's a sweet idea. I'm still worried about them starving or freezing once winter comes around. A cow definitely makes sense though and at least it means that they'll be saving up and not immediately spend it on something, which is good. Can't wait for the next episode, I hope they keep having fun on their travels. With the kind of money they have even some bad luck shouldn't wreck them, like it would have before. Episode 33 Another very enjoyable episode. Mattia's cheeky attitude is definitely coming in handy especially in terms of transportation. They're also lucky in terms of the people they encounter. They got a free monkey and that conductor that found them on the train was fairly nice about it as well. I found it a bit unrealistic how they boarded the train at full speed, but well. Seeing Alexis was nice as well even though the circumstances of his injury aren't that happy. I'm worried about Remi working the mine as well. Child labor is not a good thing :/. Episode 34 I liked the adventurous feeling of how Remi's first day in the mine was portrayed, but it was pretty obvious that something bad would happen by the end of the episode. The only thing making this not that hard to bear is that I'm sure Remi won't die or anything like that, so I'll just have to find out how this current disaster ends. Hopefully the old guy and Alexis uncle survive as well, but I'm not counting on it :/. Episode 35 [spoiler] Awww Yeah, everyone survived :D. Well, at least from Remi's group, there seemed to have been a lot of other casualties :/. Remi suddenly jumping into the water like that was a pretty rash decision and it almost killed him, but eventually it all worked out for the best. I found it a bit weird that they were about to stop pumping out the water since that's something they'd need to do anyway. I'm assuming they want to still use that mine after all. But it made for a very touching scene when Mattia kept going and motivated the chief not to give up, so I guess it's okay. |

Episode 36 Very nice episode. Mattia's musical genius has been hinted at before but it's great to have it confirmed now. Not sure if I should be sad or happy that he decided not to hone his skills further, but I guess from a viewers perspective it's better to see them continue to travel together. I really admired Remi's decision though. But it was probably all too sudden for Mattia. On another note I'm really enjoying all the antics of that mischievous 'new' Joli Coeur. He adds some great comedic value to the show. Episode 37 Whoa, when did they reach 100 Francs? Considering how much the troupe struggled when it was still Vitals & Remi + 4 animals they seem to be having an awfully easy time saving up that much money. Not that I'm complaining, it just seems a little weird. It was great to see Joli Coeur finally be part of a performance, and it made them tons of money as well. I started sweating when the cop accused them of theft, but luckily it all ended well. I like how this show reversed the formula from hinting at hope and then extinguishing it to hinting at danger and then make it go away. I'm still worried though, maybe his mom doesn't live there anymore or something happened to her. The cow might die or get stolen as well. The show was just so cruel early on that I'm always expecting something bad to happen :>. Episode 38 [spoiler] This went so much better than I expected. His mom was there, Jerome wasn't, everyone is happy and he even got information about his real parents. And I guess that also means Jerome has stopped being a huge asshole since he's looking for them? There doesn't seem to be any profit in it for him with Remi supposedly gone already so that's how I interpret it. Now if only the narrator hadn't spoiled the part about his real family early on :/. But I'm still looking forward to hopefully meeting Mrs. Milligan and Arthur again in the future. |

Episode 39 Well, so Jerome didn't change and is just after the money after all. I should've known. Very fast-paced episode but I guess it makes sense since he's in a hurry to meet his real parents now. I would have loved to see more time with Lise though, Remi x Lise is just too cute <3. Getting more backstory on the child kidnapping story was interesting, but it's probably still my least favorite part of the story. It just feels like a bit too much, but well. Episode 40 That was a pretty touching episode and a sad but also somewhat nice conclusion to Jerome. I wouldn't say he redeemed himself, but it was nice to see Remi come to terms with his 'father'. And now their next goal is england. I have to say I'm pretty excited about that, looking forward to them crossing the ocean. I always love sea travel so it should be fun. I just hope everyone gets a happy end at this point, both Remi and Mattia. Episode 41 I definitely didn't expect that kind of plot twist. At first glance the Driscolls seemed like decent people and I thought maybe it was an honest misunderstanding, but by the end of the episode it became pretty clear that they are up to something bad. I still don't know what would possess them to 'steal' some ranodm kid from France though. My best bet is that they were involved with kidnapping him as a kid and now want to get some ransom from the rich Milligan family or something. I just hope nothing too bad happens to Remi & co. The scene with Remi and Mrs. Milligan not seeing each other because of the fog despite passing closely to each other, was bittersweet once again. I guess it's still gonna take a while until they finally meet again. Episode 42 This arc is just making me love Mattia even more. He figured out that the kidnappers must know about Remi's real faily and gave Remi a new purpose after the disappointment that were the Driscolls. He also realized they were being followed and almost managed to trick that stupid guy into spilling the name of Remi's family. Overall this part of the story is turning out to be much more fun than I initially expected since now it's Remi & Mattia tricking them and not the other way round. Looking forward to see more of that. And seeing how goofy the Driscolls are I'm not that worried about the two. In fact I'm surprised they haven't been caught before. They don't seem to be particularly bright. Episode 43 [spoiler] I shouldn't have been so optimistic about their plan :/. But to be fair they only got discovered because of Joli Coeur's mischievousness which was responsible for that 'acciden't that woke up the Driscoll guy. Still, at least they confirmed that Mrs. Milligan is Remi's real mother, which was a nice moment in the story. Especially the way Mattia tricked them again :>. I also had to lol at the guy punching through the door xD. In any case now all that's left is for them to escape and I hope they manage that before things get ugly. |

Episode 44 Exciting episode especially the escape parts of course. Mattia is great and his buddies were awesome as well on their bikes. But Mrs. Milligan meeting Benjamin made me way too happy. Both because seeing Benjamin again and being reminded of how nice Remi's time on the swan was. And now they'll go see Lise and probably find out about Remi's plan to look for his real parents. The plot is thickening! Episode 45 Those thugs on the boat got rekt by Capi, which was great. I lost count of how often Capi protected/saved Remi at this point. The secret here of the show! Not that it made a difference in the end though :/. I thought it was bad enough that he got caught but when the police raided the place and arrested them all the ACAB feels from the early episodes came back. Cops in this show are just horrible so I'm not too optimistic about next episode :(. Episode 46 I wasn't disappointed by the asshole-ness and incompetence of that 'veteran inspector'. At first he didn't even bother to look up the family register of the Driscolls and when he did he kinda easily believed the thug leader over Remi even though his story didn't make much sense. Also since they allegedly investigated the Driscolls for ten years already (seeing how stupid they are that doesn't speak highly of the cops abilities too btw) wouldn't they have noticed that Remi had never been with them before? Remi could have been a bit more resourceful as well. He could mention the lawyer that found him who could potentially support his story. Seeing Lise again was a delight though, but sadly overshadowed by Remi being in prison. Episode 47 This latest drama arc does seem a bit over-the-top, but it's very exciting nonetheless. They almost had it all covered on their escape plan, except that mischievous monkey once again -.-. And since they have officially become criminals now that they helped Remi escape (even if he was innocent before, now he isn't) there's a lot of tension concerning their potential capture. I hope this ends well! I'm going for the finish tomorrow! |

Episode 48 Two times this episode Remi and Mattia escaped the potentially deadly force of water. I think those parts could have been handled a bit more slow-paced and fleshed out, but it was still a very enjoyable episode for me. I loved Hawthorne and would have loved to see more of him though. He vaguely reminded me of Gray from Takarajima, one of my favorite characters. Which is why I got a bit pissed at Mattia for his ungrateful and antagonizing attitude, but Hawthorne was very mature about it and at the end they kinda made up so that was nice. Patricia x Joli Coeur was also a nice touch in this episode ^^. Episode 49 Since the end is drawing near every scene seems emotional to me right now. Remi and Mattia meeting Benjamin and his uncle like that was a stroke of luck and I enjoyed seeing them work on the farm for their money. And at the end of the day the uncle paid their train fee for them, which was a nice touch. The highlight of the episode was the scene between Remi's 'two mothers' after it was confirmed that Remi = Richard. Very touching. It's a shame that Arthur's sickness forced them to go ahead, but I'm optimistic that it's only a temporary setback for their reunion. Hopefully. Episode 50 This was one of the most beautiful episodes of the whole show for me, which is saying a lot. It might even be my favorite. So many emotions. Mainly happiness but with a hint of melancholic sadness. The reunion(s) were great to see, I especially loved the Remi x Lise moment when she started to speak. It was just great and so satisfying to watch! And the great thing is that I still can't predict how this will end. It was hinted that Remi might have a hard time choosing between his mom and his foster mom, and the future of Mattia and Lise are also insecure at this point. I can't imagine them being seperated. I can't wait to see which path this show is going to take in the last episode. Episode 51 This was just too good. Remi and Mattia both found a happy home and even Remi's mother was invited, and their times of happiness in Switzerland were heartwarming especially watching Arthur slowly regaining the ability to walk. Still despite all that I wasn't that surprised about their decision, especially after the tribute to Vitalis earlier in the episode. I guess it kinda sucks for Arthur and Mrs. Milligan, but I'm sure they both understand that the two weren't ungrateful. The small glimpse into their future combined with 'we don't know what happened to them on their second journey' was just a perfect, short kind of epilogue for this series. I don't even know what else to say. This is the 1700th anime entry I completed and it might just be the show that both made me more sad and more happy than any other show before it. The characters and emotions in this show were just amazing from start to finish. 10/10 without a second thought. Holy shit that was amazing. I'll need to edit my favorites now. |

Ep 15-16 [spoiler] 15 was a nice heartwarming episode. This arc is pretty nice in general. Ofcourse Arther's disease is always something looming ahead. The mother/child theme in ep 16 was quite nice. Kind of sadder, because of the disease, but Remi going out to get the medicine was pretty great. Also yeah mostly just Capi doing the work... He could have gotten really hurt. Good on Capi for getting the medicine back. |

Ep 17-18 [spoiler] Lol spoilers in the episode title. Gotta love 70's anime. I see that the train was foreshadowing for Vitalis' return. Really glad for him to be back and that he didn't die in prison or get into more trouble. Reunion as well as farewell were pretty heartwarming. Looks like Vitalis has a bad case of anime disease :( With no known cure, things don't look too good. It's great to see Vitalis and Remi back on the road. Looks like Remi is still thinking of the Swan though. Hopefully we get to see Ms. Milligan and Arthur sometime later again in the series. The play about the general dying in the proces of rescuing his son feels like foreshadowing to me :( |

Ep 19-20 [spoiler] Goddamit Zerbino!I knew the show had to start getting depressing at some point... I agree that this sort of thing was kind of expected for Zerbino, because of his previously shown greed, but Dolce really didn't deserve this >_< I kind of wonder if this was inspiration for that Liam Neeson movie "They Grey" though. These last two eps were really downers though. I hope things start to look up again soon. |

Ep 21-22 [spoiler] FML Man... this is just too much T____T Joli Coeur too? The family with the cow that Reminded Remi of Roussette was nice, but ep 22 was just too sad. I guess the play was not forshadowing Vitalis' death, but actually Joli Coeur. Yeah just... too sad. I really really hope this things start looking up again. |

Ep 23-24 [spoiler] Wow... Paris is not exactly the City of love that I imagine, atleast not in this anime. Vitalis seemed to be some sort of famous performer I'm guessing either a violinist or opera singer. Those bourgeoisie women were fucking awful. I really feel like Marcano should have insisted on letting them hear Vitalis' playing. Marcano seems like a nice guy though, especially considering he was a former apprentice of Vitalis. I hope we get to see more of him. Vitalis "anime disease" seems to be progressing... atleast hes not coughing up blood yet. I'm pretty sure that would be TB (tuberculosis). Mattia and his crew are interesting. This is just anecdotal, but there are a lot of beggars where I live and most of them just panhandle, but there are some performers and artists downtown especially. I remember this one guy in particular who did these amazing chalk drawings, I don't think he does that anymore though, but I remember giving to that guy quite a few times. Theres also a aboriginal guy that does paintings. I feel like these kind of people at the very least Have some direction in their lives and won't just blow the money on booze and drugs. Anyway looks like more bad news... but I shouldn't be surprised at this point lol. |

Ep 25-26 [spoiler] Wow Garofoli is a fucking monster. I mean I suspected he was pretty shitty to begin with, but wow whipping kids and not giving them food. Also nice to see Matia again. We'eve been getting death flags for Vitalis for a while now... I honestly don't think hes gonna make it more than a few more episodes >_< I'm so glad he got Remi the hell out of Garofoli's house that place was wretched. I'm glad he didn't end up selling the violin and flue too... idk if those happy days of traveling and performing are ever going to return though. This show just never stops getting more depressing. I don't even know what to say, this is too sad. I want things to get better. Please get better Q__Q |

Ep 27-28 I guess I should elaborate more on how I thought Vitalis' death was handled. I have to agree that the little rays of hope had a much greater effect than just simply being hopeless all the way. I mean I knew Vitalis was not going to last, after it was clear he had lost his vision and his body had weakened to such a degree his time was up. Really since his deteriorating health in the prison the death flag was there. As much as I wished that he could have swallowed his pride and revealed himself as Carlo the famous opera singer to get a job, at the very least for Remi's sake, I realize that he simply couldn't forsake his pride. Vitalis was GAR to the core, even sacrificing himself in order to keep Remi and Capi alive. One of those characters you can truly look up to and be inspired by. Learning about the truth of Vitalis' past and Remi's reaction were very touching. As for the Aquins family they seem like a really nice bunch. I imagine the mother died at some point... perhaps giving birth to Lise since death at childbirth is not uncommon during this time. I knew Capi wasn't the one that ruined the crops, it was good to see Remi take responsibility and I feel like it really shows how he has grown as a character. Looking forward to some more happy times with the Aquins. Ep 29-30 Just like that the brief moments of happiness end. All because of a freaking hail storm. I really liked the Aquins family. They were really nice respectable folks that didn't deserve something so awful to happen to them. I'm also really glad insurance was invented going to jail for 5 years because of something out of your control is ludicrous. It was pretty painful watching the family being torn apart and Remi having to leave them. I wonder if he'll ever see any of the family again. At the very least maybe he'll see Lise. I also really enjoyed how he handled things. I guess he's used to this sort of thing now. Tragedy seems to follow him everywhere, but Remi is growing into a fine man and following in the footsteps of Vitalis. The whole bond ring thing was also a nice sentiment. I hope they can actually meet up again. Also I'm liking the new bits of OST it's got somewhat of a funky 70's vibe to it lol. Visuals are ofcourse on point as usual. I especially liked that scene of the hail breaking through the glass. Ep 31-32 "A journey is a man's dream". I really like this coming of age theme and Remi going from a boy to a man. The book seller was a nice guy in general. I wasn't too surprised to see Mattia appear again (dam you spoilerly 70's ops lol). It's nice to see that Rem and Mattia are adjusting to their new life on the road. Mattia seemed kind of reluctant at first, but he seems to be enjoying himself now. The performance at the wedding was pretty fantastic too. It's great that they were able to make a nice sum of money. I guess they couldn't understand that 28 francs couldn't get them a cow though. I look forward to meeting Remi's step mom again. I hope they don't sacrifice too much to have to make that money though. Ep 33-24 Lol just randomly finding that monkey was way too convenient, but this is based on an old children's book (iirc) so can't fault it that much. The train guy was nice to let them go without punishment. It's good that the new Joli Coeur listens to Capi. Nice to know that Alexis wasn't hurt too badly. Coal mine work sounds really rough. Remi is just too nice of a guy deciding to take over for Alexis. The family seems nice though, so hopefully this part of the story isn't too bad lol. Remi seems to be having fun with his new job, the new Joli Coeur seems to be getting a long better too. This arc honestly doesn't seem to be as bad as I thought. Mattia is turning out to be a great friend too. Ofcourse nothing good lasts for long in this show. That flood was pretty unexpected. I wasn't really worried about Remi since hes the main char and all, but all those other miners and maybe even Capi or Mattia getting involved would be awful. Ep 35-36 I'm glad to see the coal mining arc didn't end on a low note. Alexis and his uncle were pretty nice. The guys at the mine were lots of fun too, especially the old master. Remi saving those guys was great to see too. I was afraid Mattia might leave the group, but fortunately he didn't go with the musician guy. His special talent is a is nice to know about too. Not much else to say. Ep 37-38 [spoiler] It was great to see Joli Coeur the second finally pull off a great act. I have to say it was pretty interesting. Never heard of flying monkeys before. I was scared they were gonna get arrested by the cop but the veterinarian guy really saved them. He even helped them pick out a great cow. The reunion with Mrs. Barberin was really touching too. I'm glad she still kept all his clothes and nothing awful happened a long the way. I was scared Jerome was gonna be there, but even he was away looking for Remi's real parents. Looks like we're gonna be seeing Mrs. Milligan again real soon. |

Ep 39-40 [spoiler] Lol so Jerome is just after the money. I feel like he was a good guy at some point, because he atleast had the humanity to pick up Remi as a baby. Learning the backstory of how Remi was abandoned was pretty interesting too. Lise was great too. I agree it would have been nice to spend some more time with her. The carriage race was a nice light-hearted touch. I'm surprised they manged to get to Paris so fast. Jerome's final redemption was really nice to see. I could see that Mattia could see a lot of himself in Jerome too and defying his perceived fate really make the episode ever better. The fireworks were a nice touch too. Looking forward to England! |

Ep 41-42 Things seemed to be going really smoothly they even got a lot of extra money from Jerome, and even though they had to sleep on the deck atleast Remi got to see a glimpse of his real mother and brother. Of course things don't always turn out perfect in this show. The Driscol's are a slimy bunch. At the very least they haven't abused Remi and Mattia though, but they seem to have caught on pretty quickly. I'm just worried that when they make their escape they're gonna be broke cause they took their money. Ep 43-44 Things started to look pretty grim once they got found out for finding the insignia. Nothing comes easy in this show I guess. I'm just glad no one was seriously injured I was getting kind of worried for Capi a little. Figuring out that Mrs. Milligan was his mom was a great moment for Remi. As much as I want to fault this show for a lot of these very convenient circumstances like meeting his mother randomly beforehand, I really did feel like it added a lot to the story in the end. Mrs. Milliagan's encounter with another one of the Aquins siblings (Benjamin) was quite nice as well. It's good that Remi managed to get away from the Driscols, but Mattia still ended up getting captured. Luckily Bob was there to help out Remi too and he was able to be quickly rescued. I hope Mrs. Milligan and Arthur turn around to go back to England soon. Ep 45-46 [spoiler] Dezaki sure loves sending his characters to prison eh? Nothing comes easy in this anime. The old guy in the cottage was really nice, but Remi still ended up getting re-captured now Im not sure whats worse getting caught by the police or the Driscols. You weren't kidding about all the cops being assholes lol. With the Driscols they would eventually have to give him back to the Milligans to get their reward, but now hes heading off to juvenile prison. Also more Lise was much appreciated. Arthur's leg surgery in Switzerland means that Remi is not going to be able to meet his mother for awhile. There not too many episodes left though, so hopefully everything gets resolved soon. |

Ep 47-48 They would have made a clean getaway if it wasn't for Joli Coeur fooling around on top of the wig. I guess they wouldn't have been able to get the message to Remi without his help though. The luggage rats were pretty funny too. I really wish Bob and the rest of Mattia's old circus troupe was introduced into the story beforehand. They were really helpful and would have been a great help during those tough times on the road. Hawthorne was pretty great too, too bad he was around for only about half an episode =/ I thought it was kind of weird for Mattia to get confrontational like that. I kinda blamed it on the seasickness I guess. Ep 49-50 Mrs. Barberin and Mrs. Milligan's meeting was really touching. I can't imagine how happy she must have been to find her son after so many years and how grateful she must have felt toward Mrs. Barberin. The apple farm was alright too, good on the uncle for giving them some extra money. Too bad the Milligans have to go to Switzerland so soon though, if they stayed a little longer Remi would make it to Chavanon. Btw did they just throw in a reference to Haha wo Tazunete Sanzenri? I need to watch that at some point. Need me more Takahata in my life. Lise finally being able to talk was pretty amazing too. I guess it isn't too surprising since she could talk before and the vocal cord damage has been healed. Really looking forward to the finale and Remi's reunion with his mother. Ep 51 [spoiler] This finale man... this is everything I wanted from the show, even them going to forge their own path. Honoring the words and memory of Vitalis just was too perfect. Despite all the hardships that they faced during the first half the show, those episodes where they just trying to make a living and survive until the next day were my favorite. Even when tragedy struck Remi never forgot his masters words to keep moving and "March Forward" and of course that "A man must learn to live on his own". It was because of all of the pain Remi and Mattia suffered through that made their happiness all the more rewarding. You shouldn't just have happiness given to you on a silver platter, you need to earn it on your own. The Epilogue was a great cherry on top to let us know that everything turned out great for them in the end. I was gonna give this show a 9/10 if they just stayed with Mrs. Milligan and, because of all the coincidences near the end, but the fact that they honored Vitalis and decided to rely on themselves instead of falling into the lap of luxury just makes this so much better. 10/10 Based Dezaki. |
