March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. is under pressure from video-game publishers to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 console or risk seeing more development funds shift to Nintendo Co.’s Wii.

Sony, which has resisted calls for lower prices, is likely to shave $50 to $100 off the PS3 this month or next, said Mike Hickey, an analyst with Janco Partners Inc. in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Starting at $399.99, the PS3 is $200 more than the lowest-priced Xbox 360 from Microsoft Corp. and $150 more than the market-leading Wii.

Three years into the latest generation of game consoles, Sony is stuck in third place, data from the manufacturers show. The Tokyo-based company, once the dominant player, has half the worldwide users of Wii, even though the PS3 has earned praise for its processing power, graphics and Blu-ray movie player. U.S. sales of the PS3 have declined for three straight months.

Now here is the kicker..

I guess Sony still doesn't know that the economy is slipping and that people can't afford to pay that much money for a gaming console when there are cheaper modes of entertainment out there.

And publishers are bitching because? It may be in 3rd, but it still has over 21m units sold. It's already had 2 price drops and people still whine.

I plan on getting either a X360 or a PS3 in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2009, depending on the future announcements with relations to Final Fantasy Versus XIII and this other PS3-exclusive title that I can't seem to remember right now.

The reason why PS3 sales are low compared to any other console or portable gaming devices is the high cost of the product. At the start of the seventh generation sales, a PS3 costs almost double the prices of a Wii, while the overall number of games are nothing compared to the huge variety of Wii games. That definitely was a deciding factor as to why Sony was losing to their rivals in the game markets. Considering the the global economy is on the verge of collapsing, while the number of consumers spending money is on the decrease side, I believe that price cuts do promote more sales of any specific product, not just the PS3 but at the same time, by doing so will also reduce the estimated amount of profit to be earned. Thus, supporting the price cut or not depends on the position of which an individual stands.

As a consumer, I obviously support price cuts. However, the high executives of Sony definitely aren't very happy when game publishers pressure them to cut the overall pricing of the PS3 due to sluggish sales of their games which is caused by the obvious fact that most people don't own a PS3 console and thus, they are unable to purchase or play any PS3 game. In other words, by reducing the cost of the PS3, it will benefit both the consumers and the game publishers, yet at the same time reduces the profit of Sony. Generally, it benefits the majority.

That's not a "kicker". Sony has done this with the PS2, but the difference from then was still huge. $300 per console(and some price drops after) back when the PS2 came out kept Sony in the negative for years; they were living off of their games until they actually started making profit from their console. But there was a BIG difference from back then and now. Sony came out with their system first, promised exclusives and actually delivered on their promise and when the flow of games began to pour in it damn near flooded us with exclusives... only now has the flow of PS2 games begun to slow down.

PS3 on the other hand gave the 360 a one year head start which built up their fan base, didn't deliver what they promised to their fans and thus their flow of games hasn't even begun to flow as well as the other systems in terms of exclusives.

The thing that Sony needs to learn is that the consumers are what makes the company. Nintendo is backed by a horde of loyal fans, why? Because they respect their fans. If anyone has actually kept up with the PS3 and Sony, they'd know their true face. Sony doesn't know what their doing and don't give a damn about what the fans want until it affects their sales. They react to the sales not the fans. If I remember correctly, they originally wanted to make the PS3 a "high-end" entertainment system with a price deserving of that system. What the fuck? Sony should know that the majority of their consumers are aren't high class, yet they still price their system high thinking that they can just have the fans pay however much money for whatever they make. They also used the entire system to promote a new CD format that ended up tacking on some-odd hundred dollars onto the system. The fuck? And the price drops that they HAVE made have all been because they've been slowly breaking their promises. No more backward compatibility and fewer hardware options? It's not really a price drop if they aren't selling the same product. "Hey there! I'm selling you this computer at a lower price but I'm taking out this and this and this."

I agree with you fully on that /rant. Its not the same system that Sony promised.
Its like the *Fable* of game consoles. They promised a lot and then didn't deliver. >.>
Doesn't mean I don't like the console.
I want them to show off. It would give me a reason to buy the system. :)

The ps3 feels lacking to me. There are games that interest me but it doesn't seem to motivate me to get the system.
The PS2 was the same until like 2 years after its release IMO, so anything can turn around. The Wii sure did, and it is getting some interesting stuff.

If the PS3 drops 100 euro (dollars, whatever) then I'm pretty sure I would buy one, if only for Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 and the Bluray. There's no way in hell I would sell my Xbox360 tho... ^_^

I still don't think they could do it, but you never know. I would have got an original xbox if they released a slim, lol.

Odd too, that they released a smaller controller but not a lighter console for it.

If it means a cheaper price, I wouldn't mind a different PS3 model.
