I'm gonna watch this topic, I was interested in the same thing.

I know Fooly Cooly would be great while stoned, but I haven't tried drinking and watching anime in a while. Give FLCL a try regardless though and also try out Space Dandy.

EDIT: Black Lagoon is amazing both while drinking and sober, definitely give it a shot.

I could imagine watching Kaiba and Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei while drunk would be a pretty trippy experience.

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

There are plenty of bizarre anime series that probably should be viewed while intoxicated. I sometimes drink while watching anime, and when I do, certain ones seem to work better than others.

The following have already been mentioned, but I'll add a few words.

Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan - I wonder if the creators of this violent comedy were drunk or on drugs when they thought of it. An angel repeatedly kills and resurrects the kid she is living with. This is domestic violence taken to an absurd extreme. Some people are very offended by the mere existence of this anime, but anyone who can avoid taking it seriously might just be able to enjoy it. Alcohol will certainly help.

Excel Saga - Excel acts like she is either a hyperactive drunk or is on drugs all the time. Watching this series through an alcoholic haze would surely add to its enjoyment. If you watch this one, don't forget its spin-off, Puni Puni Poemii.

FLCL - This is what happens when a nice coming-of-age story is filtered through warped minds. If you aren't drunk when you watch it, you'll feel like you are drunk afterwards.

And here are a few that haven't been mentioned yet.

Mars of Destruction - This legendary horrible anime is best not taken seriously, and alcohol helps the viewer in this regard. After a few drinks, you will be more than capable of appreciating just how horrible it is. Pair it with Tenkuu Danzato Skelter Heaven, made by the same incompetent group, for a perfect evening of drunkenness.

Inferno Cop - Unlike the previous entry, this one is intentionally bad, and it shows a good degree of creativity on a minuscule budget. It has become a cult favorite. Drinking while watching Inferno Cop certainly would be a productive activity.

Nekojiru-sou (Cat Soup) - A hallucinogen might be more appropriate than alcohol for this short film, but alcohol should work just fine. It is a very creative and well made exploration of a surreal world, and one can certainly appreciate it sober, but having some alcohol in the system might help to bring a deeper understanding.

And to top off the evening... Shitcom - After you are already drunk, and you are considering whether or not to worship the porcelain god, give this one-minute claymation a quick view, and it will help you on your way to the bathroom.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

I'd imagine maybe Paprika (Satoshi Kon), Kuuchuu Buranko, and Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei because they're all kinda trippy to begin with

And maybe any of the really stylistic stuff by Shaft (EX: Monogatari series)

Direct me to the stoned thread, and then go watch FLCL drunk if you haven't; you may actually be able to make something of it then.

Alternatively I guarantee the Byston Well Monogotari dub would be the best drunk time you ever had.

Actually, before I thought about Byston Well dubbed I didn't realize getting drunk and watching anime was a thing but now that I have thought about it I'm inclined to go crack a bottle and turn it on.

Serial Experiments Lain is one I've watched drunk as well as Tenshi no Tamago (Angel's Egg). They both have very similar atmospheres in giving that hazy type of feeling. I like watching surreal and highly dream like stuff whilst intoxicated personally.

Personally those are two of my favorite titles but I wouldn't understand watching them drunk. Those are the type of anime that have deeper meanings than they portray to me and I need a clear mind in order to consume them.

If I were to watch an anime drunk it would be one of the two I suggested or some other series with underlying zany or comical value.

Well, I've seen Serial Experiments Lain several times now and I don't think it's personally as hard to understand as some people make it out to be. I also found a video review that does a good job of making more sense of it although it's open to various interpretations. It's by Brent Newhall (Otaku no Video). Also, being drunk of course effects people differently, personally when I'm drunk it evokes certain thought processes where I'll be even more in the mood to watch this type of anime. I won't understand it any less, but again as I said it depends on the person.

Well hell it's not like I ever tried it so I guess maybe I'll have to watch Lain drunk some day and then let you know how it affected my experience.
