Yeah, crazy is the word I'd use. Nice animation and voluptous character design. Hoping for the producers to NOT to use the whole childhood business so much. It's alright when used properly, but I don't any cliche's in a mecha basketball anime.

Whoo, what a blast, literally.

Dan certainly made that boring basketball game more interesting when he intervened. The last few minutes of this episode rocked, man, what a rush! Nice visual designs and animation in this anime, I may be putting this on my weekly watch list.

That was totally unexpected. I figured that this series would be a typical TV Tokyo-style kid's sports anime. This was more like Studio 4C doing a basketball remake of Gurren Lagann.

I definitely get that Studio 4°C vibe too; the backgrounds and stuff reminded me a lot of Tekkon Kinkreet, which is a good thing. This show looks like it might actually be really cool.

That was a little slow at the start, but totally unexpected. The last bit was fucking pro. Who woulda thought a show about giant robots playing basketball would have been awesome?

This is a quality entertainment.
By the way that scene that he splits up with Miyuki reminds of Love Hina :D

This first episode totally corresponded to my prediction, this show is so crazy that it's actually good. And what a great start this was! The animation is simply gorgeous, but that's expected when you have Satelight involved.
Looking forward to more :)

lol that was absoultely ridiculous, more so than I had even hoped. Definitely great energy throughout, really looking forward to seeing what they end up doing. There were more giant boobs than I expected, but I did find the innuendo scene a little funny and laughed at she's doing it in the wrong order. The giant rejection at the end was also awesome.

Should I watch Gurren Lagann after this is over? Could Gurren Lagann be in art form like this anime?

Gurren Lagaan has some great art, similar character archetypes, and the same over-the-top kind of feel. So yeah, if you like those aspects then go watch it.

This was a pretty awesome episode. It has that quirky taste to it with the random bits with the ducks and shit. Looking forward to the next episode but I did feel like the insert songs felt out of place. The ED fit pretty well though.

well, I just watched this episode.

man, the starting scenes showing the city reminded me a ton of TekkonKinkreet, and all the backgrounds looked like they were from Studio 4°C. Though the characters definitely were not. Not that i didn't like the character design. when they introduced the chick, and they went to her house (I laughed so hard when the dude was like "aren't they doing things in the wrong order?"), the setting there seemed straight out of Freedom. So the backgrounds are something like a mix of Freedom and TekkonKinkreet.

I was hoping that they'd do more parkour, what with the awesome urban setting. but in stead he just kind of scootered through town.

I was disappointed with how they treated the sister's injury.. they referred to it as like her losing her future? really? is that how paraplegics are viewed in Japan? yeah, she sits at home all day on the computer. but thats totally her choice.. I mean, just because she can't play basket ball because she got an injury, doesn't mean that she should be such a sour-puss all the time...

the basketball match was pretty sweet, and I loved the insert song. But I dunno where the series is going now? it seemed like they had everything taken care of. the conflict, the climax, and the resolution.. I think it would have made a good 1 shot OVA, because that's what it felt like at the end. though I am looking forward to the next episode.

over all, I enjoyed it. It was a bit more shounen-boy-yelling than I like, but the urban setting and basketball focus is just too awesome not to watch this.

Extremely Westernized show by Shin Itagaki (Black Cat) there, thanks to (or because of) Mr Romain, that already did Oban Star Racers. This first episode was not funny at all and all the characters without exception felt cliché. Nothing original at all here, they didn't even try to hide the influences, and except if you're looking for great colors, animation, and art overall (without the chara-design which is horrible for my tastes), you're in for a surprinsingly entertaining show. Still, I don't really like all these CGI, it more or less hurts my eyes any time they are caught by these flashy bits of polygons. I guess a lot of people will like this series since it has a fantastic budget and a great staff too but I hate both its genre (I hate sports/mecha mixes more than anything) and its overall atmosphere (flashy stuff with fanservice and a lot of CGI... I don't feel concerned at all).

The worst of it being that I love both the director (Black Cat is a masteriece of direction) and the scenarist (Tatsuo is one of my fav directors and scenarists alike) and I feel like I SHOULD love this anime but I just can't, it's too hard for me. When I saw this first epsiode, I understood it is typically the kind of series where marketing people and designers/animators took control of the production and there is not any control on the creativity of the staff, reducing both Itagaki and Sato to simple roles of bystanders (yes, Romain and Kawamori as original creators and head of the project must be hard...). Everything just bounces all over the place, the script is unstructured and expected, there's no coherence or consistence anywhere and it's just a series for the fun of it, it doesn't talk about anything and doesn't want to. The type of series I should love but that I hate to sum it up.

By the way, the fat Naruto made me laugh.

Looks more like Satelight doing IGPX coupled with Oban Star Racers and Naruto to me... I don't really see the experimental style of Studio 4°C or Gurren Lagann here, since Basquash is pretty much the antithesis of that, it's a huge marketing project aimed at international markets (half the staff is European or at least non-Japanese, one of my friends even works on it, and you just have to watch the characters and situations to understand it's everything but a niche anime).

Wow! As utterly stupid and clichéd this should have been, it turned out to be wtf exciting and awesome! The graphics (both the animation and the way they used it) are more than great, so as the music (I especially liked the ED) and even the story is pretty good compared to what I expected when I realized I'm watching a show about mechs playing basketball.

First I felt Eureka 7 vibes, but soon it turned into (please don't slap me) a total Gurren Lagann. Maybe it's just the juggling boobs.

For me, best first ep of the season. *Shocked*

I am quite looking forward to more, the BF reminded me of MegasXLR (what with the car being the head), the eye catches reminded me of TTGL, the whole thing was beautiful to look at, and I was certainly more intersted in the characters than the BFs.

I'm thinking I'm not the only one who thinks this might be this season's TTGL

Meh, I don't think you can really judge all of this in one episode, where all they were trying to do - imo - is introduce us to the characters, the world and the game of basquash (as played with big foots) and how different its perceived to be compared to normal basketball. That's it. How can you say it "doesn't talk about anything" in only 24 minutes? You are inferring WAAY too much from 24 minutes.

Of course, I'm both a huge bball and mecha fan, so maybe I'm a little biased on the concept of this series and have a more positive outlook on it than the average anime fan.

Regardless, I really enjoyed this episode. As people have already stated, art form is reminiscent of TTGL, but slight different to give it a different feel. The music in this episode was stellar, especially the insert song during the game.

Again, just one episode. Give it some time, I say.

Huge assumption your making, although I do agree that's the feeling they gave off. But really, if something you love is taken away from you, its to be expected you'll go through some kind of angst phase. Again, we don't know anything about the sister, the circumstances, or her pesonality, so I'm going to reserve judgment till then.

Loved the episode and definitely see potential.

Jesus that was an exhilarating episode. the presentation of Basquash is certainly top-notch; fluid animation, vibrant color palette, and a meticulously detailed city. It happens that premieres have outstanding animations then take a slow slide as the series goes on, but since this is Satelight we're talking about, I think this show is in good hands.

as for the lead character, he reminds me a lot of Basara from Macross 7 (this is a Kawamori project after all) so I'm kind of not sure what to think of him at the moment.
