I'm borrowing a friend's Yugioh DVDs since I can't find subs for download, purchase, etc. These are HK rips and I forgot how laughably horrible these were.

So I'm calling out to everyone to think back to the worst HK ripped subs you ever saw, or the worst subs you've seen in fansubs or even professional subs.

For me, it's a tie between YGO and One Piece. Although, thinking back, the Inuyasha HK rips had their moments. I think my favorite was the translation of Sesshomaru's name to "The Killing Pill."

Why would they mean dubs? They mean subs.

I have this Gakuen Heaven with HK subs that are pretty bad. They're a combination of poor grammar and too straightforward translations. Also, someone needs to find the screencap of the One Piece sub where Usopp is going WE'LL NEVER BREAK THROUGH THE HYMEN LIKE THIS or something xD

The worst I ever watched were of Eyeshield 21.

I have no idea of who subbed that episode, but they were kind enough to translate an enumeration as "I don't want to translate this and you don't want to know" How kind.

When talking about bad subs, one must mention "mass naked child events". I don't know any specific series or sub group, but I think this mistranslation happened more than once.

The first anime I bought was a Chinese pirated (didn't know, thought it was legit) version of Chobits since I bought it in the US, and not in China. Good god the subs were pretty bad at times, but they were pretty funny.

I watched the first episode of Baccano! about a year ago and the subs made absolutely no sense whatsoever. They even made me drop the series. What good is continuing a series you have no interest in? Thanks, really bad subs!</sarcasm>

It's a good thing the series is coming out on DVD so I can start over again.

It's from "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex". That line of dialogue is pretty infamous.

I guess the worst are those subbed by an unknown group.

For the widely known group, I would say Your-Mom. I waited for Nuke to release all School Rumble before burning it into a DVD disc. Now, it's Seto no Hanayome's turn.

Me and my friends watched a downloaded copy of the first Death Note Live Action Movie and the subs were horrible. But it did make it one of the funniest movies i have ever seen, i beilive the subber used google translator and the the best lines was in a dramatic bit and Light said: "Why you shot Shidori?" and we just ended up laughing our asses off.

Kyuuketsuki Miyu (TV) dvd subs were pretty ridiculous. I lol'ed every time Miyu said "yami e!" and they would put "to the darkness with thee!" XDDD what's with the fancy language for such a simple line, it was so out of place XD

and every time they translate -chan into dear it just cracks me up XD like in Skip Beat (HorribleSubs indeed) Ren's line was translated into "Kyoko dear"; i was like "what is he, her mother?" XDDD

Outlaw Star by a group which name i don't remember.
one of the stupidest translation mistakes. the line was: "You have to climb on X mountain". but they translated it like: "You have to climb on Mr. X". so poor Jin ended as a gay.
PS anyway, all ansub is nothing to compare with russian one. sometimes they create something that you can't even hope to understand.

Anybody ever seen the subs for The Rapeman? Those are pretty laughable. I dunno if they meant for it to be that bad or if it was accidental, but in any case I'm pretty sure your average japanese person doesn't call people "Niggaz."

...and this. Luckily, I had a better fansubbed version that I'd bought at a con (pre-US release).

Bought a strawberry panic DVD off of ioffer.com. I was like sweet only 15 dollars including shipping. It's too good to be true!

Well, it was lol. The dvd was fine, quality was okay, and the packaging, but the SUBS were total shit. Like sometimes just flashing up for a second and disappearing, and the names of all the characters were in chinese no matter what. It came with english and chinese subs, if you pick english the names are in chinese still. I absolutely can't tolerate that PLUS the general shittyness of the subtitles. Yeah... at least it was only 15 dollars.

Fansubs are good enough for me, I guess the next anime I buy i'll be reading reviews and what not for subtitles that don't suck.

Are you using some kind of advanced logic I don't know about? Have you decided to assign new meanings to English words? Are you just intentionally burning a straw man and knowing full well that you're changing the subject and misrepresenting a claim?

I couldn't wait for the official release and bought a bootleg copy of Yami no Matsuei. I ended up with subs that ran off the screen, advertisement URL's plastered in the middle of whole sentences, and random symbols or kanji thrown into the character's names.

And this:

Unfortunately, it wasn't so funny for me since I was watching it alone, and I gave up after fifteen or so minutes and haven't bothered to watch the movie at all since.

Wow this topic brought back a random memory. It was years ago and I can't remember the title of the anime, but everything was translated horribly. The one line I do remember was something about the present time being translated as "It's pretzel time!"

At least the subs gave us a running inside joke for a year or so.

Worst sub I've seen can hardly even qualify as a sub. They had just copied the English dub and added the text to the Japanese audio so just about everything was off.

The version of the Escaflowne movie I saw managed to misspell everyone's name except Dilandau, invluding making Van Ban and Folken Florken. Oh, and at the start when the guy who Hitmoi likes tells her he's going away, he tells her he's going to Sportsland.

The subs for Tokyo Babylon were the same. Worst part is that the dub added dialogue to some parts that were silent or had only music in the original, so in some scenes you'd hear nothing but see random text, and I kept thinking that the audio was faulty until I realized where the problem was.
And I think it was Tokyo Babylon that translated the suffixes too... kun would become "young", as in Subaru-kun ---> young Subaru. Which would have been a real laugh if used in a school comedy anime, because you'd have a whole classroom of people calling each other "young X" and "Y dear", sounding like 80-years-old.

Also while watching Code Geass R2 I didn't want to wait for decent subs (that, and the show wasn't interesting enough for me to look for decent subs) so I watched it in streaming. The subs I found were that horrible huge shit where three lines of text take up most of the screen. But that was my fault for going with the crap subs. I'm not even going to name the group, but you can guess ;)

I bought the HK set of Zeta Gundam years ago (WAY before the US release). It started out okay, but rapidly degenerated as the series went on. I eventually just gave up. Some of the funnier lines I remember were along the lines of "Prepare yourself for economy!" (Prepare to die) and "Attract the enemy boat!" (Attack the enemy ship). The names also started becoming random Chinese characters and sometimes there were no subs for minutes at a time.

And wasn't the HK Inuyasha the one with the line "You death pie!"
XD That kills me.

You should watch TV-Nihon's subs of Zeta Gundam: A New Translation. I guarantee that it'll be worse.
