Anime with Mature Characters

So basically I'm looking for an Anime with characters that actually behave realistically and mature, like the characters in Ao Haru Ride for example, but it doesn't have to be strictly romance.

Really getting sick of seeing the same old 'moe' archetypes in every damn show...

In addition to those already mentioned:

- Nana
- Noein
- Crest of the Stars (and sequels)

Although Nana is the only one there that's mainly drama and romance, these themes do play a big role in the other two as well, and all three overall have some very believable, mature and well thought out characters (Nana especially).

Although I like Noein and recommend it here frequently, I don't think it has many mature characters. The Lachryma folks are adults, but they largely don't have adult concerns or motivations beyond some wistful romantic yearnings. The most maturely drawn characters are Haruka's parents and Yuu's mother. The scene when Haruka visits the Tokyo apartment, and the inebriated breakfast shared by the mothers, are the scenes that felt most "mature" to me.

I still think everyone should give Noein at try at some point, though.

Zetsuen no Tempest? Weird-ass story but Takigawa Yoshinon and Fuwa Aika are sure as hell not part of the moe part of anime. If there are any type of cliches in the anime, its somewhere around episode 14-17.

seconding Zetsuen no Tempest, the main char can act completely calm and hide his real emotions really well. the other dude doesn't give an ef and just wants revenge, but doesn't go at it blindly, he knows what strings he has to pull to get what he wants. All the other side/main ish characters also understand what they want to accomplish and how to go about doing it, not caring how many sacrifices they have to make if in the end it means saving more people. In the entire show, theres only one clueless wimpy guy, and he's not really a main, though still plays a major-ish role.
